Day 21: "help them"
EvS mostly; 200 wds
"Please ..."
Bigglesworth folded up, collapsing, and Erich had to drop his own gun and catch him in an unthinking, instinctive move. Bigglesworth was still clutching at Erich's sleeve, trying to talk.
Begging might have been expected, finding himself in his enemy's custody. But begging had never been Bigglesworth's style, and there was an intensity to his efforts that somehow pushed him through the lingering effects of the gas he had been exposed to.
"You should not speak," Erich said, lowering him to the ground. "Lie still, we shall certainly --"
"Algy --" Bigglesworth coughed, and drew in a fierce breath. "Algy and Ginger -- they're still in there. Please --"
With that, even his tenacious grip on consciousness was lost. He went limp, a little blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
Erich carefully lowered his head to the ground, listened to his breathing - rasping but steady - and touched his throat to feel the pulse there. Then he turned and looked at the gaping door to the old bunker, and felt his jaws grind. He owed them nothing at all. To let Bigglesworth's companions die in a decade-old trap would be exactly what they deserved.
So he could not explain why he wetted his scarf from his flask, wrapped it around his mouth, and plunged grimly inside.
And don't miss
philomytha's wonderful follow-up to this ficlet!
