Tiny Biggles adventures in the snow and puddles
I am adult, behold my adulting.
Okay, so, to set the scene, I sometimes use toys and other handy objects to block out action scenes. A while back, I bought a box of assorted 80s-era Playmobil people and horses from eBay for this, because first of all I have a lot of nostalgia for them (my sister and I had a bunch of these and played with them a lot, although these of course are not the exact same ones) but also, they come in a variety of colors and are a very good size for this sort of scene blocking, as opposed to grabbing stray figures off my desk and "the part of the hero is currently played by this unicorn."
........ anyway it was probably inevitable that I would look into this box today and start wondering if it was possible to cast them as Biggles characters.
The 1980s Playmobil figures come in only one face and body style, in a few different colors, with black, brown, or blond as a hair option. I should probably have cast a blond one as Biggles, but honestly I ended up going with one of the brown-haired ones because "he just looks like a Biggles."
The team. Left to right: Algy, Biggles (in back), Ginger, and Bertie.
(I realize Bertie is also a blond in canon, but again, "he just looked like a Bertie," and also, I can't have them ALL blond. Ginger has to have a red shirt because their hair just doesn't come in red.)
I don't know why I decided to use one with a cowboy hat for von Stalhein. I just did.
But he definitely needed a sword. I can't believe Johns never gave him a sword in canon.
Further adventures in the snow. I guess they're stranded on a mountain or something.
The box includes some accessories such as a canoe, which it turns out doesn't actually float - the only way I could actually get a picture with them in the canoe was when I balanced it on something under the water.
I mean, it floats when it's empty, but you put a couple of guys in there (Bertie and Algy, in this case) and it capsizes immediately. This is probably accurate to some of their adventures in canon, now that I think about it.
Von Stalhein, what have you done.
Ginger goes to rescue them. It goes badly.
(One thing we used to make great use of, when we were kids, is that these guys do float, but because the greatest air space in their entire body is their hollow heads, they float head-up just below the surface of the water. This is amusing to a 7-year-old but also pretty good for h/c scenes.)

I guess he's captured? Although Biggles's horse's head won't stay up (this is what happens when you're playing with 40-year-old toys off eBay) so it's trying to drown itself. Or maybe it just wanted a drink.
"I've got you now, Bigglesworth!" Also, the horse's head managed to stay up for the 0.5 seconds it took to take this picture.
Then again maybe it's necessary to work together, as uneasy allies, to get out of this situation. But how long can this alliance last? (Stay tuned.)

All those horse rides. He even *has* swords....I mean technically Johns gave him A LOT of swords (Biggles & Co) which Biggles then promptly collapsed when he went hiding in that room in complete darkness XD
So we know Erich has swords XD

I love that they're both so into all the military stuff. They would definitely go on dates to military history museums after EvS gets to London.

(I love how he's prancing between Biggles and his biplane there. I realize in canon they don't know each other yet, but his body language in the illustration is 100% "Have you noticed how dashing I am yet?")

I am telling myself that it is not sensible to spend £££ on a complete set of the magazines with the original Flies East serial in them even if they are illustrated. I've found a lot of the illustrations online, but I don't think all of them...

I love EvS with cavalry sabre, and Biggles’s horse clearly is trying to buck him off, much to Erich’s amusement, and oops, shouldn’t have tried to bank the canoe!

I am DELIGHTED that Lego Biggles nearly happened, and also to learn of the Lego dinosaur inspiration. (Not gonna lie, part of the reason why I did this was in the hopes that it would inspire me to write the Flies East AU I've been vaguely contemplating that involves the two of them stranded in the desert, based loosely on the variant cover in my icon.)
EvS is one of those characters who simply deserves a nice sword.

Biggles's horse objects to being treated like an airplane! EvS manages not to fall off laughing, just about.
Given Prussian duelling culture pre-WW1, the odds are the EvS knows exactly how to fight with a sword.

Flies East AU? *pricks up ears* Anything that involves Biggles, EvS perhaps in one of his disguises, horses and deserts sounds like a truly excellent idea.
Right?? I struggled a bit with when to set it, because what I really want is Biggles ending up in EvS's custody during the time period when he's captured by the Bedouins, but this is before the various events in which EvS starts to see him as more heroic and resourceful than the "traitor Brunow" (like rescuing Mayer and saving the squadron during the fake aerodrome trap), so I wanted to get some of those feels in as well ... I was thinking about having Biggles captured when he shows up at the oasis with Mayer, and being press-ganged along on EvS's desert assault on the British lines.

Someone on the Biggles forum was doing an excellent fic illustrated with screencaps from The Sims, but it hasn't been updated for a while.
