This has nothing to do with the story, but on reading the summary I thought idly that I have never actually seen a deer caught in headlights and I wondered if you had?

I have not! Well, I mean, I've seen animals at night, but never that exact thing.

From what I understand it's a real thing, more or less -- animals do have a tendency to freeze at night when a light shines in their eyes -- but probably not a thing that happens all that often, because I've driven at night quite a bit but haven't ever seen it.
