SGA: 4x17- Midway

Hey, it's aired in some parts of the country, right? So I can post a reaction post now. (Yes, I did get the early iTunes version...)

My thoughtful and well-considered reaction to this episode goes something like this:

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

*flail*
*flail*
*flail*

*pant pant pant*

Maybe I'm just really easy for this show lately, or something. But, Carl Binder, how much do I love you. Let me count the ways:

- TEAL'C. RONON. TEAAAAAAAL'C. Okay, in this case, I'd seen some spoiler photos and clips of Chris and Jason fighting, so I kinda knew it was coming and was alraedy DYING to see "Midway" because I knew that would be the Teal'c episode and that he'd get some interaction with Ronon. But ... wow! I'm not sure if I can discuss this part rationally because I'm getting all fangirly again just thinking about it, and it was most of the episode! Chris Judge's hair, and Teal'c and Sam, and the Atlantis gymnasium turning into a pit fighting match while their military commander places bets on it (these must be the sort of times when Sam finds herself thinking "Why did I take this job again?"), and Teal'c and Ronon watching Earth TV together (!!!!), and Teal'c getting fed on by a Wraith ... and ... *flails some more*

- Presumed-dead-John, and worried Rodney calling him John, never gets old, is all I'm sayin'. I can see it a hundred times in a hundred different variations, and it's still good. :D Oh, and poor John! Trapped in a puddlejumper for two weeks with McKay, Bill Lee and KAVANAGH! It's a wonder he's still sane! (Also, Ronon's mischievous look when he's waking him up absolutely slays me dead with hilarity and squee.)

The other stuff really pales in comparison, but I have GOT to throw in a bucketload of writer-love for Teyla dealing with xenophobia, sexism and pregnancy-related prejudice all in one swoop! I think what made me squee is the actual recognition by the show that such things happen ... which is the point at which I can only decide that I must be really easy for this show, and, also, they had to do it through a fairly unlikable third-party character, but I'm just thrilled that they acknowledged it.

While not nearly as much of a squee! moment as seeing Bates two weeks ago, it was a neat bit of continuity to see Kavanagh again, and kind of tragically hilarious that they've taken to using him on the show exactly as he's used in fic (as the resident fuck-up physicist). And, hey, he's got a first name -- Peter! (You can read it on his uniform tag.)

I was really amazed and impressed at how calm Bill Lee was, considering that he was dealing with a Wraith about to kill him and had just seen a colleague fed on, too! I thought that Kavanagh was going to die. Thought they'd killed Walter, too, for a minute there when the stun-bomb went off.

Did anyone else notice that there were at least two different kinds of currency being passed around in the fight bets? I thought that was a neat touch, and the betting in general (along with Sheppard's complicity in it) was a fun glimpse of Atlantis on down-time. I love thinking of the Pegasus Galaxy as a frontier, and Atlantis as its own little society with its own rules. I love little moments when the show gives us the idea that it really might be this way.

On a serious(ish) note, they've lost the Midway station now, and after the almost-invasion I really can't see the SGC letting them build another one. I'm kinda glad, actually, although for a little while there it was kind of nice that you could do episodes like "Outcast" or "Miller's Crossing" without having to deal with how they got from Pegasus to Earth.

And I'm curious if "Todd" really betrayed them or if he was fed on and/or tortured into revealing information.

OMG. I haven't read your post, I'm still watching!! But you wrote *flail* and I'm like whoa right now, so this is good! Teal'c! With hair! Eee. okay, commercial break is over. Thirty minutes to go!

I was expecting to enjoy this episode but I never thought I'd LOVE it. There are too many tidbits to mention but John acting like the dad when Ronon's pointing the gun at Teal'c....my husband even wondered how many times John has had to come and tell Ronon to take a time out.

Loved Carter's referring to the military aspects of being a little low key at Atlantis, forgot her exact words.

Yes, to Teyla recognizing the sexism of the IOA and her little worried glance at John about re-joining the Team.....something tells me to Teyla..thats not written in stone.

The bets! Chuck the bookie and John taking his share despite the draw.

The Alpha males! The fight..the bonding in killing!

Having Rodney and John on wanted posters from the Genii is nothing compared to every Wraith knowing them on sight!

Loved, love, loved solider!Sheppard. Did he kill what...15 Wraith? Love seeing that side of him..sometimes I think it gets overlooked when Ronon's in a battle.

The two sided war so to speak...was fun and tense.

I could go on, but the end was made of pure WIN! Rodney calling him John..again..always under stress. Sheppard risking death to save them..though he must have been at death's door by the time he did get in that suit! Was he unconscious when the geek squad arrived..he didn't notice them for while.

The very, very end! Ronon's affectionate way of waking up Sheppard!! Sheppard asleep with the headphones?

Nothing but love for this.

You want to write a tag right??? You know the jumper missing time?

Oh, there's SO much tag potential for this, although the tag idea that *really* gets me is SG-1 coming back (or waking up) and finding dead Wraith all over the place and Teal'c covered with blood and they're all, "WTF? We missed something?"

I was really looking forward to the episode just knowing that it was going to spotlight Ronon and Teal'c, but it was better than anything I'd hoped for.

[identity profile] trystings.livejournal.com 2008-02-16 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm squeeeeeeing with you. Squee Squee Squee.

I loved it. Loved it! Carter's understatement of the year "Atlantis is a bit lax on military protocol" had me kicking with delight. It's exactly why I like SGA so much better than SG-1. She must not have known what hit her when she took command of Atlantis; the sloppy salutes, the lollipops, and now betting on fights. Eeeeee!

And Midway blown up, so they're semi-cut off again, which sucks when they have to get back real quick for funerals and abductions, but still, the frontier vibe is back!

And Kavanagh, what the heck happened to his hair?? Didn't he have a blond ponytail? And he's still an ass. Yay! Don't tell me the writer's don't read fanfic!

And McKay angst, ummm, yummi. He does anguish so well.

Loved it!

I'm supposed to be writing my fic-athon story..set time aside for it tonight..and I can't because I'm all about the happy and fun...and thats sooo not the mood I need for this story!!

That's exactly it for me, too. I like SG-1, certainly; I fanned pretty heavily on the early seasons, and it has its own distinct appeal for me (the ruins and Egyptology, in particular). But I'm a huge, head-over-heels sucker for frontier societies and space westerns. I think that if Firefly had run long enough for the character relationships to really gel, it would have earned the same deep fan-love that I have for SGA, because I adored the setting but didn't quite have enough time to fall deeply for the characters.

It took me awhile to be sure that it was *really* Kavanagh, because he does look different without that ponytail!

*laughs* Oops! Yeah, I've been on a cheerful high all week from this episode. It was just about perfect. (Though my sister did point out one continuity oopsie -- they should have used the Atlantis gate to dial the Earth gate directly, as soon as they realized the Midway station was compromised, and warn them to close the iris! But I didn't think of it either.)

YES YES YES YES OMG YES! If you're easy, LET ME JOIN THE CLUB!

I'm all caps an hearts right now, and OH, SHOW. ♥♥♥

It made me do pictures. XD (Um. 75~ screencaps, maybe...? I sort of lost count and I had to stop myself from taking more, because John did look incredibly fine doing the commando thing on Midway, and Ronon and Teal'c fighting, and and and OH show! ♥)

I didn't notice the "Peter", but I DID notice the different currencies, and it made me go OOOOH and love on them a little. As did the deck of cards & music player they've got cached away on the jumper, and the fact that Todd wasn't there playing the betrayer, so who knows how those other Wraith got that info, and and - everything else you said, too. ^___^

Hee! I was actually reading this when you posted yours! (Hey, this time I get to join in the squee in real-time, as opposed to waiting until the episode downloads, which usually takes overnight!)

I think it's hilarious (but not too surprising) that our squee basically mirrors each other, except yours is much longer. And ILLUSTRATED! I adored your screencaps ... I need to go comment over there.

I really, really, really love this show right now. Oh, and I hadn't even *thought* about the cards and the music player obviously being part of the equipment on the jumper, which it would have to have been. That's a whole new squee right there!

(Yay that I'm not the only one who noticed the different sorts of currency! *Such* a nice touch!)

I was really looking forward to this episode, and even so, I loved it more than I was expecting. I think this one's tied with Doppelganger for my favorite of the season.

This episode got me SO VERY energized, I simply couldn't resist - there was so much cute, and so many nifty things (like Ronon and Teal'c's developing friendship), and such cool action and heartwrenching worry...!

(Hey, this time I get to join in the squee in real-time, as opposed to waiting until the episode downloads, which usually takes overnight!)

Absolutely! (And I know what you mean. Especially when I'm in Sweden, when I'm in such a wrong timezone that I need to go to work and such just as the episode becomes available for download. It's been great fun being here - I'd had to stay up really late, but it's still much, much better than going a whole day knowing the episode might be available, but being unable to do anything about it...! Obviously, iTunes needs to screw up more often. XD)

I think it's hilarious (but not too surprising) that our squee basically mirrors each other, except yours is much longer.

I laughed when I read your post, because - yeah, I'm not kidding about the MASSIVE YES I replied with. ^____^ Though you took the time to point out that the show was acknowledging sexism and such, which I felt was very perceptive! Interesting, how they chose to do that.

I adored your screencaps ... I need to go comment over there.

Yay! And thank you! It's very gratifying to hear that you enjoy them so much. ♥

I really, really, really love this show right now.

I want to do the internet thing of offering it marriage and babies! Despite the fact that it's just a show. But. You know - I'd totally have its babies. XD In lieu of babies, I might just have to make more fic...!

Oh, and I hadn't even *thought* about the cards and the music player obviously being part of the equipment on the jumper, which it would have to have been. That's a whole new squee right there!

That was my first thought - hope you don't mind me including a link to The Killing Frost in my review. It always tickles me when the show does something that confirms a fanon speculation!

(Yay that I'm not the only one who noticed the different sorts of currency! *Such* a nice touch!)

It helped that some of the money was familiar! Though I admit that I don't really have a clue what that blue money is.

And now I really, really need to sleep, but - HOW? I'm still BOUNCING, between the yawns...!

Hee! We're cross-posting like crazy here! But no, of course I don't mind the link to "Killing Frost"; I was very flattered! And I'm actually very glad you pointed it out, because I hadn't even *thought* (until you said something) that the cards and such would have been in the jumper already, which makes it all the more plausible that they keep cocoa and such under the seat ...!

I want to do the internet thing of offering it marriage and babies! Despite the fact that it's just a show. But. You know - I'd totally have its babies. XD In lieu of babies, I might just have to make more fic...!

LOL! Well, that kind of *is* having its babies in a way, right? Seriously, I feel just a little too weird about it to say "... I want to have [xxx]'s babies!" because, uh, I don't really mean it! But I know exactly what you mean. How can this show be so awesome? And *keep* being awesome? In reference to your other post, I agree totally about Rodney's little "John!" being basically equivalent to a full-on hug from anybody else. I once joked to my sister awhile back that this show cranked my waff-o-meter (waff="warm and fuzzy feeling") up to infinity, where something like John hitting Rodney in the head causes the meter to red-line! A hug would undoubtedly result in spontaneous fangirl combustion. (Although, honestly, I've said in the past that I don't really *want* to see them hug, and with the cautionary example of SPN lurking right around the corner, I'm even more positive that it wouldn't be a good thing for the show. At least not unless the show can come up with a really sound scenario in which it makes sense for the characters! But you know ... they might.)

And the little acknowledgment of Teyla encountering sexism and prejudice among Earth humans ... okay, to some extent, it's awfully tokenistic and awfully convenient, the way they chose to do that. Especially since it was basically just a plot device to make the new IOA guy unsympathetic. But you know, I just don't *care*! Because they actually went there, and even if they could have done better, I'm delighted that they went there at all.

[identity profile] seperis.livejournal.com 2008-02-16 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
I love this show.

And oh my God Teal'c. His arms. The fight. I mean--I am not sure what else happened? There was Teal'c and his arms and John and his shooting and I just--um.

You're telling me something else happened? Really?

I think that was the Wraith who betrayed Todd (the one in the ep with the queen), so I'm guessing Todd didn't give him the info willingly. He said he was able to "procure" the info from Todd, which also makes it sound like it wasn't given willingly.

but still, the frontier vibe is back!

Yes! The bridge was a neat idea, but too convenient in the long run. I like seeing them a bit more cut off. And I don't see them rebuilding the station, after they've seen how easy it's to hack into the system (really, they should've anticipated that happening).

Great ep, eh? :) Teal'c and Ronon staring at each other in a manly fashon never gets old.

And I'm curious if "Todd" really betrayed them or if he was fed on and/or tortured into revealing information.

I was wondering, too. I have an irrational, squishy love for that character, I want to know what happened there. I hope we'll find out... they've been pretty good with continuity this season.

:D Oh, and poor John! Trapped in a puddlejumper for two weeks with McKay, Bill Lee and KAVANAGH!

Oh man, someone must write that fic!

In a nutshell: TEAL'C!!! RONON VS TEAL'C! Bill Lee being cool! Kavanagh screwing up just to prove how brilliant and responsible our Dr. McKay is! RONON FLICKING JOHN AWAKE!

This ep was JOY JOY JOY, you have covered all points, pretty much (except how we've watched the bits with Rodney saying 'John' about ten million times THEY DID PRESUMED DEAD!!! Even if only a few seconds of it wheeeee!!!)

Kavanagh stole Grodin's first name?! I missed that!

& John was taking yen. (...I didn't register it as 'foreign' currency at first, because I am so used to 1,000 yen bills, they look more normal to me than US dollars. Then I went waaaait a minute. ^^)

I flailed for a ridiculously long period of time in my own journal, but I don't seem to be able to stop! The writing of this was just so tight - funny, scary, tense and sweet, hitting every character note spot on.

Like you, I thought the parts where Rodney thought John was dead were just wonderful, but I also loved the way he pulled himself together and got on with the job. It was more than his brave little toaster turn from last week, much more 'okay, so now I have to do Sheppard's job'. I love how we tend to think of him as slightly daft and amateur next to his team, then you put him with other scientists, and suddenly you see how good he is.

I thought Kavanagh fainting was such a great echo of 'Critical Mass'. I hadn't recognised him up to that point... And it has seemed this season that the writers are more aware of fanfic. Or maybe the fanfic writers are just prescient. But we've had so many themes/tropes that come up in fic - and I'm loving every minute.

Between this and Torchwood this week, I'm pretty much in fangirl heaven. Certainly if I don't stop soon, I'm going to die of squee :D

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-16 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I can sorta answer about Todd - don't watch promo videos at MGM/SCiFi if you want to be spoiler free.

But, yes, it was a fun episode. And I'm overjoyed the Midway station is toast. Yes, that means less contact with Earth! :):) It was just too easy to toodle on back to earth for a burger and fries.

Peter? Good catch. I missed that but then I was too busy on the PC and watching sick doggie and the show.

[identity profile] anniehow.livejournal.com 2008-02-16 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Different currencies FTW!!! I recognized euros and I totally flipped like a flipping fangirl:D (plus it seemes that John bet on the draw and won. He knows his stuff, eh?)

I was unspoiled for the ep, so when Teal'c showed up I made dolphin noises :)

I can't watch this episode without remembering the Comic-Con panel last year. Mallozzi let slip that something bad was gonna happen to the Midway Station and David looks at him and goes "wait, I haven't gotten that script yet."
