The Dalemark Quartet
My Diana Wynne Jones re-read has now taken me through the Dalemark series (♥NAVIS♥). I vaguely remember from when I marathoned all her books the first time that the Dalemark books were among my less-favorites, but now I can't figure out why on earth, because fake-history and history-becoming-myth are among the tropes I really love. (Also. Navis. I had completely forgotten everything about the series, including the characters, but Navis basically had me at hello, because sarcastic hyper-competent characters with a secretly hidden soft side are my character kryptonite. Well, one of my varieties of character kryptonite, anyway.)
The only book in the series I didn't manage to read this time around is Cart and Cwidder, and I'm not entirely sure if I've EVER read it, because the library doesn't have it and it doesn't seem to be among the Dalemark books I borrowed from
senri ... WHICH I STILL HAVE, because I SUCK. I'm, uh, keeping them safe for you,
senri. If you ever want them back, just say.
Anyway, I ended up writing a thing, which is set after the next-to-last part of the last book and is therefore heavily spoilery.
Stop All the Clocks (3800 wds, gen)
No one who knew him was surprised that the Duke of Kernsburgh, on his deathbed, set about industriously organizing his own death. (There's no actual death in this story, but the potential deaths of various characters are talked about a lot.)

I might like those books back eventually :') now I kind of want to reread too! I'm still in Chile, though, so... they can stay safe with you a while longer.

(Though I did forget when I was typing the above post that you're not Senri anymore!)
You can reclaim them at any time, and in the meantime, they'll live here safely. :D
