I didn't know that about the one-shot, but I guess it would have to be -- either that, or out of continuity entirely, and they seem to be trying to avoid that.

... and not that I can't understand the desire to shoehorn Bucky in wherever possible, but that doesn't even make SENSE!

Myself, my secret hope is for a Bucky flashback scene in Ultron. That may just be my desire for all dress uniforms, all the time, though.

I want Maria too! At least a glimpse of who she might be! :D I think that's the main thing from later MCU canon that I would like to see a callback to in the movie.

There is quite a bit of canonical time travel in the comics.

Well sure, but it just doesn't fit! I mean, yeah, we know that decades later Howard is murdered and Peggy is senile, but none of that is even a glimmer at this period in their history, and bringing it into this canon would just make everything massively depressing and feel out of place with the overall 1940s-spy-shenanigans and origin-story thing they're clearly going for with the series. It's not that it would be impossible to include Howard's murder in some fashion, through a flash-forward or something, but ... I dunno, I just feel like the series would have to be something wholly different in order for this to work. Maybe that's just me.

Not just you. The comics and the movies are very different in their fundamental suspension-of-disbelief assumptions and aesthetic shape.

Yeah, now that I've fallen back into the comics, it's kind of fascinating to me how very different the movies and the comics are. I think it's actually more noticeable on the CA side of the franchise than the others, because CA overall feels more ... grounded, I guess, compared to the other main branches of the franchise. More real-worldish, and therefore even more of a departure from the comics than the rest of it is.

Did you ever read Avengers/Invaders (with it's terrible art, and the plot that was like six issues longer than it should have been)? I'm really selling it, aren't I, but it had some really nice Golden Age!Steve meets Bucky!Cap moments.

And yeah, I did read that! :D I agree about both points (the plot overall was so incoherent that I don't think I ever did figure out most of what was going on, other than "time travel") but it had some really wonderful Bucky stuff in it. :D

You should have tried it in real time. Every month another issue would come out, with it's increasingly terrible art, and you'd just keep reading it, feeling that surely this month something would happen, something would make sense, or it would end. It never did.

oh dear lord. XD Yeah, I bought the trade used (it's long out of print, surprise surprise) and while I desperately wish it had been better, there were parts of it that made up for the suckiness of the rest of it -- Bucky is such a sweetheart in this (both versions of him!), trying so hard to fix things.

But what do you mean??? EVERYBODY knows the entire 20th century took place in a single decade!!!11!!1!!

(For real though, while it would be fun if Bucky made a brief appearance, this is not his show, and I hope he only shows up as the cliffhanger of the season finale so that Peggy has a series-long arc hunting for the mysterious sniper who pops up at the worst possible times as she continues to kick ass week to week.)

And I really need to get myself some Peggy icons.

Right! I would love to see a Bucky cameo, but given the timeline, the show would have to be tied into knots to make it fit. I don't think he would've even been active as a sniper at this point, at least if they're doing anything close to the comics timeline, which admittedly is not automatic. Although "Peggy hunts the Winter Soldier" is something I would absolutely LOVE to see! But I'd rather not have the show be warped to shoehorn in a cameo from a character from a different part of the franchise, much as I love him.
