Steam is having a holiday game sale, so I treated myself to Sunless Sea, and started playing it tonight.
So how is it going,
sholio, you ask?
HAHAHAHAHA *cries*
Let me put it this way: I've stopped naming my captains and picking out backstories for them, because it's like naming feeder mice.
My biggest problem thus far is that my weapons don't seem to do anything to sea monsters. What are you supposed to DO once a sea monster gets after you? Because it seems like all I can do at that point is get attacked until I sink.
I was delighted with myself for figuring out how to dock on Hunter's Keep, after helplessly running into a number of smaller islands because I couldn't figure out that you need, y'know, docks.
But then I set sail and a sea monster ate me, so it was back to square one.

At least it's not just me.

And yeah, part of the problem is that I can never avoid monsters properly because I'm terrible at maneuvering. I'm using the arrow keys to move, and while I figured out pretty quickly that the key functions are always the same relative to your ship (that is, right arrow turns the rudder one way, left turns it the other way) this still means that the effective directions of the controls flip when the ship is pointing up vs. when it's pointing down -- as opposed to the left arrow always making you go in a leftward direction on the screen -- and I have a TERRIBLE time when I'm trying to remember this while I'm in the heat of battle. ("Left, left!" I find myself screaming inwardly. "No, my OTHER left!")
I also wonder if it isn't still pretty buggy, or if the Mac version is buggier, because there have been quite a few times that I haven't been able to do something I really ought to be able to do. In battle, I can rarely attack, not just because it's charging up whatever it has to charge up (loading the cannons or whatnot) but it'll have a red bar through it. And I think I've only gotten the repairs-to-ship button to do anything once, even when my hull integrity is high enough that it really ought to work. So I'm not entirely sure if I'd be doing better if everything worked correctly.
I did survive long enough on one voyage for my crew to resort to cannibalism, so that was entertaining.
