sholio: Sebastian Stan as Bucky (Winter Soldier Bucky)

More Captain America comics talk

I am finally done with reading (most of) a decade's worth of Captain America comics. *facepalms a lot*

After Marvel's "Fear Itself" crossover a couple of years ago (which I actually read some of at the time, because of [personal profile] xparrot getting me sucked into the Kid Loki storyline) Steve and Bucky's storylines split into separate comic series, "Captain America" and "Winter Soldier" (which was cancelled last year sometime). "Winter Soldier" is very noirish and dark. Being all too familiar with Marvel and the fact that ALL its characters' storylines become trainwrecks sooner or later, I decided to spoil myself to know if it's worth torturing myself with the new series or not.

The answer is basically "NOPE".

... because where it leaves Bucky is apparently -- all alone, presumed dead by most of his friends, and Natasha (his girlfriend and one of his few staunch supporters throughout his entire storyline) has had her memories of their relationship erased, in a way that he's somehow responsible for (??), so even if she gets her memories back they're basically done. Way to go Marvel, YOU BASTARDS. >_<

However, having been through this before with basically every Marvel comic I have ever followed, I am reminding myself that:

• There are about a million plausible ways to improve this situation.
• Bucky is not actually dead, evil, or retconned out of existence. (At least not right now. Things could always change in the future.)
• This may not be the greatest place to jump into the character's arc, but, looking on the bright side, there would have been several worse places to jump in throughout the last few years of comics canon. Like, for example, right after "Fear Itself", in which Bucky (supposedly) died. After tearing through 7 years' worth of comics and then running smack into a wall of DEAD FAVORITE CHARACTER, I would not have been happy.
• Nearly every Marvel character has spent entire years lonely and miserable, and frequently dead as well. It's just a thing that happens when you're a Marvel character.
• Even if they do something absolutely irredeemable to comics!Bucky (WHICH THEY BETTER NOT) there's always the MCU, in which we are at the very beginning of his arc and it's likely that he's going to get some kind of happy ending (since the MCU seems to generally leave characters in a better place than they started). And Sebastian Stan is contracted for 9 movies, so there will be no shortage of MCU Bucky, methinks.

And I've gotten introduced, or in many cases re-introduced, to lots of other Marvel characters -- like my old beloved Luke Cage (now with Jessica! ♥); or new (to me) Sam and Sharon. I think I can happily swim around in everyone else's stories for a while. DAMN YOU MARVEL, I GOT OUT AND YOU SUCKED ME BACK IN.

And meanwhile I shall imagine various happy futures for Bucky until Marvel eventually gets around to giving him one.

*crosses fingers*
