I got up to 14876 with a 1024 tile! And I still have very little idea what I'm doing.

Go you! Yeah, I had gotten so stuck at about 12K that I was about to quit the game for awhile because it was getting boring. And then .... that happened ...

I guess I need to find a new way to waste time.

I've hit 1024 once. And since then it's like my ability to play has just vanished. I can't get past 512. I'm going to go back to playing Copperbadge's Chris Evan's version, there if I get stalled at least I get pretty pictures to look at.

Yeah, that's exactly what happened to me for quite awhile - the stalling out thing. I think there's an enormous luck element to it, because I'd been stuck for days and was thinking just quitting for awhile; the game that finally cracked 2048 was just a "well, I guess I'll do one more before bed for the hell of it" game, following a string of them in which I barely got to 256.

Part of me wants to take a look at the code and see if I can work out whether the game is always solvable using the correct tactics or whether it's possible to apply all the correct tactics and still end up with an unwinnable pattern in the end, but the rest of me is painfully aware how much other, more useful stuff I could get done in the time that would take.

My hunch is that the element of randomness is such that there will always be a luck factor, no matter how skilled/intuitive the user. Particularly since it throws up 4's occasionally, so you can't even count on the random numbers always being 2's. (There were a few games I lost because of a spontaneous 4 screwing up my number stacks ...) But that's just a guess; it's possible there is a perfect strategy out there.

EDIT: Okay, having tried it, and gotten absurdly high tiles (16384) I can say it's a great cure for addiction to the game. It gets spectacularly boring after a while.
