Another year in review
I am cozily ensconced at my desk with a mocha from the new drive-thru coffee hut that just opened right down the street (hey, when you live out of town, driving a mile for a coffee versus driving 10 miles is really nice!). And it is time to look back on my fannish 2013.
Now that I'm uploading all my fic to AO3, I no longer do a detailed year-end post, since I can just link to my fic on AO3. Here's some fun with stats:
2013 ficcish word count according to AO3: 178,077
As an absolute junkie for keeping track of this sort of thing, I love AO3's stats feature. My personal word-count spreadsheet says that I've written 246,000 (not counting a bit more today), which is a somewhat worse-than-usual ratio of WiPs to actual posted fic. Although the Fallen London AU is just starting to be posted at AO3, so that'll be another 10K or so.
Fandoms: White Collar only (not counting the FL fusion as a separate fandom)
# of fics posted this year: 43
This year's top fics by hits: Human Connection and Lift Me Up
This year's top fics by word count: Thursday's Child (20,186 wds) and The Measure of a Hero (20,056 wds).
It's interesting to me that I haven't written anything longer than 20K this year (in fandom, that is!). I think the main thing is that most of my longfic-writing mojo is being reserved for original fic right now. And WC doesn't lend itself to novel-length fic, at least for me, in quite the same way that sci-fi and action fandoms do. I can come up with a novel-length sci-fi plot at the drop of a hat (at least, I seemed to be able to in SGA), but it's much harder to write a mystery/heist casefic that can sustain itself over that much of a long haul. (Again, YMMV.)
Happy New Year to all of you! Thank you for the comments and the support and hugs; thank you for the wonderful thinky conversations and all the fascinating links/stories/ideas you've brought into my world over the last year. I know some people have had a really awful 2013 and some people have had a better one, but here's hoping 2014 will be a bright year for all of us.
