Well, I'm just Posty McPostsalot this weekend.

I watched Legend of Korra while working on my lab tonight (up to 2x04), although I wasn't sure if I was going to get there because I ended up cursing a lot at Nickelodeon's streaming player, which stalled out EVERY TEN SECONDS I SWEAR -- it took me an hour to watch the first 22-minute episode. Eventually I figured out that it really didn't like me doing other things in the background. Once I stopped trying to use Excel, the player ran smooth as glass for the rest of the show. I guess that's a sign that I just don't need to be doing homework on a Saturday night.

First of all: BLUEBERRY SPICEHEAD. The whole scene with Ikki and the baby sky bison had me making squeaky noises of glee and joy and SQUEEEEEEE. Pleeeeeease can Blueberry Spicehead and her family come back later in the show, oh pleeeeeeeease. :D :D :D

... but boy am I conflicted on this show.

Okay, so first of all, I love EVERYTHING to do with the airfamily and Tenzin's siblings and their whole family dynamic. I love watching the grown siblings interacting with each other, working out old resentments and squabbling while still loving each other, and as for Tenzin's kids, it's such perfect spot-on sibling dynamics that I just can't get over my adoration of it. Everything airfamily is GOLD. I ADORE the kids and I love all the hints about everyone's past family dynamics. I basically want this to be the airfamily show.

Sadly it's not.

And ... I don't know. I kept wanting to fast-forward through the Water Tribe parts. I'm really enjoying the worldbuilding, but find the politics pretty dull. I HATE the entire Bolin/Eska storyline with a passion. Mako and Asami are just kind of there. The fights are beautifully choreographed but not really engaging at all, I think because I don't really care about -- well, it's not that I don't care about the characters so much as not really being that engaged in the way they interact with each other, if that makes any sense. I've always been as much about the connections between the characters as the individual characters themselves, and the main team just doesn't click together in a way that really makes me panic on their behalf when they're in trouble. It's really sad ... in about 10 minutes of Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi interacting with each other, I adored them and grooved on their relationship in a way I didn't really manage to achieve for the core team in all four episodes of the new season.

I do like Mako's supportive-boyfriend thing -- I like him a lot better in S2 than in S1, or at least I did up until the "leech" comment, which considering that the only person we've seen him break up with so far is Asami ... ICK. NO BISCUIT, MAKO. It'd be easier to buy Mako as a ladies' man if we'd seen him being anything other than an emotionally constipated loner in season one, and while he IS a teenage guy and I can see him playing the smooth, experienced older brother role for Bolin's benefit, I still keep coming back to ICK.

And I hate the Eska/Bolin storyline so much that it tends to overshadow every scene they're in. I hate that Bolin is being treated as comic relief and the whole thing played as funny, I hate his friends making it basically his fault, I hate Eska being portrayed as the "crazy ex" ... I pretty much just hate the whole thing SO MUCH. (Although Bolin's voice actor is really great. I love the way he handles Bolin's tonal shifts. "IT'S IN THE ENGINE!!!")

But I really love aaaaaall the airfamily stuff. And the show is still so gorgeous (all the parts with the trees and spirits and southern lights in the first episode, wow! STEAMPUNK SNOWMOBILES!). And I like the core characters, I just don't love them as much as I'd like to.

Discussion welcome!
