Cleaning out the open tabs
I found this post on Cordelia's Honor very interesting because it approaches Cordelia's "people before principles" philosophy from a different angle than I've generally seen it discussed in fandom, which is overall pretty positive towards the idea. I haven't commented over there (yet?) because I'm not honestly sure how I feel about it -- I mean, generally speaking I completely agree that Cordelia moving heaven and earth to save her son while wanting everyone else to stand firm against the hostage-takers is discomfort-inducing (not that I can't understand her reasoning or sympathize, but this is something that you run into in a lot of books/TV shows/etc, where the characters are far more motivated to save THEIR friends and loved ones than concerned about other people in the same situation). But as far as the general "people before principles" thing, I'm really not sure where I stand (I can see both sides, I guess) and I've been sort of musing on it ever since I read the post. (Loads of Vorkosigan-verse spoilers in the link, of course.)
I came across an interesting little article on a rather terrifying airport in Nepal. (Although living in Alaska gives you a different perspective on such things, I guess; I mostly read this thinking, "Yup, that sounds familiar" *g* ... including being weathered in for days at a time, and nearly hitting trees and mountains on takeoff ...)
I swear I had more things I wanted to link to, but I can't remember them now. Also, I kinda feel like I'm coming down with another cold. Yesterday I JUST took the last of the antibiotics that wiped out the thing that knocked me down for the first two weeks of June. I think my warranty has run out! Vitamin C, stat!
