(it made me write porn! Twice! Well, only once was actually porny the other was just implied porn. But still. Me! I *don't* write porn. *runs and hides under pillow of gen*)
LOL! The one I posted was actually going to be porn. I was trying to write porn, and fluffy kissing-fic came out instead. At the rate I'm going, I might be writing actual porn by, oh, 2012 or so. *g*
There's something marvelously freeing about comment-fic. It doesn't have to make sense and there's no need for such pesky things as "setup" and "context". *g* It's really quite addictive!
Hee :) That sounds about right. Porn is HARD and I'm so going back to my gen and not-pron, I think. (until, you know, next time).
(I almost just gave up on mine and wrote *fade to black* instead)
Comment-fic IS freeing. And it's a fun place to experiment and try new things - characters or pairings of characters or styles of writing or (baby)plots. I'm kinda loving it.
*grin* Glad you liked it! They don't break my brain, although speaking in terms of actual canon, I don't consider them an especially likely or plausible couple. But there is just so much cute fic out there, and it's such a fascinating dynamic to explore that I can't resist it.
For me it's probably just a matter of time - in the first blush of fandom I tend to be more canon-whorish, and since I'm getting what I want there's no need to seek out other stuff. But once I've run out of the gen, I'll probably move along to the slash. I have read a few stories, and liked 'em...there's a lotta great authors writing SGA slash! It's just, yeah, I have a hard time seeing it. And if I *make* myself try to see it now it's liable to mess up my take on the chars, if that makes sense. I don't really want to be slashing them while watching the show itself, because it'll just get frustrating! (most of the pairings I do slash, I can convince myself that they actually are in a relationship, just off-screen. McShep, not so much, and I don't really care for UST, even if it's UST that only exists in my head, so...!)
Ha! I know exactly what you mean on both counts -- with wanting more canon-compliant stories in the beginning (and SGA such a gen and h/c wonderland that there's not really the incentive to hunt for non-gen stories as there is in less gen-heavy fandoms), and not wanting slash-reading to affect the watching of the show itself. SGA is the first fandom where I've actively sought out slash (well, not counting fandoms where the slash is canon, or at least heavily suggested by canon, like Saiyuki) and even so, I have to be in the right mood for it. When I'm getting new episodes, I'm usually not in that mood, because I don't enjoy having that particular slant on the characters bleed over into what I see onscreen.

I am not really sure what it is that makes me enjoy McShep slash so much. I'm really not a shipper, because not only do I not see them as being a plausible couple, but I would really hate to see a sexual element introduced into their wonderful character sibling-ish dynamic (even if TPTB were inclined to do such a thing, which I seriously doubt). And I do need to be in the right mood. But under the right circumstances, I really enjoy it; I think at least part of it is that they're both so repressed that it isn't really possible to take them very far with h/c and still keep them in character, so slash is the only way to get the heavier sorts of "smarm" to work.
I know what would draw me to McShep - the jealousy factor, more than anything else; I don't really want to see them with anyone else, so if I want them to have a sex life, it would be with one another. ...or actually the whole team, because the thing that turns me *off* of McShep is elevating Sheppard-McKay's relationship above the rest of the team. Their particular friendship is special and unique (and my favorite thing!), but I don't think Sheppard would ever put one of his 'family' above any of the others (or even could, though it'd be fun to force him to it and watch him break into teeny pieces...) But since I see Sheppard as largely asexual/uninterested, and McKay has an interest in sex but it's lower on the list than he cares to admit...and I don't see either of them really getting into a long-term relationship with anyone, not at this point in their lives...there's no 'need' to slash them.

This is totally true...if frustrating at times. I want a hug, dang it! But it's so very not in character for either of them...they're both so terrible at any kind of physical contact whatsoever. Though I have a bad feeling that might even carry over into sex (I know Sheppard's reputation - in fanon and on Atlantis - but he seems pretty dang awkward to me with half the women throwing themselves at him anyway! XP) (There was this one pseudo-slash fic I found that they were misinterpreting their friendship, tried to go at it and failed utterly...it was so absolutely how I picture the chars...!)
...hmm, so, okay, is there any slash that takes advantage of its slashiness to bring the h/c to the next level? ^^;
