Yuletide!

The Yuletide archive is open! \o/ (Listed here by fandom.) And in the spirit of Christmas miracles, it isn't slow at all. It may slow down later, once everyone in the US and Europe is up (it's at times like this that I appreciate being in one of the farthest-west time zones on the planet), but I remember in years past that it was so dog-slow in the first few hours that I usually couldn't even get it to load, and this year it's smooth as glass. THANK YOU, AO3 PEOPLE!

I didn't participate in Yuletide this year, and actually wasn't sure how much reading I'd do -- there aren't really any small fandoms I'm into right now, or at least I didn't think so, but after browsing the fandoms list I have eleventybillion tabs open and have already found a couple of fics I adore and a bunch more that I'm really looking forward to reading, so ... perhaps I'm more enthusiastic than I thought. :D I will definitely be making a recs list! But now I really must go to bed.*

*As soon as I read one more story. Or three.

I just went and looked for White Collar fics, and there were none! D:

Will have to console myself with Avengers fic and chocolate, alas.

And yet there's some for Avengers, weird.

It is all of the awesome, yes, I am trying to pace myself rather than inhaling it.

I just saw! \o/ Didn't think it be up so early. I went and grabbed like 40000 words' worth of fic just in case it won't stay as stable.

And only one of the stories in my litte fandoms is an Avengers crossover, thank god. I feared there would be more. I love Avengers, but I don't want it meshed in with my other fandoms.

Yeah, I thought of that just after I commented.

*pats it too*

I love the relationship dynamics in the show and in fics where it's OT3 or just gen with that canon power balance thing, and yet the fic I've written for it so far is totally gen, with kid Neal, WTF, brain?

Have to say, Shelter is my favourite AU of the fandom, btw.

I find, with the smaller fandoms, I get a bit peeved if I have to really dig for the actual canon fics when searching on AO3 by hit or kudos. I know with White Collar, on the first page, there's a bunch of fics that have taken the premise from White Collar and used it for fics for fandoms like Hawaii Five O and Teen Wolf, which I have no problem with, don't get me wrong, but I don't know of a way to filter those out, and because the fandoms are so much bigger, they're ALWAYS gonna be at the top, unless the small fandom explodes with activity or the fic itself is removed from AO3.

Yeah, I agree. Out of 20 stories in my smaller fandoms, usually at least five are Avengers or multiverse crossover based on the premise that characters who're nothing alike but played by the same actor are secretly the same person. They kind of drive me nuts because I don't see it at all. And I want to actually read about the characters of my small fandoms! I mean, I don't begrudge people who like those crossovers their fun but I really wish I could filter them out. The other day I checked the fic tag for "The Hurt Locker" and the first six or seven were Clint/Coulson stories, both characters who weren't anywhere near the movie.

Hm, maybe it would be possible that the archive adds an automatic 'crossover' tag whenever someone lists two different canon tags. I wonder.

The problem with this comes with things that naturally come under several canons - like, people might tag a story with both Iron Man 2 and Thor tags, if it's taking place in that bracket of time in Marvel Avengers 'verse, but it's not technically a crossover, because the universe is interconnected. Or with fandoms that have crossover episodes between different TV series - Buffy and Angel are interconnected most obviously, but what about the C.S.I. franchises that have characters crossing over between the shows, like the episodes that were linked between C.S.I and C.S.I. Miami, or, that were linked with Without A Trace or Cold Case?

I mean, I think you could put something in place, but it would be really had to police or regulate. And I kind of like that AO3 is a place where I can tag how I like, with what I like, without censorship. So, I'll take that, with the minor inconvenience of having to dig for what I want, over an LJ comm with a dictatorial mod. That was what led me to open an AO3 account in the first place, lol.
