Commentfic

Link from [livejournal.com profile] abysinnia4077: Pornucopia! It's a commentfic-fest, with a variety of prompts to choose from, both SG-1 and Atlantis. Since it's open to gen and non-smut as well as porn, I decided to put in a showing from the gen side of things. It's kinda fun to write something just for fun, without a plot or purpose. (And yes, I appear to be procrastinating on my NaNo novel, which does not bode well for the rest of the month. *g*)

Yay you wrote something and pimped the pornucopia!

(and, yes, there is something freeing about comment!fic - you don't need to make it as careful and polished and everything or worry about intricacies)

Have fun procrastinating on your novel!

I was hoping that it would be a nice writing exercise to start off the day, but all I seem to want to do now is read fic. Curses, foiled again!

Oh, on a rather different topic, can I ask you a question? I notice you've got a custom image at the top of your LJ layout -- how did you do that? I've been trying to figure out how to add one in the genficathon layout and I can't seem to get it -- it looks like in order to do that, you'd have to write a complete custom CSS sheet, and while I've done a little CSS for my website, I'm not sure if I'm competent enough to do that without breaking my page! Or is it easier than it looks?

Ha. Oops!

For my header image I went here: http://community.livejournal.com/s2howto/36903.html

and followed their instructions. It was pretty simple (required me to copy and paste a few lines of code and change the URL for where the picture was) but I'm not sure if it works with every style or not. Good luck!
(I, um, only barely know what CSS is. I've taken computer science classes and coded programs and all but any website computer stuff is a complete mystery to me)

Oh, THANK you! That was so much easier than I thought it would be! I now have a pretty new layout for [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon and I'm very happy. Thank you for the help. :)

yay easy! Glad to help (because cutting at pasting that link from where I saves it was *so* much effort :) )

Ooh, that is a very, very pretty layout! (and I'm highly amused it includes RepliCarter's shoulder). (how did I miss that you'd started the community?)

Oh dang, is that RepliCarter? (If you drag your window a little wider, you should be able to see her whole face). She's the only one of the main cast I didn't have any pictures of, so I was poking around MGM's website trying to find a good picture of her. Guess I'd better replace that one!

... and thank you for the comment! I think I could stare at that banner all day. *grin* I set up the community a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't really been pimping it hard -- too many other things going on, and sign-ups aren't for a couple of months anyway.

Oh, yes, that is definitely RepliCarter's outfit. I don't mind it, but I guess replacing it isn't a bad idea if you have a good shot - maybe S4 promo pictures? Are there any good resolution caps from the first few episodes? Grace Under Pressure? McKay and Mrs. Miller? Since then she'd have long hair which she has on SGA (*refrains from ranting about that again*)?

But yeah that banner is REALLY pretty. I'm very envious of people who can make graphics programs do collage-type images.

Okay, I went and replaced it with a screenshot from "Doppelganger". It's probably better to use a shot of her in her SGA uniform and hairstyle anyway (though I, like you, prefer her shorter hair!).

I used the RepliCarter one because it was the only one I could find on the MGM website that had a good clear shot of her face and *didn't* have her in her very recognizable SG-1 uniform. I actually haven't seen the RepliCarter episode -- it's part of that big chunk of seasons 7-9 that I missed -- so I had no idea what I was looking at!

I really have too much fun making this sort of thing. I am not the best out there by any means, but I do love playing around in Photoshop.

That's pretty too! For some reason I'm really amused that the way my browser is cutting the image I have half of Sam's face on one side and half of Sheppard's on the other and...it's like the colonels looking over their flock or something equally weird!
(*leads fans-of-short-haired-Sam-brigade!*) :)

Ah, yeah, Sam was usually in her SG-1 uniform, wasn't she? Point.

I actually haven't seen the RepliCarter episode -- it's part of that big chunk of seasons 7-9 that I missed -- so I had no idea what I was looking at!

If I lived in Alaska I would be sitting you in front of a tv RIGHT NOW to make you watch them because OMG she is the best villian they ever came up with hands-down! So fascinating! (also, the two-part episode where she is the most villiany (Reckoning) is, I think, hands down the best set of episodes in the entire franchise - tightly-written plot, good characterization, action-packed and interesting and involving all the Stargate mythos and...just so good)

(And by "she" I mean Sam, of course, not RepliCarter.)

I don't even have an excuse, except for "laziness". And the kitchen needs to be cleaned. Help!

*prods* Go write. Save cleaning the kitchen for when you get writer's block.

I think there's something about deadlines - and definitely something about writing because you have to, not because you want to - that chases the muses away. I find that when I'm trying to write something where there's a deadline involved, or it's a fic promised to someone else or the populace in general, I spend way more time on the internet, half the time rereading stuff.

I also do more "just for fun stories" too. Inspiration flows when it's at your leisure.

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2007-11-05 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny thing is, I actually do better with deadlines. I don't necessarily produce my best work, but as far as just getting something out there, that I can edit and beat into shape later -- that's how I work best, actually! Otherwise, it's too easy to just say, "Oh, I don't feel like writing right now" and sit there surfing the net while I wait for inspiration to come along. This is one of the reasons why I like to post my long stories as WIPs; otherwise, I don't seem to finish them. Sometimes the only way to make myself finish something is to give myself an artificial deadline.

I think the only time I really run into trouble is when I'm working on something I don't want to because I *have* to. Some of the ficathon stories I've signed up for have ended up that way; I end up doing massive amounts of procrastinating and ignoring the project, because the idea that the person requested isn't one that really excites me to write about. Ultimately I've been pretty happy with the results, but it's an uphill battle to get myself engaged with writing about a topic or characters that don't kick my "muse" into high gear.

It really IS fun to just sit down and write snippets without having a goal in mind. I don't do it very often, but I probably ought to do it more.
