sholio: sun on winter trees (SPN-dean dorky)

Ahoy ...!

Every year my workplace has a pumpkin carving contest between the departments. The company gives us all pumpkins and -- perhaps unwisely, given some of the people who work here -- lets us go nuts with them. This year, I volunteered to carve the department pumpkin, because a) nobody else wanted to, and b) I had an idea.

My husband thinks I need to stick word balloons on the little gourds in the boats ("Ahoy!" etc) because it's not obviously a whale without some verbal cues. I think that'd be overkill. You be the judge!

You can't see it very well in the picture, but there's a harpoon (nail) stuck in its head, tacked to the left-hand gourd with fishing line.

The original plan included red vines candy for spurting blood, but it didn't look very convincing.

It took a moment, but I got it! How cute!

cute concept, neat execution.
but I think your husband may be right--you might need labels for the imagination-challenged. I didn't get it until you told me it was a whale...

Hmm, since you're not the only one who had that problem, perhaps some explanation would be a good thing.

I first thought it was weird, but then realized it was supposed to be a whale when I saw the little boats.

Yeah, just the "whale" by itself might be a little too cryptic, but hopefully the boats are a decent clue.

I didn't get the whale concept until I read the text below. Of course, I read that without sitting here staring at the photo for very long, so I might have gotten it in the end.

It seems that a number of people had a little trouble getting it, so maybe some sort of explanation might be in order.

That is AWESOME! I don't know if I would have gotten it without your title, but if you're allowed to use a title card that would be all you needed in my opinion.

I just love the little gourd boats! And the harpoon nails! So clever!

Thanks! The nails were my husband's idea ... I was going to give them licorice sticks for candy harpoons, but it wasn't really working, so he went and got me a handful of nails from the garage and that worked much better.

So who won the contest?

It wasn't us, but they totally deserved to win -- they made a puffer-fish pumpkin that was covered, I mean literally covered, with candy corn sticking up like spikes.
