EEEEE! Sam and Dean are back!
I love Dean's manic, forced cheerfulness at the awareness of his impending demise -- it's so funny and heartbreaking at the same time, and just so very him. I'm honestly not sure how much his whole outlook on life has really changed, though; having it out in the open like this kind of highlights the fact that he's always lived this way, trying to make the most of every chance at happiness because he really doesn't expect to live that long anyway. This isn't even depression or anything so emo as that -- it's just realism, because he lives an incredibly dangerous life. Hunters, as we've seen, don't tend to live all that long.
Speaking of which, is it just me, or are they pushing the gore factor this season? I actually had to close my eyes at the Drano scene. Ewwwww.
Bobby just can't get any more awesome. And Bobby in a suit cleans up real nice. Wow. I like Tamara a lot; the only thing I know about the casting this season is that there will be some new recurring characters, but I really hope she ends up being one of them. Or at least comes back for guest appearances.
It always startles me when I get shippy about characters, because it doesn't happen very often, but I'm weirdly shippy about Bobby and Tamara. My brain just started spinning all kinds of fanfic scenarios about them -- fighting demons together, hooking up. Hmm.
(But where was Ellen? Inquiring minds want to know.)
The one false note was the really strange and unconvincing scene with the blond individual I am now calling Buffy, since I have no idea what her actual name is. Um, as far as dreadful scenes in which to introduce a character, this was pretty high up there, what with the appearing and disappearing, the martial arts moves, the magic demon-instakill knife ... and the slow motion was just the final cliche that strained my suspension of disbelief to the breaking point. I shall choose to ignore that scene and carry on with my Winchester-boys-and-Bobby squee.
So, more squee! Dean told Sam the truth about the terms of his deal with the demon -- yay for honesty! Between the end of last season's finale, and now this episode, he's basically being entirely up-front with Sam, about the facts of the situation AND about his own emotional state. Ohhhh, Dean ...

"Whats in the booooox"... hehe
How do you think dean will be saved.. i thought sam could save him...
i thought it was just dean who couldn't do anything
i wasn't to fond of buffy either.. the other girl was okay though
i am hoping at some point
this season they have Dean go a bit nuts like Mel in Lethal Weapon

I like the tack they're taking with Dean's hedonistic and slightly self-destructive behavior. It's not so over-the-top that it's ludicrous; it just reads as very Dean to me. It'll be interesting to see where it goes.

and the demon totally says 'you' to dean.. unless she meant the general 'you'
who knows... time will tell
i think its going to be some brilliant shows ahead.
i agree with you about dean not being over the top... he is very in character... i guess its just the whumper in me that wants my nutso Dean moment lol

Aside from the very very beginning with Dean's little romp in the motel, I thought this episode rocked. And, yeah, I'll agree about the gore. I'm pretty desensitized when it comes to gore but some of what happened had even me squirming a little (I do have my limits).
I am so looking forward to seeing how they handle Dean's deal with the demon, if it'll be resolved or - who knows - not. I'm really looking forward to what kind of demons they're going to face.

What struck me is that his personality isn't all that different. Like you said, no depression or anything, he's just like, "I got a year to live -- LIVE HARD AND DIE YOUNG!" That's so cool. Tragic, but cool.
Speaking of which, is it just me, or are they pushing the gore factor this season? I actually had to close my eyes at the Drano scene. Ewwwww.
No, my dinner was pretty much ruined when I realized that the skin of the dead folks on the couch resembled my tamales.
Bobby just can't get any more awesome. And Bobby in a suit cleans up real nice.
He was so cool. But my brother called it -- red shirt. It will be a surprise if Bobby makes it all season.

I like that they didn't all stay together. Hunters travel alone, it's true, but it's like they acquired another set of ears and eyes, you know? She'll be back for sure.
(But where was Ellen? Inquiring minds want to know.)
I kept thinking that throughout the episode.

It was, how shall we say this -- emo to the extreme. That was Mary Sue all the way.
he's basically being entirely up-front with Sam, about the facts of the situation AND about his own emotional state. Ohhhh, Dean ...
I love how Sam called him on being selfish, and Dean's like, "Yep. Sure am. But after what I've given for this family, I figure I deserve it." HELL YES.
::happy sigh:: Thursday night Supernatural, and Friday night Stargate! Hurray!

Yeah. I'm worried about that, too. Happily unspoiled ... but very worried. This show has quite the track record for offing secondary characters. I appreciate that losing a character now and then makes the jeopardy for the rest of them more intense, but one of the things I had really *liked* about last season was the way they'd started to build up a network of friends and allies for the Winchesters -- I hope we don't keep losing people quite so often, and that Dean and Sam can make and keep friends and people to help them out.
I like that they didn't all stay together. Hunters travel alone, it's true, but it's like they acquired another set of ears and eyes, you know?
I liked that, too! It wouldn't be very believable for them to just all hook up into one big happy group of demon-killers. But running into the same people as they wander around the country -- yes, that works very well for me.
And yes, between SPN and SGA, my weeks are very happy now. :) I don't watch much TV, so having not just one but *two* weekly shows that I really look forward to is an unusual experience for me!

I kindof assumed she would die since she is 1) black and 2) awesome so I tried to restrain the squee she was causing in me but then she lived! (sadly, I think maybe I've seen pictures of the new main hunter characters and she isn't one but I can't confirm because I'm not sure. I do *think* the chick with the magic knife is one)
Yes, the gore was pushed and, yes, EWWWWWW
Dean felt...almost too much in some ways, but it also makes sense. I'm sad they cheated us out of seeing him tell Sam about the deal, but at least they gave us that last scene of truth.
(good point about Ellen. She did kinda go poof. But we had BOBBY! I think Bobby is to SPN what Bra'tac and Jacob are to SG-1 - the regular guest character who guarantees to up an episode's awesomeness)
no subject
Eh? How do you mean? We *did* see him tell Sam -- at least the major points, last season. He didn't go into details, but he got the important parts across.
I kinda thought Tamara was going to die too, and wasn't surprised when her husband did, for, well, precisely the reasons you list. But I'm happy she lived and look forward to seeing her again; I doubt that they hinted at her unhappy past just so it could never be mentioned again!
And yay! for Bobby. I agree with you that he's this show's Bra'tac! Never thought about it, but I think you're right.
no subject
...apparently I mean that I don't watch this show closely enough to remember details and thus completely forgot about a scene....yes...can only details-obsess about one show at a time, so SG-1 AND SGA are stretching my brain :)
I so hope we get Tamara again too! *crosses fingers* (I bet we do).
(and yes to Bobby. My mom watched it with me Thursday and she hasn't seen many episodes (I usually go watch with a friend in the fandom) and she's very unimpressed, but she still really liked Bobby. He is just that awesome)
no subject
Heh. I know exactly what you mean. I think that particular scene just stuck in my head because I was so amazed that Dean told Sam the truth right up-front -- Sam did have to goad him a little, but he was pretty forthcoming with it. As far as overall canon, SPN tends not to be a show for which I obsessively remember trivia for (unlike certain other shows I could mention *g*).

And Dean talking the deal in stride. It's almost a slap in the face of all those emo!Dean is so angsty! fics that popped up all summer. I cheered for him: he knows what's happening and he's dealing in his own way :)
As soon as Tamara told her husband he was going to lose his head without her I thought *No! don't jinx it! I liked you!* Damn.
And Buffy... She's not a marysue! She's a creepy stalker! See? 'Cause she's blond and beautiful and kick-ass but also possibly insane and not in the fun way. Still... she was on screen for what? two minutes? three lines? She might yet prove to have something going for her. Oh God, unless she turns out to be Ellen and John's sekrit love child. Urgh.
And the gore. Whoa. that is something I never wanted to see, even if it's only special effects. You can show us that in close up but not the boys without pants on? I call unfair.

Oh God, unless she turns out to be Ellen and John's sekrit love child.
Eek, I hadn't even thought about the possibility that she might be a long-lost Winchester sibling! Which ... is sounding disturbingly plausible, the more I think about it. It would certainly explain where the badass-ness comes from. Although the age doesn't really work out, I don't think -- she looked to be similar in age to Sam, and I can't really see John cheating on Mary. And if she was Mary's child, Dean would surely know about her!

I liked the ep and do wonder what the heck is up with Buffy but am willing to hope (pray) that she isn't a mary sue. kripke wouldn't do that to us...would he?
I'm more curious about what some of the Pride demon was spouting off to Sam before they attacked him. What did he call him? Boy Prince? What?? What was that about? What we already know? Is there more there?
Why was Buffy there just to apparently stalk/save Sam? (cool knife, can I have it?)
Maybe it'll have something to do with Sam's eventual ability to save Dean?
I could totally be grasping at straws because...I tend to do that.
So glad the show is back.
Head Hugs for Dean and Sam both.

What did he call him? Boy Prince? What?? What was that about? What we already know? Is there more there?
At the time, I'd just assumed that Pride called him that because Sam was the one who was supposed to open the gate and let them out of Hell. There's nothing inherently special about Sam, beyond, of course, the specialness we already know about -- and he ended up being cultivated by the Yellow-Eyed Demon for a role that ultimately went to someone else.
... at least I'd assumed that at the time.
But now that I'm poking around the 'net for other people's reactions, people keep bringing up that scene, which I hadn't even thought about when it happened. So now I'm wondering if it was actually foreshadowing for this season's major arc. Hmmm!
And yes, head hugs all around. *g*

I liked Tamara, and I agree I hope she's one of the new recurring characters.
Bobby is so made of awesome, he totally won this episode. *g*

That's a good point; it'll be interesting to see how the show deals with it, because yes, she's not only more ruthless than the boys (by far!), but moreso than any hunter we've seen so far, except for Gordon. It seems that hunters are dangerous, but not wantonly careless with civilians, from what we've seen. So she's kind of messed up even for a hunter.
