Husband and I are currently watching "Community" - rather slowly, since we're on Netflix's 1-DVD-at-a-time plan and they don't have it streaming. So we've just gotten to the last disc of season 1.

But we just watched the paintball episode and I'm pretty sure that's the hardest I've laughed at anything in ages. XDDDDD

This show is rocking hard. :D There are times when I'm a little uncomfortable with the places it goes (when "mocking the tropes" degenerates into "repeating the tropes"), but all in all, it's so hilarious and so wonderfully meta -- I think hubby & I are both finding it completely hilarious because it's meta in exactly our kind of way: the things they're making fun of are the media we grew up on and the movies & stuff we watch all the time (like older-school zombie/apocalypse/action movies in the paintball episode). I think we're just exactly the right age to be enjoying this show right now.

yeah, I think you put your finger on it there - the places where the show fails the most tend to be the places where the meta doesn't work, and where the reiteration of the tropes doesn't work as parody but just as reiteration. It's not unlike hipster racism, really (which the show also indulges in), those moments when it's supposed to be satirizing something that it really just perpetuates uninterestingly.

But yeah, when they're on, they're really really on, and the simultaneous love for and gentle mocking of media squeezes my heart. Frankly, it's up from here; the second season, though it has its ups and downs, is going to wow you on "genius media savvy" grounds.

There is another paintball episode later on. :D They are definitely the best eps, IMO.

The worst is still hands-down the awful horrible no-good season one finale.

And yay, more paintball! SO MUCH META. That was hands down the best episode of the series so far.
