This may be of interest to you White Collar people

I was actually looking for something else, but I came upon various interesting links about how GPS ankle monitors work.

Someone on Metafilter asked how to foil one for fictional purposes, which led to all kinds of interesting and useful suggestions, including burying the character underground (apparently they're rather ineffective through a lot of concrete or stone) or an EMP pulse.

Or a GPS jammer, which led to this fascinating article. Apparently GPS jammers can be purchased very cheaply online (actually, when I used "GPS jammer" as search terms, those were some of the first hits that came up) and mess up anything that uses GPS, including cell phones, Navy subs and airport control towers. They are very illegal, for obvious reasons, but when you're talking about fictional characters who break the law, that doesn't matter so much ...

A young reporter on Youtube wore an ankle monitor for a week and did a video about it:

Also, though it varies from place to place, apparently ankle monitoring is frequently contracted out to security companies, not done directly by the government itself. Which makes sense, because who wants to waste a trained law enforcement officer sitting in front of a computer monitor when you can hire a security firm to do it yourself?

Somewhat tangentially, I get the impression from reading White Collar fic that a lot of writers treat it as if Peter has total discretion over where/how the ankle monitor is used, but I don't think he does -- specifically, I don't think he can just let Neal off the monitor at his own discretion, without being able to justify in a court of law that there's a good, FBI-related reason for it, any more than he could let him out of prison on a whim. (Which is what ankle monitoring is supposed to simulate.) Of course, the show itself lets the characters do all kinds of illegal things anyway, but from my admittedly limited understanding of how ankle monitors work -- based mostly upon past conversations with an RL friend whose husband was on an ankle monitor a couple of years ago -- it is still supposed to be prison, just a bigger prison. Anyway, I've occasionally run into fic that treats Peter as the bad guy for not letting Neal off the anklet for various reasons, but I don't think that's something he has the ability to do, except when actively pursuing a case.

Also, not really related to the above, but still a cool link: this young woman in Germany has been implanting magnets beneath her skin so that she can feel electric currents. SO SCI-FI, OMG.

I sometimes wonder what the government thinks of my browser search history. *g*

That video is very, very interesting. Now I want fic where Neal gets woken up in the middle of the night by the anklet getting a false reading. Mmmmh, maybe a Sarah POV... *makes notes*

The implanting magnets kind of freaked me out, especially when I read about her mistakes and accidents.

You and I don't seem to be reading the same White Collar fic. I'm not reading a lot of it any more. I went hugely into it for a short time last summer, which led me to conclude that most of it is rot. (So is most fanfic in any fandom, I'd bet, but for some I go crazy, and for others I don't. I don't know why.) I've been assuming that any writer who thinks Peter can take off or turn off the monitor at will hasn't been paying attention to the show (at least in the second season, where we clearly saw the key, and Peter didn't have it; it surely hasn't changed now).

I hadn't been thinking about GPS jammers, but surely Mozzie and Neal have been!

I totally had a plot like that where Neal's anklet is malfunctioning and goes off every time he bumps it, and Peter's all freaking out because he thinks Neal's up to something. I really need to write it one day but I need to replot it to fit the recent season.

LOL! Don't worry, that weird sound on your phoneline is just static - and the van outside your house is just the local builder...!! :D

Ditto. Especially when I'm researching bioweapons or poisons or bombs. No one has ever knocked on my door though. I'm not sure whether to be relieved or disappointed...

I have read some good WC fic, but it has been a while since I read any truly excellent ones. I'd love to see your recs. I really want friendship stories here! They have such fascinating friendships on this show! I see a lot more slash and OT3. (I'm fine with Peter/Elizabeth, but I'm not actually interested in their sex lives. I like to see other aspects of their relationship more!)

A GPS jammer wouldn't be a long-term solution, but it could be a short-term way of getting somewhere that they can cut off the monitor without injury to Neal. The first-season one could be cut easily, but the one he has now is trickier.
