I am hooooome and have a to-do list as long as my arm, so what am I doing instead? Reading the latest Dresden Files chapter (and the last preview chapter before the book comes out on the 26th - though apparently there will be early copies available at the San Diego Comicon, for those of you in the area!).

Anyway, regarding Chapter 5:

WHAT.

WHAT.

WHAT.

Bob! WHAT. WHAAAAAAT.

Okay, let's think this through. Harry's control over Bob (and presumably his mellowing influence on Bob's personality) would have ended when he died, which is something I really hadn't thought about. And Bob is obviously WAAAAYYYY more powerful on the spirit plane than in the mortal world (which again, I hadn't thought about). So, is Bob working for someone else now? Or is he actually a free agent, and we're finally seeing the "real" Bob? I am split about 50/50 here ... I can see it going either way, with both being equally plausible.

I can imagine Jim Butcher chortling evilly behind his hand about this, because IT ALL MAKES PERFECT SENSE and it is SO EVIL (at the very least, I was expecting Bob to be a friend/ally in this book) and it makes Harry's life infinitely more complicated and I did not see it coming AT ALL.

Yeeeeah, that was pretty much my reaction! I was NOT expecting Bob to be bad...and well, he still might not be, he's been used before, but...on the other hand, WHO KNOWS?!? Even from just these first few chapters, it seems all bets are off!

I think the best part about this twist was that a) it was a total surprise and yet b) it actually makes perfect sense with everything we know about Bob. It's such a disconcerting thing to have him show up as an enemy, and yet, in light of everything we know about him, there's absolutely no reason why he couldn't be; Butcher really did set this up in previous books. We know he's amoral and doesn't really care all that much which side he's on; it's just startling to be smacked in the face with it after 13 books of Bob being an ally and sort-of-friend of Harry's.

I think there were a couple of scenes in earlier books in which he told Harry that he likes working for Harry a lot better than working for Justin -- he didn't like the things Justin made him do -- which leads me to think that there's at least something in his emotional makeup that we would consider "decent" (he definitely seems to like Harry, at least), but there's no way to know if that's actually Harry's innate decency rubbing off on him and if it stopped being true when Harry died. I DON'T KNOWWWWWW!

... and yes, I loved hanging out with you guys too! It was awesome! ^___^ We must do it again sometime!

My first thought was, "Is it really Bob? It's a skull, yes, but maybe it's not Bob - Harry didn't exactly get confirmation on it, just saw it for a few brief seconds. Maybe there are other ghosts in skulls around..." But it could very well be Bob, and it would makes sense if it was.

Like you said, was not expecting that at all! Posting these first few chapters have done their job: I'm dying to read the rest of this book.
