Wow, that was a long-overdue chore ... after a rather panicky half-hour or so of not being able to get my computer to boot up yesterday, I cleaned up and backed up the hard drive. What a mess: files stashed in every nook and cranny, redundant folders, tons of half-finished posts I never posted and notes for projects I've long since forgotten about. My downloaded SGA vids alone -- most of which I'd never watched more than once -- were more than a DVD's worth, stashed in a million places all over my hard drive. No wonder I keep running out of space.

Well! Folders are all clean, everything is backed up on DVD and on my external hard drive, and if I do suffer a catastrophic system crash, the worst consequence is that I'll have to reconstruct my folder tree by copying things off DVDs.

The depressing thing is, I really haven't gotten much else done this weekend. Cleaning my computer is not supposed to take as long as cleaning my HOUSE. (Which, incidentally, is next on the agenda. One reason I haven't been doing much art is because my light table is buried under a ton of crap, and my desk is in no better shape. I feel so happy and creative with my tidy computer; now I need a tidy workspace to go with it ...)

Nice cleaned up computer, that must feel better!! And I hear you on the house front - we're trying to tidy up the house atm and it's taking a looong time!! Our Saturdays are booked for a while now *sigh*.

Yeah, I've been procrastinating on cleaning certain parts of this house because it's going to be such a gigantic chore. The big problem that I've always had with cleaning, and keeping things clean, is figuring out where to put stuff. I think it'd be easier to keep things clean if I had a better cleaning strategy.

Which is why we cleared a few things out of the loft a month ago and will be tackling the 3rd bedroom, aka The Dumping Ground, once the kitchen is all nice and clean - so we can make space for some of the downstairs stuff to go upstairs!! There is method in the madness!!!

(You'd be suprised at the number of items we found in the kitchen cupboards that we've never used in over 12 years of marriage too - all gone now! Some to the charity shop, some into the bin!)

Yeah, and there's our OTHER problem -- my husband and I are both packrats. *g* We aren't pathological about it, but neither of us finds it easy to throw out something that we might, theoretically, one day need. (Admittedly, the more stuff we accumulate, the better we get at it ...)

Yay for backups and a tidy hard drive! I recommend defragmenting your hard drive, you might recover a bit of extra space. It's technically a time-consuming process, but you can set it up right before you go to bed and it will be done when you get up, and after a backup is really the best time to do that sort of thing.

Mmm, defragging is not a bad idea. Macs tend not to benefit from it all that much, in general, but I haven't defragged this computer in the five years I've had it, and I'm always copying stuff on and off, so who knows -- it might tidy up things a lot. And you're right that now is the time to do it if I'm gonna.

This last week I had a scare on gmail when someone hacked me.
I now think I ought to move my folders and establish an address book somewhere in the event something happened and I could never access my mail acct. That happened to a friend with Yahoo.
I also need to do something about my flist
There are some who are no longer active and I need to find out if they are even interested in remaining on my flist.
I also cannot figure out how you bold someone on your flist??

If you mean bolded on someone's profile page, the bolded people are the ones you're "friends" with. (If you mean when you're viewing your flist, I have no clue ...)

I don't use webmail for anything important. All my email is downloaded and saved to my hard drive via a POP account. I do have a Yahoo account where my LJ notifications go, but in general I don't trust it (even though rationally, I expect my email is probably safer on Yahoo's servers than on my hard drive at home!).

That is the problem, none my flist on my profile page are bolded
That is what is confusing
When I look at other's profile pages they are bolded.
It is how I know if we have a flist in common...........as well as interests.

Yeah, that part works differently on other people's profile pages than on your own. Which is kind of silly; I don't know why they couldn't have it work the same.

So it shows bolded when others look at my profile??

And yeah, the cleaning up and backing up is a huge chore. But it's so nice to have a clean desktop and all my important files safely on DVDs.

Oh yeah! It really is. I laughed so hard. *lol*

With all the data on my harddrives it'll take years to clean them. Oo But I have to do it eventually. And I believe that this feeling is nice. :)

I've just gotten my new laptop, and I still need to do backups for the harddrive...[brand new and I already have a crapload of stories and half-finished fanfiction on it!]. All I've got to do is buy the DVDs/CDs to backup my computer, unfortunately, I've been stuck at home with eighteen inches of snow.
