ficathons ahoy

purimgifts. :D I did this last year and had immense fun -- you give your recipient a "gift basket" of three ficlets and three graphics. Rules and FAQ at the link. (Stories must feature characters who are a) female b) Jewish or c) persecuted by evil viziers -- thanks to A:tLA, I actually have a fandom that qualifies for that last one now! -- and you need not be Jewish to play.) I'm still dithering on whether to sign up; on the one hand, I was really looking forward to not having any ficathon deadlines hanging over me for a while! But on the other hand, I think this is one of the funnest ficathons of the year, and last year I loved preparing my ficlets and tracking down suitable graphics, so ... I DON'T KNOW. *flaily*
In SGA, there is a new community,
rononficathon, that is gauging interest in a Ronon ficathon. I know some of you on my flist are Ronon fans, so if that sounds like something you might like to participate in, hop over and vote in the poll!
sgareversebang is taking artist signups 'til the end of January, and author signups 'til Feb. 20. Still on the fence here, too. I really wouldn't mind the opportunity to do more art! But I still don't want to sign up for more ficathons. My life. So hard.

I loved writing for the artwork you did last year! I'm sure other people would share that sentiment lol. I actually am doing Reverse Bang as an artist this year too!

[only now I'm feeling bad that I didn't offer/ask for A:tLA. I knew I was missing something when I signed up]

I want to sign up ... I had immense fun last year. I guess I still have a few days to think about it.
And I think with the AO3 signup interface that you can go ahead and edit your signup until the matches are made. At least, for Yuletide you could (and I did. A lot. *g*).

as his back up..........in fact the rest of the team are there but not as prominently as Ronon..........
I knew when I first saw him in Runner that he and Sheppard would form a tight bond..........and I was right not only in series but
particularly in ff.
Have you read sgafan's Darkness Runs Deep or Coolbreeze1's Possession??
If you have not, do read them. They define Ronon a lot.

I really haven't been reading much fanfic the last year or so -- I've been working my way through my overloaded bookshelves and the library instead. There's just so much to read in the world, and never enough time to read it all!

Awhile back I belonged to the History Book Club.........I have a number of books covering some of the areas I studied as an undergrad.........
Not any fiction save for LOTR in four volumes........
That is about it in fiction.

East Europe & Middle East, but also studied other areas e.g. Russia
(I was very fortunate to have had Basil Dmytryshyn who is an expert in the area of not only Russia but Germany), Tudor England, the Renaissance, etc. My books are a mix of many areas of interest.
When I applied for the Peace Corps they offered me Turkey which was amazing given my major. I ended up in SW Turkey which has some of the richest history.
Later when I was in the Navy and stationed on embassy row, I applied to a grad program at Georgetown in Russian studies, but had to drop out as my job was interfering with evening classes.
What a disappointment.

I would love to see the Middle East sometime. Or, frankly, anything east of Austria, which is as far east as I've ever been on the Europe-Asia land mass.

To this day I don't know how we ever afforded any of it given the paltry pay we received monthly...........but we did, mostly staying in convents, monasteries, backpackers' lodges, kibbutz, and small hotels e.g. in Beruit.
It was quit an experience for my roommate and I.
We never got to Cappadocia, which I regret to this day. I haven't a clue why as we spent time on trains.
I also wish we had booked a ride on a ferry to the islands when we were in Greece. I guess ran out of time or $$$$$
I also wish we had gone down into Egypt as long as we were in So Israel
and I also envisioned a quick trip to Iraq, of course long before the war.
Probably the latter.

My sister applied to the Peace Corps a couple of years ago but, to her great disappointment, was turned down because of her student loans. Apparently they will defer student loans normally, but she was ineligible for deferment because she had consolidated her loans when she got out of grad school.

It would have been an incredible experience for her.
**sighs**
It was not the first time for regrets for me.
In 2000 I went to Nepal and India.
I had spent an inordinate amount of time in planning. I did NOT want a bus tour with a bunch of other people but had read about how it was actually as cheap to hire a car and driver. I did a lot of research on Lonely Planet as I had never been to SW Asia.

LP is an invaluable source of info on traveling anywhere.
I found a traveling companion also, another adventurous woman who also wanted to stay away from bus tours.
We wanted to do Nepal and Rajasthan part of India.
We would be gone for six weeks total.
Anyway, I made it through two weeks in Nepal, which was entirely fascinating and was well on my way in India when I hit a wall.
We were two and a half weeks into our India trip when things began to go wrong. When we got to Bundi, one of few walled cities remaining in India, things began to take go down hill. I had taken all the precautions, and then some, but began to feel ill. I sought alternative care, Ayurvedic medicine. When I saw the practitioner, he prepared some herbals for me, but cautioned me that if I was not better in a couple days to see an MD. Things continued to deteriorate. Finally when we got to Udaipur, the lake city, I went to the hospital. I was immediately hospitalized for a bad bacterial infection. My travel insurance carrier oversaw all of it including a physician in Calcutta who consulted with the doctor in Udaipur. I was in the hospital for several days on IVs. After I was discharged, I flew home.
I regret to this day that I missed some of the most fascinating areas which were left. Marge went on for the next three weeks with the driver and car to see the areas I REALLY wanted to see.
To this day I regret not seeing those areas which I missed, but the doctor in Udaipur, told me had I gone on I would have died since there was not care where I was going, other than Ayurvedic and I needed IVs etc. which they could not have provided.
BTW my travel insurance carrier, Access America, covered all the expenses, including one way airfare home and then sent me a check for the three weeks which remained in the trip.
