Artemis Fowl and other random things
1. AHAHAHAHA ... good thing Joe Flanigan's not getting typecast or anything: http://stargate-sg1-solutions.com/blog/2011/01/trailer-for-the-other-side-with-joe-flanigan/ (As seen everywhere on my flist.) And we now have independent, i.e. non-Stargate confirmation that the entire multiverse DOES look like British Columbia! ETA: Or Ireland, as half my flist has now pointed out to me. *g* Which, in a way, proves my point, I guess ...
2. I am in the middle of book 6 of Artemis Fowl and still very hooked. These books are such tasty little morsels! I also, er, bought the boxed set of the first 3 books when I went to the bookstore yesterday to get the ones the library didn't have. (What? It was cheap ...) And I love the covers! The library ones just have plain covers, but the covers for (I assume) the reprinted versions are great; they're very sci-fi and kind of comic-book-ish and exactly the aesthetic that I like. (It does bother me that Holly is described in the books as being brown-skinned and she's got clearly Caucasian skin tones on the covers, which is very disconcerting though I can't say I'm surprised. They really nailed Artemis, though, and Holly's general badassery.) You can see them on Amazon: book 1, book 2, book 3. (And while I'm at it, the boxed set! It's cheap! And very pretty! And MINE, ALL MIIIIINE. :D)
But anyway, these books! I need to make a happy flaily post about them, because they are SO much fun. I love Holly to bits, and d'awwww, Artemis has won my heart utterly with an endearing combination of ultra-competence in certain areas and complete adorkableness at everything else:
... OH ARTEMIS. You do try. <3
3. My
white_lotus fic has been sent off to the mods, YAY. I just have my
family_haven to go and then NO MORE FICATHONS for me for a while. I'm watching all the spring ficathons gearing up all over my flist, a bit wistfully, but I am determined not to sign up for anything else right now. (Though yes, Genficathon is still a go; I'll open signups in a week or two.)

"I imagine you're in great pain," he said. "It's to be expected with such a laceration." Bedside manner was not one of Artemis's strong suits. "You will have a rather large scar, but then looks are not really important to you."
Mulch squinted at Artemis through a narrowed eye. "Are you trying to be funny? Oh my God, you're not. That was actually the nicest thing you could think of to say."
... OH ARTEMIS. You do try. <3

Genficathon! Woo Hoo, I'm hoping this will inspire my muse. I'll be watching the series again as a warm up.

And yup, there will be a Genficathon!

I actually like the looks of TOS. And isn't it funny how Ireland looks like BC! It looks like 'fun'. I think if Joe is getting typecast, it's in the military/lawman role which he's suited for. He's spread himself around with "A Good Day for It", "COP" And "The Other Side"

I think it looks like escapist fun (and better than about 90% of SyFy's original movies) but it does totally crack me up that it could actually BE a Stargate AU. And yeah, when it comes to typecasting, there is probably never going to be a shortage of action/military/cop roles in Hollywood, so there are much worse things!

The cross-over and AU fic it'll generate will be amusing.

I may have to give AF another try. I read book one, liked it "just" enough to finish it but not enough to really get into it. But my tastes have changed somewhat over the years so maybe now I'll like them more.
Another book I think you might like (if you haven't all ready read it) is Leviathan. It's YA and steampunk at it's most unusual and interesting.

I do think you ought to give the next book or two in the series a try. The first one didn't really hook me, but reading the first three in rapid succession did it. The hero gets a lot more likable over the next couple of books -- at least I thought so; he's pretty unambiguously the bad guy in the first one, but the second one puts him in the position of having to ask the fairies for help, and the books just keep getting better from there. :D
I've seen Leviathan come up on my "recommended" page on Amazon. It might even be on my wish list (which in my case is basically a reminder list of books to buy later). Anyway, thanks; I'll check it out! I've been reading SO much lately, and I'm still eager for more.

The covers are nifty - none of my editions had pictures like that (I mostly have the hardcovers). I also found some fun fanart (http://artemis-fowl-group.deviantart.com/gallery/) - especially liked this anime-esque cover for The Eternity Code (http://artemis-fowl-group.deviantart.com/gallery/?set=24334322&offset=24#/d15koy1), and once you've read book 6 check out this comic version (http://megan-uosiu.deviantart.com/favourites/40096340#/d2qy2t7) of the first chapter (the narrative is somewhat awkward but the art's lovely!)

Artemis wouldn't be half so much fun if he were super-competent at everything. But he's not, and it's awfully endearing to see him utterly FAIL at human interaction, or get all anxious because he isn't good at physical stuff and he knows it. (And then he tries anyway. He always tries anyway, when important things are at stake. d'awwww, Artemis. ^_^)
And thank you for the fanart links! I already saw the anime one -- which is indeed very awesome -- but not any of the rest of it. I'll dive in wholeheartedly once I finish the series and don't have to worry about spoilers; I've already gotten a couple just from the little bit of image-searching that I've done thus far.

I am amused that despite being ostensibly fantasy, these books are actually more science-fictiony than a lot of books that are more overtly labeled as science fiction, at least in terms of coming up with clever and plausible near-future tech.

I love the technobabble of AF, it's awesome and fun, and the way fairy magic ties in with their tech is really very clever. Also, YES to everyone being as able and competent as they're described as being - I love that Butler, while having the usual bodyguard's arc of becoming too emotionally attached to his charge, still is a consummate professional most of the time; he does find the attachment distracting, but not so much that a normal person would notice! (though he will wait in a cottage for several years for Artemis to return. AWWWW!!)

"Some day in the future, after years of meditation, he might feel comfortable spontaneously hugging people" - ahaha, oh Artemis, you poor messed-up kid. *pats him* Anyway, yes, that was very very fun and totally mashed all my buttons, so thank you for the recs. ^^
I've been browsing the art on Deviantart (and, as usual, the more I use it, the more I hate Deviantart's interface *kicks it*) and wow, it makes me feel so OLD. XD It's so obvious that most of the artists are young. Really young. Like, middle-school-age. At least A:tLA has quite a few adult fans, but otherwise I've been out of anime and YA fandoms for so long that I'd forgotten what it was like.
Did you see this awesome cyberpunk Holly, though? Very cool!

And heh, yeah...I had the same problem when I got into the Ben 10 cartoon; I swear my brother are the only adults who watch the show, looking at the fandom ^^; But I like kids' stuff, dangit! (that kids' fiction is often friendship-tastic and light on romance has nothing to do with it, I'm sure :P)
And the cyberpunk Holly is awesome! The amount of talent on Deviantart - especially among kids! - is amazing ^_^

... I just ordered the two AF graphic novels from Amazon, after looking at the art and liking what I saw. I am HOOKED, hooked I tell you. >_>

Hmm, Artemis sounds fun - though I might be comparing him to another not-very-good-with-people person I know of!! *bg* Sorry, I just can't help myself!!
Looking forward to genficathon, though still not sure if I'll sign up or not.

Like I've mentioned before, sarcastic and smart is TOTALLY my kind of character, and Artemis is definitely that. (Though also, 12.)

I don't think it's my kind of thing, but I'm sure my flist will tell me ALL about it. :D
