More (yes, more) thoughts on Avatar 3x12 & 3x13

Don't you hate it when someone on your flist gets obsessed with something you really don't care about, and posts about it five times a day? Yes, I have become that person. *hides*

Carrying on from my previous post with a few more thoughts on Zuko's arc ... (Yes, I'm sure you are all shocked.)

Like I said over there, I was expecting a redemption arc for Zuko; he totally had "redeemable villain" written all over him. What I was expecting, though, inasmuch as I had expectations, was a heat-of-the-moment decision: all the little decisions he's made and the ethical qualms that have plauged him lead up to Zuko, at some critical moment, probably in the middle of a battle, making a leap of intuition and ethics, saving somebody and switching sides. Or, you know, something like that. Not that it would be completely arbitrary, just that he'd hit some sort of dramatic tipping point where he couldn't take the guilt anymore, and would suddenly and spectacularly move in a new direction.

But I like the way they actually did it so much better! I never would have expected him to spend months thinking about it, and decide on a new course of action all by himself, and then walk right up to Aang & co., prepared to apologize and try to make amends. But it speaks so well of him that he's willing to do that, and capable of doing that, as opposed to being pushed into a spur-of-the-moment change of heart by circumstance. (Okay, yes, there was the whole thing with the assassin, but Zuko had already made his decision and started working towards it; the change of heart in this case was Team Avatar's.) And watching the little group slowly try to build a tentative trust, without any external pressures forcing them to do it, is neat! It's a slow quiet build towards what may eventually become genuine friendship, rather than a DBZ-style sudden change of allegiance under pressure.

Oh man, I am so gone for this show right now. I'm pretty sure that I haven't had a fan-crush of this emotional intensity since before SGA -- I'm not saying this is going to take me away from SGA, at least I'm pretty sure it won't, but it's been so long since I've felt this way ... since I discovered SGA, I guess. There have been plenty of things I've liked and loved and fanned on, but nothing else I've wanted to roll around in -- like fannish catnip, as [livejournal.com profile] naye says. *g* It feels good!

I saw this and LOLed. I'm glad you're enjoying your fannish catnip. ;) I may not get why my cats like catnip either, but it's sure fun to watch them enjoying it. :D

I didn't read the post because I still haven't seen this series, but I'm flailing around and clicking on the "Where's My Stuff" button on Amazon, waiting for my copy of Book 1 to get here so I can join in your discussions!! Gah! It is taking forever to arrive!

Alternatively, isn't it really adorable when someone on your flist discovers something awesome and can't help sharing their joyful enthusiasm? *g*

My lack of comment isn't a lack of interest -- I've started watching AtLA, but I'm still only on season 1, so I'm trying not to get too spoiled.

No. No I don't. It's fun to watch someone else having fun! (that, and the fact that I DO care about Avatar, so it's even more fun. :D)

Your posts on this subject are fun! My best friend also watched Avatar and flailed about it all over my inbox. I gave the first ep several shots but can't seem to get into it. Maybe eventually if enough people flail I'll work myself up to another attempt?

Heh, this has been suggested. I am getting the sense that the later eps are a bit, I don't want to say darker, but less cheesy? Than the first one.
