A drive-by comment on Lost
So I'm no longer "officially" watching Lost -- but my husband still is, so I kind of tune in and out on the episodes. And hey, last night WAS the finale, so I was watching more often than not.
And they actually did something awesome for a change.
The twist with the flashback! Or rather, flash-forward. While the actual *content* of it doesn't give me any hope that the show will be any less depressing and emotionally manipulative next year, the actual twist? SWEEEEEET. See ... THIS is what got me hooked on the show in the first season, those OMFG! moments when you realize that what you *thought* was going on is really not what was going on, e.g. in Sawyer's first flashback, or Locke's.
I think one of the big things that's caused the show to suffer in the second and third seasons is that they're still *trying* to do that, but they've mostly run out of good ideas, so instead of giving you that cool and unique brain-twist, they try to fool the viewer by deliberately concealing things from them or changing plots in midstream. At least that's what it feels like to me.
But the future flashback ... that was actually pretty damn cool. And from all the mysteries raised at the end (whose funeral does Jack want Kate to attend? who is Kate living with? I'm guessing one or the other of those people is Sawyer, but it's tough to say...) I'm guessing that the time-jumping in the series next season might actually be between the present and the future as much as the present and the past. Which would be really neat.
Still not neat enough to make me overcome my growing dislike of the characters and the writers, but cool. :D
Also, apropos of nothing, I'm leaving town tomorrow and I'll be back on June 6th or thereabouts. (This isn't the Newfoundland trip; that's later.) I probably won't have Internet access, so if I suddenly stop responding to discussions, that's why. But I'll be back in June.

have a good trip!
I've actually really enjoyed some of Lost this season. Once they dropped the crazy torture stuff it got fun again.

There have been some good moments on Lost, but for me they've been far too overshadowed by the bad. I just don't really like most of the characters anymore.

Cool Icon
prostate/prostrate ... saw someone use 'prostate on the beach' once ... brought such a vivid and icky image to mind :-)
rein / reign ... all those people trying to 'reign in their desire'
ack people, learn the difference between 'breath' and 'breathe'
lose / loose ... 'lose lips sink ships' ... well it made *me* giggle
discreet / discrete ... people deciding to have a 'discrete relationship' *snort*

*grins* Me too! If someone loses their lips and the ship runs into them, the ship could sink. Well, it could!
And, yes, that prostate on the beach is just so very wrong. lol
I love your icon. That J/D almost-wedding was my favourite scene in "200". :)

I guess that if fate is determined to kill him off, he'd just have to keep dodging it for the rest of his (probably short) life, though. But I agree with you -- it's not much of a sacrifice if a person doesn't have to die!

I'm still, "But why Charlie?" and sad about it. But it was an excellent two hours of television. Nearly all of the other season finales of my shows have been disappointing this year, except CSI, so this was extremely refreshing and exciting.

I'm going with door #2, here. *grin* I've pretty much given up on Lost at this point. Every once in a while, there will be an episode that's good. There have been ... two this year, I think. Possibly three. Unfortunately, it's gotten to the point where I actively dislike the majority of the characters. As far as sympathetic characterization goes, it's been one step forward and two steps back, and the episode that really made me give up (a few weeks ago) was so absolutely wretched ... the emotional manipulation (of the characters AND the audience) made me feel actually ill. So, no. Don't. If I could go back and tell myself not to waste three years of my life on this show, I would.
But every once in a while it does still have its moments, like last night.

It still isn't enough to overcome the reasons why I've given up on the show. But, you know, between that and the fact they actually let the characters make contact with the outside world (rather than ending on a note of frustration) made it the first episode in a while that's left me with a really good feeling.
