SG-1 tag for 10x13
So I watched 10x13, "Road Not Taken" tonight (SQUEE!) and wrote this little tag. Oh, you should know I couldn't resist the temptation. This could lead to something longer; I'm not sure at this point. Erm ... if I post this on ff.net, do you suppose it'd be categorized as SG-1 or SGA? I really have no clue and would be interested to see what other people think.
Spoilers for 10x13, obviously ... at least mild ones.
Ships in the Night
The lieutenant -- Random SGC Soldier #400, from Rodney's perspective -- stuck his head in the door just as they were hooking up the final leads to Carter's machine.
"Hey, Doc, the General wants --"
"Out. Busy," Rodney snapped.
Undaunted, the soldier paused, took a breath, and resumed. "Hey, jerk, the General wants you."
"The General can wait for half a second, and get out."
Carter's eyes darted over to the soldier in the doorway. Rodney happened to be watching her at that moment, so he saw her eyes widen, just a little.
"He'll be along in a minute," she said.
Rodney didn't bother looking to see the lieutenant leave. Instead he snapped the final connections in place, and bent over his laptop because now she would be looking at him, and he didn't want to meet her eyes. Didn't want to think about what she'd told him, and about the fact that once she was gone, he'd never see Samantha Carter again -- Major, Colonel or any point in between.
"Are you ready? Because I'm not really sure about the integrity of some of these connections, and I don't know if I'd trust my life to --"
"Rodney," Sam said quietly.
The softness in her voice drew his attention in a way that the sharpest tone would not. He'd rarely heard that from her, even before they were married, on those infrequent occasions when things had been truly good between them.
"Thank you for helping me."
He swallowed, because he didn't know where he wanted this to go, what he wanted to say. Well, all right, he did know where he wanted it to go, but where she was going was another universe, and what could you do with that? His eyes slid away from hers. "When you're ready to go, I'm going to hit this button, and you do realize there's no going back from that, right? Of course you do. Look who I'm talking to. You've already done it once. Look, just ..."
He trailed off. Damn these emotional situations. "You ready?" he asked, hating the slight break in his voice.
She nodded, then seemed to steady herself, as if coming to a decision, and took a deep breath. "When I'm gone ... go talk to that guy."
"Who? What?"
"The guy who was just in here, the ... lieutenant, I guess he was. Go find him and talk to him."
"Why?" Rodney demanded.
"Just ... do. I figure I owe you something for screwing up your life." She smiled at him, a smile that hurt. God, he did like her hair this way. "This is all I can do. Go talk to him, Rodney. His name's John, and I'd guess he's as unhappy here as you are. Now, hit the button."
He hit it, and she vanished in a flash of light.

So many cute icons in this fandom.

But it's because they give us such great things to cap and make into pretty icons!

So, did John get busted down a rank or two? Poor John! That's a bit like having a multi million dollar .com business and having the air force dump you in a boxy grey lab miles underground, isn't it?
Yey!

Oh, Sam!
no subject
Yeah ... I think she would have really wanted to do something nice to repay him, especially since she's going back to another universe and no one would ever know. ;-)

Re: Ships in the Night
And that IS an amusing thought ... I think Sam is probably going to do everything she can to keep it from him, though! Especially after he told her about his underwater fantasies ... poor Sam. :D

I'm glad pretty glasses!rodney will get somebody...

I'd say stick it in the SG1 category, since it was an SG1 episode.

I think you're probably right about it being an SG-1 fic, at least as it stands. Albeit with a distinctly Atlantis sort of slant.

(Of course, now that I have seen the ep, I feel the desperate and terrible urge to write fix-it fic, because oh, Cam. But yeah.)

(I saw too much squeeing about this episode so I had to watch it - now this story actually makes sense)
I love Lt. John's rephrasing from "doc" to "jerk" and Sam's double take and the hesitant tenderness between Rodney and Sam and Sam's push to get him to talk to John.
Though I still think that in this universe John and Jack are off somewhere leading a resistance movement.
no subject
*laughs* You could be right about that! Actually, I was so focused on "OMG! Poor Cam!" and "OMG! Rodney in glasses!" to even wonder where Jack was.
I liked the way that this episode handled the Sam/Rodney relationship ... in both universes, actually. I particularly liked her equivocal response to Lorne's comment about McKay being a jerk -- which gives the impression that she doesn't think so even in *her* universe (although the idea of being married to him obviously weirds her out a lot).
This episode really had all KINDS of tag potential on both the SG-1 and SGA sides. Where's Daniel? If Vala's in jail on Earth, how did they encounter her considering how different the timelines apparently are? What's Elizabeth up to, and where's Sheppard, and Carson, and ... aaaiiieee! Too many possibilities! :D

I agree with you on the Sam/Rodney relationship - you could tell they care for each other and respect each other even with all the, um, problems? And...GLASSES!
Where's Daniel? If Vala's in jail on Earth, how did they encounter her considering how different the timelines apparently are? What's Elizabeth up to, and where's Sheppard, and Carson, and ... aaaiiieee! Too many possibilities! :D
Didn't the "real" universe say Daniel was missing and then Lorne tell Sam their Daniel was also missing? I could be mis-understanding since I have no clue what's going on in canon (or, you know, who the Ori are).
And now my brain totally wants to write about John and Jack leading the resistance movements (totally guerilla) and Elizabeth helping them because you *know* she doesn't like martial law and Sam slipped Rodney a note before she goes to go hunt down John and Jack and he joins their movement covertly (totally a secret agent because he's still working for SGC) and they win over Lorne and...something. I'm not sure what.
no subject
He's missing in 'our' universe, and I'm sure Lorne said he was missing in their universe as well.
no subject
It's stuff like this which actually makes me think Sam wouldn't be so bad on Atlantis...
no subject
For example, I liked her reaction in this episode to Lorne's comment about McKay being a jerk ... it was almost a Sheppard-esque sort of backhanded way of defending him.

Regarding McKay's development ... I like the way that they've developed his character while still keeping his "edge". He's still perfectly capable of being, say, an ass to Zelenka, or letting his ego run away with him. It makes him more interesting than if he'd gone suddenly "nice", because he clearly *is* still the person he was in Redemption -- he's just come a bit farther.
no subject
Hey, y'know that meme thing you did about snippets for near/far future for fics you've written? I'm changing my vote! I want one (near future) for this! ;-P
Oh, and if you could smuggle Lorne and Cam somewhere in there too... Just saying.
no subject
Of course, I really want to write a follow-up to this one, too.
Aargh! Too many choices! *laughs*
Glad you liked it, though! Yeah ... the only thing missing from the episode for me was a teeny bit of Sheppard. Then it would have been total perfection.

... anyway, I'm really glad you liked it, of course; I just *had* to wonder what John was doing in their depressing universe, and if AU-Glasses-Rodney ever found him! And I like to think that they strike up the same bond in the AU that they have in our universe, even if things are going to hell around them.

(If you're wondering why I'm commenting on a tag from last year, I stumbled across it when looking for Road Not Taken fic. yay!)
