F'list, you've been holding out on me! Why has no one told me about the awesomeness of Scrubs? (Although I swear someone did post about it awhile back -- [livejournal.com profile] xparrot maybe?)

I've caught an episode here and there on TV over the years, enough to be vaguely familiar with the two main guys and to get the general idea that it was a fun show, but we just finished up the first disk of season one (most of it tonight) and oh, they are all so impossibly cute! I adore the whole cast, every last one of them! (Though, er, I might have a slight weakness for Dr. Cox. Just a leeeetle bit.) I'm just kind of flailing helplessly at how much character development, affection and sheer adorableness they've managed to pack into eight half-hour episodes, and there's still so much of it to go!

Cox is (massively dysfunctional) LOVE. But, yes. [livejournal.com profile] naye was flailing before me, though I'm not sure you were on her lj then? and then she got me hooked. And yeah, they do some fantastic character stuff.

I haven't actually watched the new season yet, though I've heard surprisingly good things about it...

I've never actually seen MASH but I've heard it compared to Scrubs before. And Scrubs can go quite serious once in a while; there's one ep in s3 that made me outright cry, and there's a short arc in, umm, s5 I think, that I rewatched about half a dozen times (as a Cox fan I suspect you'll enjoy it, too ^^)

Yeah, I like Psych but I could use a wee bit more seriousness...(there's so much potential for more, and there's little tiny flashes that make my h/c'ers heart go pitter-pat, but it's frustrating...)

Heh, everyone has that reaction when I admit to not knowing MASH! I didn't actually watch much TV when I was younger - I don't like channel-surfing; I prefer to either get into a show all the way, or not watch it at all - so I missed a lot of older shows. And then, the frighteningly high number of episodes makes it a sort of scary show to consider getting "into"...a TV marathon would be useful, give me some highlights, at least!

*squee*

Yes! Scrubs is one of those shows that hit me really hard - not in a fannish way, necessarily, but just because it's so good, and so cute! It's a little too... something... for me to go fully fannish on, but it's been a happy place for years. ♥ I totally fell out of it by the end of seventh season, but I hear good things about what it's doing now, so when my viewing schedule permits, I might go back to it. Especially if you're making squeaky noises about it! Because. Yes. Cox! And also JD and Cox. And JD and Turk. And Turk and Carla. And Carla and JD. And Carla and Elliot. And - well. You see where I'm going with this. *g*

It picks up around episode 4 of the new season. Some thought it came back with episode 3, but I didn't like it much - it was trying too hard.

I love all the characters. They're all quite mad!

Heeeeeeee! The hetero life partners! And the fact that all of the characters have interesting relationships with each other, not just as proxies - if that's the word I'm looking for when you know someone as "JD's friend"... And it makes me cry! In a good way. Occasionally. But it does this thing where you think you're watching crazy comedy humor, and you are, but for all the laughs it's still about real emotions, and real people. And what that does - meep. So good.

There's something about drama that comes out of left field (but not out of nowhere) like that. It's what I enjoy about my current anime crush - it's all about lighthearted, funny stuff until it whams you with a serious moment, which hits all the harder for coming from characters you spend so much time laughing at/with. Which I like a lot better than just pure comedy - I find Psych adorable and funny, but ultimately unsatisfying, because it never goes anywhere different.

In other words - oh, Scrubs! You're making me all nostalgic for it. ♥

YAY SCRUBS!

Oh, dude, Scrubs is so much of the awesome. It's my happy show! One of them, anyway :-) And also my first Yuletide ♥. Cox is awesome, and from the first season until at least the 6th, it just keeps getting better and better!

Scrubs

I swear by Scrubs.
I love to imagine Cox and Mckay gettting into an arguement (verbal of course). Could you imagine the insults!?!

I try to imagine Cox, McKay, Josh from West Wing and House all in the same place and snarking. Then the universe inevitably explodes from the force of the snark!

[identity profile] with-apostrophe.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That was probably ME!!!

I DID post about it! Scrubs is awesome!

It's not the most consistent show, but it's fun.

It also does the occasional hard-hitting serious episode and they are extra-awesome. They usually focus on Dr Cox (we love him!) and John C McGinley (the actor) just knocks it out of the ball park performance wise (which is great because I've not thought much of him in pretty much eveything else I've seen him in).

What else is great is that they have great regular recurrings too. The Janitor (who is INSANE) becomes a regular, but then there's Sam the "Lawyer" (aww Sam!) and The Todd (who is also insane) and various others.

If you go on a fic hunt and find some good gen stuff, let me know. I've not found ANY.

[identity profile] with-apostrophe.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've found you'd do better avoiding the fic. *shudders in horror*

Ah the spoilers. It's funny, because I'd been thinking about shows and the ways in which race is presented, and Scrubs was one show I was thinking about. Kinda glad I didn't post about it, because there's episodes with humongous spoilers I would have refered to.

Scrubs is now on my 'must give this a go' list. The list is a little on the long side (!) so it may take me a while to get to it, but it's there! It does sound like fun!

SCRUBS!

Had I known you were not aware of the awesomeness that is Scrubs, I would have told you.

[just beware. It could just be me but Scrubs was one of those rare shows that would have me happy and laughing and loving it and then suddenly take this twist and I'd find myself sitting there watching it and bawling. They are *good* at what they do]

Have fun!

Yep. I didn't even try not to cry. I would sit down and stick in an episode and yes with the funny and cute and then suddenly I'd just be openly sobbing and just...WHAT? I decided I probably needed it and maybe it was cathartic to cry at the tv (I was going through some rough real-life stuff, so it was easier to cry at tv characters).

The funny and touching and sad is all woven together very effectively.

Yes! I think they might be the masters at it. And I love them for it.

(though I did have a funny experience with Scrubs when I was back living at home. I was trying to tell my mom how awesome it was and showing her random episodes.

Me: *sticks in another episode*
Characters: *talk about sex*
Mom: Why is this show all about sex?
Me: It's not. Really not a main point at all. It must just be this episode. *sticks in another episode*
Characters: *talk about sex*
Me: *sticks in ANOTHER episode*
Characters: *talk about sex*
Mom: *raises eyebrow*
Me: I SWEAR I didn't even process that they talk about sex often at all. I don't know! *flails*

This is one of my favorite shows! I love the mix of humor, parody, and a touch of angst. There's some great fan fic out there, but watch for JD/Cox slash. (Seriously, no show is safe.) My favorite fics are the JDA: JD Angst. Of course. I have a few faves, if you're interested.

Isn't Scrubs just WONDERFUL? *g* The first few episodes were a little rocky, I thought-- I watched the first three or so and couldn't get into it because I thought it was going to turn into the Epic Love Story Of JD And Elliot, but a couple years later I'd seen enough funny clips on youtube to realize how wrong I'd been, and then I watched and totally fell in love. So adorable!

(It does seem to be a show that not many people get into in a fannish way, though, which is kind of sad; I'd love to see good gen fic for it. I have issues with lopsided power dynamics in relationships, so JD/Cox, which makes up the majority of the fic out there, really does nothing for me, even though I love them both individually.)

But yes, you have what, seven seasons to go? You've got a fun ride ahead of you. *g*

[identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I love scrubs. JD's little daydreams are the best, and Cox hating everyone yet still finding it in him to be kind of, sort of, almost nice on a few occasions. And the janitor, I love the janitor :D

"But I feel guilty for singling out any one character for special love, because they're all so cute together."

Very true. Scrubs is one of those few shows where every single character is likeable.

Oh my goodness, where have you been?! Scrubs is perfection! One of the best shows I know of. Have fun watching the next seven seasons! And when done? Buy the soundtrack. I'm not kidding. I bought it off iTunes. LOL!
