"The Killing Frost" discussion

The Killing Frost is this week's topic of discussion at [livejournal.com profile] sga_talk -- the discussion can be found here. I know it's a story of staggering hugeness (the longest I've written in this fandom, I think), but hey -- crashing Daedalus! Shrieking wolves! Hypothermia! Murders and mysteries and mayhem! I remember when I was posting it in installments, a lot of people had very strong reactions to Ling's character (some loved her, others hated her for her suspicion and disdain of Rodney) and there were similarly strong pro-and-con reactions to Ronon's actions in the cave at the end. I had a few people comment that they thought the story was setting up for a slash turn and were disappointed that it didn't go in that direction. It's also a story with more, and more developed, OCs than any other story I've written -- do you think the heavy use of OCs (as well as large roles for minor characters such as Caldwell and Novak) adds to the story, or detracts from it? Did you guess the bad guys ahead of time, or were you surprised? Another possible topic to discuss on this one would be posting as a WIP vs. posting in one go -- it would be interesting to compare reactions from people who read it while I was writing it (I'm pretty sure it's the last story that I posted piece-by-piece as the writing process was underway) vs. people who read the whole thing in one go.

Discussion post is here -- have at it! I like to think that I have a thick skin for concrit, so don't hesitate to question my authorial decisions in the story; if my Sheppard is wildly off base, if you hate the fact that Teyla has almost no role in the story while Caldwell's in almost every scene, if the cause of the crash was never adequately explained or you saw my big reveals coming from a mile away or if you think that Carol Ling should die in a fire ... feel free to say so! Or hey, even if you started reading it, got bored to tears and gave up. It's a huge story and I know that it can be intimidating to tackle discussing something so large, so I'm kind of prodding a bit to get people started. *g* I'll be staying out of the discussion for the most part, but I'll be dropping in later on to answer questions, so this might also be a good time to bring up anything about the story that puzzled or confused you.

I haven't gotten to read this one yet. (I know, where have I been?) But, I'm looking forward to it. Since the discussion is going on now, I guess I'll do that this evening. I'm looking forward to it. I love your stories and I will say one thing now....."Thank you for keeping it gen." It's getting very hard to find good gen stories out there.

I know there are some people that read slash, but I can't and have had to shy away from some otherwise good stories because of it. There are some boderline stories that CAN be read as friendship and those are okay.

I don't mind long fics. I rather like them actually.

Are you sure you want ME in on this? Because I can get rather long-winded *understatement* (LOL)

I hope you get some good discussion. I think I'm going to have to sit this one out, as there's no way I can read a fic that long in time. (I voted for Songs of Athos, which is short and one I've already read.)

Thanks so much for making this post. I think we get much better discussion when authors let their flists know we're talking about them. Since this is a public post, would you mind if I linked to it in comments? I think you've done a nice job of pointing out potential areas for discussion in your work that might benefit some readers.

(And, I'm almost done with my article! Just poking around lj on a breather, so I should be able to comment sometime tomorrow.)

I always enjoy your fics, i nned reread them all. I do have a soft spot for this fic. The way you writer Ronon and Rondey is very good i like long gen fic, this is an excellent exapample of this.
