I think that reading the actors' responses to being cancelled is actually more depressing than losing the show! Rachel says the crew is like a family and they're shocked and sad not to work together anymore, and David is going to miss playing McKay. *wails* Seriously ... I don't really feel so bad for us fans -- well, okay, I kinda do, but this puts it in perspective, because we've still got each other and we've still got the world to play in if we want it, but they're losing their jobs and their friends and the characters they've gotten used to playing ... their lives, basically. *sniffle*

I do hope that they end up doing more projects like "A Dog's Breakfast" where at least some of them get to work together again. And of course there are the movies ... but what if they can't get all the actors for the movies and have to write out some of their characters? That would be worse than having none at all!

I NEED SOMETHING HAPPY NOW.

New comms discovered lately: [livejournal.com profile] jeannie_daily (for all your Jeannie/Kate Hewlett needs *squee*); [livejournal.com profile] bringthehappy, which is currently having a HAPPYFEST of comment fic (with Atlantis prompts! We need LOVE!); and [livejournal.com profile] galpalficathon - their tagline is a big turnoff for me, sadly (I feel kinda insulted by it, though maybe I'm being overly sensitive), but they're running a multifandom, female-friendship gen ficathon in September that sounds quite awesome!

Which tagline is that? (Honest question - I looked, and couldn't tell which part of it you meant.)

And - yes, a thousand times yes about the actors and the cast. And this is ME - I get depressed watching sports, because I feel bad for the losers. (TRUE STORY. I am so, so sad. ^^;;;;) So having actors I've sort of... well. "Known" sounds creepy-stalkery, but really - I do know about them, and I've met two of them and I told David Hewlett I was special, so they're real to me. ...which is good, since they ARE real.

Um. Okay, this is not my night for coherency, obviously, but. Yes. It's depressing. *kicks show-canceling meanies through the power of the internet*

The "I Will Not Be Afraid of Women" one.

Ahhhhhhhh! See, that's from a song. *g* I recognized it at once, and didn't parse the meaning, but the actual... well. The song? It's very pretty; "As Cool As I Am" by Dar Williams. And I think that's what they're referencing? Have a YouTube link! I'm not saying that makes it okay, and that you're wrong in your interpretation of it, but... hm.

Sad thoughts are making me sad! *clings* (But at least they have the movie(s)?)

Have a better link. (I really like Dar Williams! ♥)

See, I loved the tagline, but then I love the song too (I think the live version's my favourite) -- it's marvellously joyous and rueful at once.

I'm sorry it throws you off! (I assume it's the "I will not be afraid of woman" line?) If it is - it's a line from a really good Dar Williams song about, well, more or less interactions between women.

*sniffles*
(yeah, I didn't think too hard about SG-1 ending since I knew about it before I started watching the show, but the final pictures of the cast after they shot their last scene hugging each other on the gateramp like they'll never let go? *sniff*)

but look! You found happy things!

but what if they can't get all the actors for the movies and have to write out some of their characters?

*head desk* Don't say that, don't jinx it. God I'm so conflicted. I want the stupid movie if I can't have a season 6, and yet I want the entire cast to find new and better jobs as soon as possible, so that when Howe comes knocking for his movie-to-DVD, they can laugh in his face.

Regarding [livejournal.com profile] galpalficathon, I don't even get the tagline. :( It's late.

I'm not conflicted at all.

Now I'm conflicted about being conflicted, because frankly yes, I want that movie. I want "several" movies! *g* It baffles me that a group of actors as talented as the SGA actors is so little known outside of Stargate though.

Meanwhile, I have developed a morbid curiosity about the "cast that will give the Stargate franchise a younger vibe". I dwindled my list of young and desperate (ergo cheap) down to the cast of Reaper, until I found out that those actors are 27-30 years. Older than Jason Momoa.

Do TPTB have any idea what the average age of their audience is?

The entertainment industry is male dominated - most of the writers behind the scenes are white men, though thankfully that's slowly, SLOWLY changing. But why oh why do people seem to forget this and then wonder why female character might not resonate as well as male characters. It's moved on so that woman aren't quite as blatantly window dressing such as James Bond movies of past, but my god, I certainly identify a lot more readily with male protagnoists than female ones just because they're written better and I'm more likely to identify with them because of that.

A good 70% of my friends are female in real life, so it's funny that it's television where a good majority of my favourite characters are male. *snerk*

I'm still boggled at the amount of Lorne/Parrish in SGA fandom.

When I first came to SGA fandom I spent the first few months staggering around wondering who the hell Parrish even was. :D

But it's certainly more complicated than "You write about male characters, therefore you must dislike women".

I think as a gross generalisation that the entertainment industry itself is more comfortable in writing male characters and this in turn gets reflected in fandom. Eh.

The first thing I thought when it was cancelled but pretty much unprintable ;) and Ithought, crap, no more SGA, but then right after that, I thought, it sucks for us, but it's far worse for the cast/crew, who often times have mentioned the family type atmosphere. That's the truly sucky part.

Losing any job is losing a structure, a sense of belonging. I know acting is a nomadic existence, but like some of them said, they were on it for five years, so in acting years, that's a LONG time!

Yes, let's have David Make ADB #2 and this time, suck Joe Flanigan into it! ;)

>>I think that reading the actors' responses to being cancelled is actually more depressing than losing the show!<<

Yes. All the more since the actors apparently were also somewhat surprised by the decision and really hopeful to see a final 6th season before their contracts run out. Apparently all signs were well enough to point in that direction. :-( Now they don't get the 6th season and the movie might very well mean it's just done to fulfill the last year of their contracts. Of course, that's all speculation on my part but in any way, it really, really sucks.

[identity profile] flingslass.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
I do worry that we'll get the movie and that's it folks. Bugger off! I just ignore that since I have no control of anything to do with the show. I shall just wait and see what happens.
I agree with [livejournal.com profile] dovil's comments above about the industry being male dominated. The main characters are also male dominated so of course fanfic is going to concentrate on the familiar.
I'm through the initial grief. I'm into the numb part now. (Still not impressed with the comments TPTB are releasing to get themslves out of trouble. They keep digging a deeper hole.)
Oh, and I've used the icon of Paul Medhurst who plays for Collingwood (Aussie Rules Footy) Am I crazy to be seeing Joe Flanigan's hair?

*er hi**

As one of the mods for the galpalficathon, I do feel like I have to clarify the tagline and offer an apology.

It was by no means meant as an insult or an attack on anyone for any purpose. As the others mentioned above, it is a tagline from a song by Dar Williams that pretty much deals with a girl telling a boy that she will not be made to feel less because he flirts with other girls - she is "not that petty".

There are of course many layers to the song which is one of the reasons I've been a fan of her for years. Part of why I choose it is because for me it was reckons back to the day of hanging out my girlfriends in college, finding support with them, sobbing hysterically after horrible break ups; the song and my friends gave me strength when I was falling apart. The song was played at the weddings and civil unions of my friends, I've found it on my answering machine when I've had a crap day, and we are already playing it for our daughters and goddaughters.

And so when we were discussing the lack of female friendship fic (and FWIW, not all of the stuff I write has girls in it, I've written and read a lot of slash- I respect and love all types of fic), the line jumped out at me and that is why we went with it.

I am truly sorry you felt like we were insulting people because our intention has always been to do this for fun, with no guilt, to inspire and maybe get a few fics. I will go back and edit it to clarify where the tagline comes from and to ensure we are not criticizing anyone and what they write because that was never the intention.

I think if you don't know the reference and taken into account a lot of the weird stuff that can happen in fandom, your reaction is rather valid. I just need to explain the context I had for choosing it and probably got a teeny-tiny bit emo all over your LJ.

But! Now it's time to have fun and do the fic version of warm chocolate chip cookies and milk.
