dvd_commentary is currently taking sign-ups for authors and commenters, and due to the timing, I just got to worrying that my last post could be seen as an oblique criticism of that sort of thing. Which it's not. At all. I volunteered my stories over there and I'm incredibly flattered that someone did ask permission to write a commentary on one of them, which I'm looking forward very much to seeing! But I realized that I hadn't mentioned the comm at all here, and combined with the last post, I didn't want to appear that I was putting them down ...

It hadn't even crossed my mind that it could possibly be interpreted that way, but - hey! It's good to know you're signed up for dvd_commentary. ^_^ I decided to go for it, too - I like people to know that I see my fics as part of the fannish sandbox. And I mentioned that the Big Bang was up for grabs, since we're both all for that kind of thing!

Sorry, didn't mean to be confusing. No, you don't have to ask permission if the author has given blanket permission for their stories to be used. The person who is writing for me *did* ask as an extra courtesy, but it's certainly not required.

Oh, good. Because I'm doing one of your fics when I signed up for a couple and thought I messed up somehow and didn't want to appear as not showing said courtesy :D Hope you don't mind that I picked "Between The Lines" and I need to finish my thoughts before hitting the enter key :-p

I'm thinking of doing 'Knights Errant' and I hope I understand correctly that it's the story plus your own likes/thoughts on it, interspersed as you go along! Oh, how I wish I had the brain power to tackle one of your longer fics ... but let's start small and see how it goes!!!

And yes, I've opened my own fics up for commentary *is nervous*!! Sounds like it could be fun ... I hope!

There are examples of others listed on the com to give you a better idea of whats been done before. Yeah, I had to choose shorter fics as much as I love some of the larger ones.

Just as a general query--I'm not sure I totally understand the commentary thing. I looked at the rules and at one of the fics with commentary, but I didn't really get it. If it's not too complicated, because I think you know about these things better than me, can you explain what the purpose is? I just ended up confusing myself when I tried to figure it out.

Well ... I might be over-explaining here, but basically it's a DVD commentary in text form. In a DVD commentary, you watch the pictures while you listen to a director or writer or actor talking about, well, whatever comes to their mind while the scene plays (how it was shot, how it was a hundred and twelve degrees while they were filming, etc). A fic DVD commentary is the same thing only you break every few lines of text or every few paragraphs, and talk about those lines of text or that scene. Usually it would be the writer doing it, but in this particular challenge, it's being done by readers. So what you end up with is, basically, a really detailed and in-depth review.
