Well, the Big Bang deadline is almost upon us, so after we review the story one final time, Naye and I can submit it, and it's DONE. My

gateverse_remix story is also done, and has been for a while; I just need to finish coding it and post it. (The remix goes live on Monday.)

Other than that ... I've started

astridv's story that she won in the

livelongnmarry auction (it's actually cranking along pretty nicely) and otherwise ... no fannish obligations at all! Which is making me consider what I want to do next.

I feel more oppressed than inspired, at the moment, by my WIPs folder. I have several SGA stories that I hate to abandon because I just wrote so much of them, but I really haven't been inspired to work on them in a long time. I have a few unfinished SG1 stories (and I really *wanted* to finish a Teal'c story or two, damn it, especially after watching Ark of Truth) but I keep getting bogged down on those, too, usually because I'm so unfamiliar with canon after being out of the fandom for several years that I run into a wall of stuff I don't know.

It's awfully appealing to me right now to try something really different from my usual fare ... which is to say, something that's not at all gen, or something dark, or maybe both. After the season premiere, I'm especially drawn to the idea of doing a Rodney/Teyla story; I have a few ideas. I really, seriously considered signing up for

kink_bingo just to get practice at writing sex scenes, but somehow managed to talk sense into myself. Besides, I don't really want another obligation right now. I just want to play for a while.

The next porn battle is going live soon - taking prompts now - that's where I got my feet wet learning how to write sex scenes last year and it's totally commitment free - just commentfic. Maybe take a peek to stretch your boundaries?

My original idea was that I'd wanted to write stories for IBARW week again this year, like I did last year. (I didn't want to do meta because the blogosphere needs another white person writing IBARW meta like a fish needs a bicycle, so I'd asked

oyceter last year if she thought fiction would be too frivolous or self-aggrandizing. She didn't think it would, so that's what I did.) With Big Bang and all, I'd totally *forgotten* this year until I started typing something about Teal'c in another thread elsewhere tonight, and went .... wait, I had *plans* in that area! Plans which are currently in the process of falling through, because none of my stories are done and now I only have two weeks to write them!

I so understand your wanting to strech your writing muscles. I've been trying to throw around some dark plot ideas which as you know isn't typically my fare...Or for the 'fun and new' of it..write a little slash, or het..or OT4, but I haven't.

The Ronon fic was almost my springboard, but my muse preferred platonic and friendship. I've written NC-17 in CSI a couple of times, so I know I can do it..but am unsure about that in SGA...because I don't really 'ship' people per say but would like to try to write a more mature story just to play in a new world.

I say just have fun..go where the muse does.

As far as the unfinished fics...maybe have someone else read a few and give you some feedback to inspire the muse?

Regarding shipping ... yeah, exactly. I do enjoy reading the characters in a number of different pairing combinations, but at the end of the day, I prefer them as friends, and my writing tends to reflect that. (Which was why

naye and I were so astonished when our Big Bang story got slashier ... and slashier ... until finally we just gave up and went with it! This just doesn't happen to me!)

But essentially, like you said, I want to stretch my writing muscles and do something really different, even if it isn't precisely how I see the characters in canon. Actually, I suppose that's part of the writing challenge, for me -- can I take characters I see one way, and write them a different way, on purpose?

Well ... I don't know if that would be a good idea or not, really, because in the case of the two long stories I've started, I already know what's going to happen (in general terms, at least) and I know the starts are pretty good. I'm not lacking confidence or direction, which are the things a beta could provide. I'm just lacking desire to work on the stories! It's possible that I'd get inspired by talking it over with someone, but it's also possible that I'd just end up feeling pressure to work on a story I don't really want to work on. It's a good idea though...

I love Rodney/Teyla! And there's so little of it out there! The idea that's currently taken over my brain is a season 5 AU that takes off from S&R and involves Rodney and Teyla raising her baby and trying to deal with dating and step-parenting in their awkward, adorable way; I keep mentally composing little snippets of it as I go about my daily life. (Dear god, I want to write babyfic. HELLLLLP.) I can't figure out if it would be better to start a story like that now, though, with canon currently in a state of rapid flux, or to wait for the mid-season hiatus so I know what I'm going to have to work around.

Congratulations on coming so far with Big Bang and doing well on the livelongnmarry already, and I wish you luck with your WIPs -- I sympathize on that sense of oppression and responsibility to what you've begun when you're not feeling inspired, and wish I could offer advice. Yet I'm sure you'll find something that sparks your interest, and maybe that will bring some of those WIPs alive again in turn -- and if not, that's okay. Right?

But mostly I wanted to say, from one July 26-er to another, Happy Birthday! Hope it's full of joy for you.

It's a ficathon that's incest free. You can do slash, as long as it's not between family members. I'm writing a Psych story for it. Never written in this fandom so it's a little hard to get going.

I know what you mean about unfinished stories (I always have those, and I've already managed to get a collection going in SGA...) - if you want to try to force motivation to finish them, I'd suggest rewatching eps of the show dating from the time you were writing the fic, that helps kickstart me at times...but no shame in letting them go, either, frustrating as it can be.

Rodney/Teyla is fun to contemplate, I must admit (Rodney/any-all of his teammates makes me squeeful)...and dark-fic, while I don't enjoy reading it much, I do on occasion get a charge out of writing it - go for it!

At least, by this point, I've (mostly) learned not to start posting WIPs if I'm not sure I can finish them. Honestly, I'd rather let a story go if I lose interest than keep plugging at it if I don't want to write it. Original fic, sure, but there's no real reason to work on a fanfic if I don't want to.

Comic Con is as good as over, so tomorrow I plan to hang out at the beach and start sketching my own charity artwork.

I'd love to read that Rodney/Teyla story. It's weird; I rather like reading Rodney in a variety of pairings.
