Um. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN.

[livejournal.com profile] naye and I have discovered that our [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang story is not gen after all. It appears to be slash. I swear we did not do this. And yet, our 60,000 words of gen seems to have turned, entirely without our knowledge, into 60,000 words of pre-slash. I seem to recall having a discussion with someone not too long ago in which I claimed that this never, ever happens to me. Story that starts out gen and develops a pairing later on? Ha! Never happens!

Oops.

What's really funny is that we both came to the same realization more or less at once ... we'd been trying our damnedest to keep it gen and getting more and more frustrated with the story, and finally gave up on the whole gen thing, and suddenly it's all working again! Yay!

The chat kinda went south after that:

[currently stuck on plot, talking of "Rocks fall, everyone dies"]
[livejournal.com profile] naye: Oh, but we have to decide what rocks are going to fall!
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: Rocks of GAYNESS!
[livejournal.com profile] naye: Like I said - no standing around having a conference scene of talking heads for five pages...
[livejournal.com profile] naye: äshjrköhösdfljkdfjkldjkl
[livejournal.com profile] naye: I'M FALLING NOW
[livejournal.com profile] naye: OUT OF MY CHAIR
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: OOPS.
[livejournal.com profile] naye: AND IT'S YOUR FAULT!!
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: *picks up, brushes off*
[livejournal.com profile] naye: Thank you. *sits*
[livejournal.com profile] naye: *giggles*
[livejournal.com profile] naye: ROCKS OF GAYNESS
[livejournal.com profile] naye: It's like Kryptonite?
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: ... now I'm laughing almost too hard to type
[livejournal.com profile] naye: Only with more kissing.
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: Pink Kryptonite!
[livejournal.com profile] naye: .......please don't tell me it exists.
[livejournal.com profile] naye: it does, doesn't it.
[livejournal.com profile] naye: it's canon, isn't it.
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: ... I don't know. I hope not. But I wouldn't be surprised.
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: No, wait. Rainbow Kryptonite!
[livejournal.com profile] naye: Well, they must have used SOMETHING in Smallville, from what I hear. *g*
[livejournal.com profile] naye: ANYWAY.
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: There must be some on the beach...
[livejournal.com profile] naye: ROCKS.
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: ANYWAY. YES.
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: BIG GAY ROCKS.
[livejournal.com profile] naye: .sdfhildös
[livejournal.com profile] naye: HOW DID THIS HAPPEN.
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: I BLAME THE STORY
[livejournal.com profile] naye: Yeah.
[livejournal.com profile] naye: It's the whales.
[livejournal.com profile] naye: They make people gay.
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: ... oh right! Excellent point
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: XDDDD
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: ... dratted whales
[livejournal.com profile] naye: I know.

Plot manages to get plotted, but not for very long ...

[livejournal.com profile] naye: What's the point of a magic AU if they lose their mage?
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: Ronon has a magic gun!
[livejournal.com profile] naye: ........NO BRAIN BAD BRAIN
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: s;lkdjf;lasdjfl;kads
[livejournal.com profile] naye: *headdesK*
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: It's those GAY WHALE RAYS again!
[livejournal.com profile] naye: gkdhsöl
[livejournal.com profile] naye: How do slash writers ever get ANYTHING done???
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: XD
[livejournal.com profile] naye: The innuendo, it's TAKING OVER.
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: Maybe this is why there's so MUCH slash!
[livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: Once you start, you can't stop!

Edit: More of the transcript can be seen at Naye's LJ. Clearly, we are a very bad influence on each other.

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?

Wait. Asked that already. Nevermind. IT'S THE WHALES. XDD

Oh, story. ♥

O-kay. Um. XD

(But we didn't use any pink Kryptonite on the story!)

(Best. Icon. Ever!)

...actually, that would explain EVERYTHING. Pink Kryptonite on the beach! (It might be a problem if they decide to take an all-Atlantis outing there. OOPS.)

Pink Kryptonite does indeed exist and makes Superman gay. I think I can link you to scans if you like, I must have bookmarked them somewhere. It was in a Supergirl storyline, iirc.

Well, I think it might have been in some kind of storyline that wasn't part of the main Superman continuity or something, even though it was a regular DC comic, but then comics are always complicated. I don't recall the details, but according to the Wikipedia entry on kryptonite that scan comes from "Supergirl (vol. 2) #79, an alternate timeline in a 2003 Supergirl storyline by Peter David".

Still, published by DC in one of their main series. But then DC also published explicit fetish porn in which Lex Luthor is gagged, collared and whipped by a dominatrix granny (that was an Elseworld though, the one where Superman is raised by Darkside), so really it is not as if DC was prudish with its characters.

LOL....though isn't close to being pretty cracky to begin with?

:-P

I think that leaves like 4 Gen writers in this? *snort* Though this means it'll get a bigger readership.

Can't wait to see what you two have come up with, as long as you're having FUN. That's what its all about.

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
LMAO!

Oh, those silly whales. They've dragged you to the dark side! (Or perhaps the pink side in this case?)

I can't wait to read this story, either way! I've been sort of stalking the entries where you guys are talking about it, juts because it cracks me up so much.

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd probably still read it even if the Atlantis-wide orgy happened. XD I've been hooked from the moment Rodney started showing the whales Star Trek IV. Actually, I think I was hooked from the moment you and [livejournal.com profile] naye started talking about whales and desperately try to not crack up.

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
OH [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper NO!

You're not allowed to make me spit out my coffee this early in the morning! I need it to wake up and be coherent. But yes, that would be so very horrible. *scrubs brain*

I kind of wish I had the option of writing that one for BB because I want it done before the end of the year, but no, it's something completely and totally different. John just keeps making jokes about Rodney sleeping in his bed to rile him up. But it was a completely platonic and manly sleepover, I swear.

But yes, it does make me feel less of a traitor to the cause! *g*

You have to go with the story and the characters, even if they're oh so very frustrating with their incredibly complex vocations of choice decisions to take things in directions you didn't intend. As long as you guys are having fun, that's what counts! :D

[identity profile] auburnnothenna.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm torn between laughing and commiserating. I occasionally still try to write gen, especially with [livejournal.com profile] eretria and this happens to us. The gay sneaks in. It's usually my fault.

I'm also torn between disappointment and delight. I do love a good gen story and yours would be one I'm looking forward to, but on the other hand, McKay/Sheppard from you and your co-writer can only be good too.

Hmm, win-win.

Damn pink kryptonite must come right through the computer screen and affect us through the visual cortex.

[identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
*Mourns Gen*.

Oh, man, this is both amusing and depressing and ironic as I've been in a major anti-slash (well, I should say anti-pairing but slash usually gets the brunt, being more prevalent and all) mood as of late... mostly because I've run out of things to read and all I can find is slash, het, slash, het, annoying Mary-Sue dominations, slash, het and a combination of all of the above.

I won't deny it - I'm greedy. ;)

*Sticks C-4 on pink kryptonite and blows it all to heck.*

[identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
*Breaks out the vacuum*

I kind of regret not signing up. Not to add to the Gen but because, well, I write novel-length stories, anyways, and the one I just finished outlining today could have fit the bill for the challenge. Only a semi-regret, though, since I really need to get my original fic done already.

I hope they allow gen again next year, though. I'd really love to take part.

[identity profile] margec01.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
How do slash writers ever get ANYTHING done???

Oh, TOO funny! LOL

I will read your stories whether they are gen or slash. Your characters' relationships are always superb, no matter what the genre. REALLY looking forward to August, for ALL the great stories I'm expecting, gen and slash!

*hides pink kryptonite*

*whistles innocently*

BIG SMILE. OMG! Go FOR IT :)

*cough* I love your gen, and I can only say I'd be even more estatic at a pre-slash/slash LONG, meaty relationship story from you and Naye :) :) :) *tries to contain dance of joy*

[identity profile] dovil.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha! I'm going to colour a pebble pink, throw it at someone, and see if I can turn them bisexual.

[identity profile] mcalex22.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ye Gods... what's happening when reliable gen writers go astray and write slash....??? Who shall I turn to now, when I wanna read a good gen story...?

Hahaha - you both crack me up! Can I interest you in a David Hewlett, in a suit (in my lj) looking mighty fine???

[identity profile] ezazahaz.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I've always been of the opinion that glowing green stones make people bi, but if Pink Kryptonite is Superman near-canon, who am I to argue? :)

This was hilarious, and kind of inspired me, though the icon didn't turn out quite as well as I'd hoped...

I look forward to reading your oops!Slash... :)

Luckiest betas in the world, y/y/omgyes? XDDDD

Looking forward to getting more! (well, I was anyway naturally. Looking MORE forward!)

...though I've officially dropped out of the challenge myself, so the gen writer count is, erm...very tiny now? ^^;

[identity profile] flingslass.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
I just like reading what you write and it's only pre slash. Anyway I have written my very first 250 odd words! \O/ Look what you've done to me :D
Any help and advice will be much appreciated. (meaning I like the opening paragraph and then I have a problem with the rest :()

[identity profile] flingslass.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Good advice - I've only written the first bit. I'm not having a problem so much as not liking the bits where they speak. I thought I'd just try and get through it and THEN get some one to look at it. Kind of like being in school :D

Since I was lured into fic-writing for the porn and then ended up writing novel-length gen, I think it's ONLY FAIR if it works in the opposite direction too *g*.

[identity profile] unadrift.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] naye said it. Weeks ago. "It's gen, but we barely manage to keep them apart."
It's like-- fate, yes. Not your fault at all. (Fault? It's ftw!)

And you two very clearly are a bad influence on each other. Because that transcript? *dies laughing*

[identity profile] fitzwiggity.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*How did this happen?*

Surely it's entirely the stories fault. Right? (Giggles.)

I know the situation you guys are in. Appearently the pink kryptonight is catching, because my co-author and I have taken off in a completely different direction for our CSI story we're working on. (Glares at novel hidden in MSword)

I do hope you are not spreading it around...:D (I may just have to throw it back at you!)

[identity profile] fitzwiggity.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Likewise.

[identity profile] estel_angel.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything you publish will be good love gen SGA fc but also like slash and pre-slash fic. llok forward to reading it
