I signed up for

gateverse_remix, because clearly I do not have enough to do, what with Big Bang and, oh, my original writing and all. XD (Signups are open until May 26, btw in case anyone else cares to join me in my madness and increase my chances of getting a gen author to remix! Not that I'd mind remixing a pairing-focused fic, but the more, the merrier. You need 5+ stories of 1000 words or more to be eligible.)

Completely unrelated to that, I have a spoilery question for anyone who has seen Ashes to Ashes. (This is probably also quite spoilery for the Life on Mars finale.)

Do they mention anything at all about Annie? I haven't seen the show yet, but I know from cast photos and so forth that she's not in it. I know what happened to Sam, more or less, but I'm wondering if Annie's absence is explained away somehow, or if she's just gone.

Heh. I know. I really hate to commit myself to another obligation with the Big Bang deadline looming, but I really enjoyed doing the gateverse remix last year, and I didn't want to miss out this year! I wanted to do remix-redux too, but I was too busy with the genficathon to even attempt it.

August even early August would 'seem' better. In reality I'd only have one fic due..big bang but right now I'm committed to um....four stories, but by July 1 three of them would have posted....see my dilemma?

I'm only 3 episodes into Ashes (I've got all of season 1 waiting to be watched) - There is no mention of Annie.
Sam is meantioned a few times and he is seen in photos twice in the first episode. No other mentions of him or Annie in any of the other episodes... but then again, only season 1 has aired so far. I REALLY hoping Sam makes an appearance further down the track because I think it could work well.
Have you watch Ashes to Ashes yet? You know, it's good .. but its just so hard to see Gene Hunt without Sam Tyler. But if you just forget for a little bit, its not bad (at least that's what I think). I've got some theories about A2A and Sam. But I'm not going to say if you haven't watched it yet =)

I haven't watched it yet. I'm having trouble working up my enthusiasm for it because I know my own likes and dislikes pretty well, and it looks like this show is going to hit some of my "dislike" buttons. I loved LoM so thoroughly that I want to float on my warm cloud of fannish happiness for a little while yet before trying A2A ... and I'm kinda thinking of A2A as AU in my personal canon anyway (they fight crime together in Manchester forever, damn it all!). (Though I imagine that could change, if I like the show.) Anyway, thank you for the answer; that's precisely what I wanted to know!

I really love the idea of the remix challenge, but man... why does it have to fall in line so close with Big Bang? Perhaps I'll continue to flounder a bit until Labor Day.

The timing is bad, isn't it? Of course, Big Bang is such a huge thing that covers so much of the summer -- there's hardly a time that anyone else *could* hold a ficathon without the deadlines overlapping.

Yeah, but there's plenty of people not participating in Big Bang, so I can understand that they'd want to do something, especially before the new season starts up. I'm glad it has such a lengthy deadline though, because I only got to the 5K mark last night.

I really like the idea of a remix, and to my surprise I'm actually not as opposed as to writing a (light) pairing as I may have been last year. And I think I just talked myself into signing up. Come August, I swear I'm not writing anything else for the rest of the... month.

Oh yeah, definitely! I mean, it kinda sucks for those of us who are trying to do both, but most people aren't trying to do both, and it certainly isn't fair for the rest of the fandom to be on hold for those of us who are doing Big Bang.

I wonder if this makes us the workaholics of fandom? Ah well.

And I've covered my eyes on the LoM spoilers, but have grabbed the first four episodes to watch when I'm feeling less prolific.

I'm not signing up at the moment as my writing is hit and miss - sometimes I can sit down and write something - and then I hit periods where I can't seem to get anything much written (maybe the odd ficlet at most). I'm also having a problem actually finishing any longer stories!! Frustrating, but as I write for pleasure I've told myself to chill and just let it happen when it happens!!

Ashes to Ashes - no mention of Annie at all, which is a little disappointing. Just got two more eps to watch - the fact it is taking me this long to get through them tells you that I'm not overly keen. But there are these brilliant scenes here and there that just keep me watching - even though I don't really like the new girl all that much...

I think it's a case of watching it and making your own mind up - I know some people thought it was great; me, not so much.

Thanks for the info! I haven't tried A2A yet -- at this point, from all I've heard about it, I'm still in my "la la la, can't hear you" happy place with regards to the show ... I'm sure I'll watch it eventually and I'm hoping for better things (*cough*JohnSimm*cough*) next season, but I still need to coast along on my LoM cloud of fannish glee for awhile yet. However, I was thinking about writing an Annie story and I did wonder what (if anything) A2A had to say about her fate.

Colm Meaney's in it and I do like his acting (have seen some of his films as well as ST and SGA) - if anyone could play an American Gene Hunt I think he could - but overall...not sure about this!

DO keep your eyes covered! LoM is one of those shows that you NEED to watch without knowing any spoilers if you can help it! It's so much better that way.

But... so tempting! I really enjoy challenges. I always have plenty of ideas but never the motivation to write, and challenges give me the motivation.

Do you *have* to keep the pairing if you do a re-mix? I'd love to get gen versions of some slash fics where the plot is more important than the romance or lust.

If I remember right, keeping the pairing (or not adding a pairing to a gen fic) is one of the rules. Though you could probably do something peripheral to the main plot where the pairing wasn't emphasized.

Hmmmm. You know, that would be interesting if they did a remix like that - where people who do gen allow their stories to be open for slashers to do a slash version, and people who write slash to allow genners to do a gen version of their story. Het people as well.

Has anything like that been done? Just out of curiosity. Or would it be a bit hard since there aren't exactly a ton of strictly gen writers out there?

That's actually a pretty cool idea, as long as people knew what they were getting into when they signed up. About the closest thing I can think of is a multi-fandom ficathon a year or two ago that took typical slash/ship fic cliches and made gen fic out of them. But as far as what you're specifically suggesting - no, I can't remember seeing anything like that, and I think it's a neat idea!

I know I've come across slash and het summaries where I've been "man, I would love to do a gen version of a similar idea."

If anyone wants to have-at the idea, well, then... have at it, I say ;)

Yeah ... one of the things about signing up for a remix is that you *do* need to be fairly open to different sorts of fic than you'd normally write. It's a fun challenge, though! And I know there are at least a few gen people involved.

Sorry to be off topic here but I'm testing a hypothesis. Is anyone else having trouble getting past the age warning statements on LJ sites? I also seem to be unable to actually log in when requested. I have no clue as to whether or not this comment will post.

On topic. My yes, I'd love to see GEN remixes of some stories. Why isn't there more Gen, anyway? Is it easier to write romance/lust than Gen? I don't read a lot of slash, mostly just stories that come highly recommended by people whose opinions I trust, but I've read some that read more like sex (insert generic partner here) manuals than Stargate stories about Stargate characters. Is it that slash audiences are more supportive of their writers? I recall a friend who wrote only Gen in another fandom for the longest time but then dipped a toe into slash waters to play with an idea and was overwhelmed with LOCs. Is that a common experience and does that play a role in what authors choose to write?

I haven't had any problem ... but I'm always logged in, so I never see the age statements. I wonder if it could be something to do your settings?

My one big worry with the remix idea is that it would turn into a gen vs. slash thing, or one ship vs. another, and I don't want that -- I tried very hard with the genficathon to indicate that it was very much its own thing and not an attempt to be critical of the slash/het wings of fandom. A remix like the one being discussed would have quite a bit of potential for a rapid downward slide into fanwank if it wasn't handled delicately.

I see your point. On the other hand it could also be a way for an author to broaden her readership. I'll follow a favorite gen writer into slash more readily that I will try a slash author. I'm sure that must hold true from the slash to gen perspective and for others as well.
