My bookshelves are finally organized! They've been regurgitating books all over the house and it was really getting out of hand. Finally: all the books are sorted by type (art books, writing books, Alaska reference books, paperback series, graphic novels, etc) and stored in the shelves rather than reclining on flat surfaces throughout the house, including the floor. The "books to read" are now stored in a box, to be sorted into their appropriate shelf upon reading (or put into the box to take to the used bookstore for trade-in credit).

This is what my to-read pile looked like before I put it in the box. Plus a shot of the bookshelves themselves, in case anyone else is like me, and the first thing you do when you go over to a person's house is look at their bookshelves:



(The black book at the top of the pile that looks like the Metallica black album is actually Stephen King's "Carrie". Stephen King is one of a handful of absurdly prolific writers, also including Terry Pratchett and Robert Heinlein, whose books I am determined to read down to the very last one. Or at least start all of them, since I think Heinlein and King write approximately one goddawful book for every brilliant one.)

And the (annotated) bookshelves. The books are actually stacked two (for the hardbacks) and three (for the paperbacks) layers deep. I estimated I've got about a thousand books on there ... which is a LOT less than I would have had if I hadn't moved across the country twice in the last eight years. I believe the word you're looking for is "bibliophilia".

My husband is, luckily or unluckily, a packrat of a whole different type than me. Books are the main thing that I accrete; he collects computers, electronics, metal and stuff like that. I am generally known as the household purveyor of entertainment -- most of the books, DVDs and such are supplied by me.

Are you writing anymore SGA fanfic, btw?! *grins innocently*

I'll have a new story for the Secret Santa exchange at sheppard_hc, which goes live on Dec. 23. Otherwise, it's basically just been short little stories as the mood strikes me, mostly for sga-flashfic. I do have some partially completed WIPs on my hard drive, but some of them have been "jossed" by canon, and others I've sort of stalled on.

And I know how you feel about stalling - I have a few that I intend to finish, one day, hopefully, maybe! I haven't been 'jossed' yet, but it's bound to happen one day. And you know what? If the story is partially written and not *too* like the episode in question, I might just finish it anyway ('cos I'm stubborn like that!!!) and just say it was partly written before the ep shared. Then again, I might not...depends how badly I'm 'jossed' if it ever happens. The pains of writing for an ongoing show!

The trouble I'm having is not so much that the stories I want to write are made completely impossible by canon; it's when canon covers very similar territory, so we've already seen what happens when [x] takes place and there's not really any point in writing it. For example, I had a story about Rodney being replaced by a "perfect" replica; it was about half done, and then along came "McKay & Mrs. Miller". Different scenario, but pretty similar character reactions and ending.

I'd much rather have new episodes and have to toss a few old stories, though! *g*

Ah, I can see the problem, and understand. I do have a story that I'm hoping to put up end of January (part of the cousins series) that deals with an AU Rodney, which caused problems with I saw M&MM (yes, the series has taken that long, and part three most definitely, to write!) - I wanted a nice McKay. The plot requires a good guy AU, so I've tried to make him nice but not cool or 'swarmy' like Rod was. I can only hope it works out okay when I post it - but I liked my idea too much to abandon it (which I probably should have done really). Having said that, it is quite a different situation to what it sounds like you had been writing or what occurs in M&MM, so maybe I can get away with it (I hope).

And I've written and have WIP's that repeat similar ideas from previous stories of mine - which is probably the sign of a bad writer (or at the very least, an undisciplined one!). I have three teen Rodney fics on the go, and I've already published another two already (Gifted Castaway and A Rolling Stone - part 1 of the cousins series)! I'm hoping they are different enough for the readers to not mind - though I am thinking of putting these new 3 into a Teen Series; 3 individual stories but all on one theme. That's if I ever finish them, of course! And that way if I write anymore teen ones they can join the series. (And hey, I can always say it's like a really long five-ways thing! *grins*)

I really must sit down after Christmas and try and get some of the unfinished ones moved on a bit and maybe even finished. Try and be disciplined about it. (Huh, right, like *that's* ever going to happen!!)

And yeah, new episodes or more fanfic? Hmm, let me think about that for a second... Yep, more episodes!!

Weren't we talking about books not long ago? I think I've got side-tracked, sorry!
