sholio: sun on winter trees (Team Love)

*comes up for air*

I've been practically too busy to turn around the last few weeks, it feels like! Thank goodness I'll be able to go back to my beloved part-time work schedule next week and focus once again on my original writing and the [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang story that [livejournal.com profile] naye and I are writing (sadly neglected, of late). Stories continue to trickle in for [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon, where they will be updated every day from now 'till April 20th. And there are some great ones so far!

Speaking of ficathons, [livejournal.com profile] team_sga's AU Fest will be going on this month -- one of many ficathons this spring that I've been very sorry to be too busy to sign up for, because it looks like an absolute blast! The fandom really needs more all-team AUs. Here is the posting schedule. (I should note that for gen people, OT4/poly stories will not be warned for, according to the posting guidelines -- which is perfectly fair, of course, but just so you know. I imagine the ratings will be something of a giveaway, though...)

EDIT: Forgot to mention that [livejournal.com profile] team_sga also has a list of April Fool's crack mini-AUs here, as a warm-up for the actual fest itself. Fun!

Another ficathon I ran across recently that looks fun (note to self: still too busy to sign up for anything) is [livejournal.com profile] majoritython, the Majority Rules Challenge-a-Thon. It explains its mission thusly (copied from the into post):

... to celebrate the possibility that (at long, long last) either a woman or a person of color will be the next American president by producing fanworks about people of color and women in positions of political power.

This could include:
1. Slash, het or gen fic about a woman and/or person of color in any fandom who holds elected or appointed civil office, or who governs or rules a country, planet or federation.
2. RPF about a historical or contemporary person of color and/or woman who holds elected or appointed civil office, or who governs or rules a country or sovereign territory.
3. Icons, graphics and vids about any of the above.

SGA is, of course, ideally suited to something like this, since nearly every leader on the show is actually a woman, and in one case a woman of color. (This is a rather cool thing about SGA that I'd never really thought about until encountering a cartoon awhile back that pointed it out ... and, yeah, we've got Teyla, the Wraith Queens, Larrin and Elizabeth/Sam, which is very neat!)

Also, apropos of nothing having to do with fandom, my cat bit me pretty good yesterday, so if I suddenly vanish from the Internet for a couple of days, it's because I'm having emergency hand surgery and can't type. *g* (Seriously, apparently cat bites are highly prone to infection; nothing can freak a person out like looking up first aid advice and finding a bunch of horror stories of people having to rush to the hospital for emergency surgery and antibiotic IVs. With pictures! Gah!) I grew up on a farm and I've spent my whole life surrounded by animals, and this is the first time I've ever been bitten by anything, which just figures it'll be the one that turns into a septic pit of flesh-eating bacteria, wouldn't it? My tetanus shots are current, though, and I've been keeping it thoroughly disinfected, so we'll see.

Just finished reading the book "Bitten" and yup, cat bites are nothing to fool with. Their bites are actually worse than dogs, infection wise, as their fangs go in DEEP and thus inject any nasty bacteria in further, but then look on the bright side, it wasn't a Komodo dragon ;) Good luck with hand surgery!

I'm glad the ficathon appears to be doing well (even if it's helping keep you extra busy). YAY!

(also, *sends good thoughts to your hand* the cat should know better than to mess with a valuable writing/drawing tool! Also, the person who feeds it)

Okay - no getting smushed by moose, and no getting seriously injured by the pets! It should be a rule. Um. Good luck with that bite, so glad you have your tetanus shots up to date, and - tomorrow is Friday! Well. In my part of the world, it is. Maybe tomorrow is Thursday, but it's still getting close to the weekend. Just a little longer, and then - rest and relaxation and Torchwood season finale and Doctor Who! \o/

Well, I think it's funny, and also proof that Torchwood did good this season. I remember after last season, how I was all "...but season 2 will be better, please?" and you decided not to watch it, and you were right. And then they went and did this season, and I glee. ^____^

Another good thing about Torchwood (at least for the not getting too obsessed bit) is that the seasons are so short - it feels like it barely started a couple of weeks ago, and now it will be over already, and no new eps until next year. That is, if they get renewed, but I think they will. So... no new stuff distraction, and not a lot of fic distraction - it could definitely be worse!

Ouch! Yeah bites can be nasty, keep a close eye on it, though of course if you've had all your tetanus shots that'll be something you don't get.

Funnily enough I was bitten yesterday too - by a squirrel.

Yes, yes, laugh away, I realise how funny that sounds. I decided to have a go at feeding the squirrels in the park from my hand, having seen others doing so. I was ofering one a HUGE raisin, and it just ignored it and decided to go for my finger instead! Apparently I am very tasty. Fortunately it didn't even pierce the skin, but it hurt for a while - those things have powerful jaws! I walked home shaking my head, laughing inwardly and with an internal Rodney-esque monologue of "I can't believe it bit me!"

No more feeding squirrels for me....

Hope that story distracted you for a few seconds.

cat bites can turn nasty, depending on lots of factors. My friend got bitten/clawed (both) nastly when breaking up a cat fight between her cat and a stray, and it got really infected (cat scratch fever) and she had to go to the hospital, drugs for a week and draining it. *shudder* So, if in the next 10 hours or less it doesn't swell up and look puffy, you are probably fine. But the bites she got were VERY deep, and several of them on her hand.

Kind of curious - on the fic-a-thon, how did you/whoever come up with those prompts? I'm kind of curious how/why that particular number was chosen or a certain prompt was or how many were suggested. Laughed myself silly at the humor ones today.

Cat bite...

Cat bites are extremely annoying. So are cat scratches. Hope your hand gets better! :)
(Stories do look interesting, and entertaining. It'll certainly give me something new to read for a while.)

...Mind you, moose bites can be pretty nasty...

(sorry, couldn't resist. Ouch, though. Hope it's okay!)

And hee to your Owen love! *waves sekkrit Owen/Tosh flag*
