Hey...
Anybody on my friend list want to sign up to rec Sheppard and McKay friendship for
stargateficrec for April? I've been doing the category ever since its inception, but as my recs are getting later and later, I think I'm going to take a month or two off from formally reccing, and I'd hate to see the category lie fallow. You only have to come up with four stories to rec in a month. The list of stories already rec'd (not including this month, which isn't archived yet) is here.

It's doing the write-ups for the stories that takes me forever! But you don't have to write a novel ... a couple of sentences about why you liked the story will do. I'll sometimes go back to reviews I've left in order to glean out a brief, non-spoilery rec summary for the fic.
It would be awesome if you could! Sure, the category could remain open, but since it's only me that's been reccing it, I wouldn't mind getting someone else's reading tastes in there.

Many of the prolific authors in gen SGA fandom (e.g. Tipper, NotTasha, me) haven't been all that active lately, but it seems to me like there is still quite a lot of it out there, at least judging by sga-flashfic and the newsletter. There's more than I can read, at any rate; my to-read folder keeps growing and I never seem to get back to the long fics that I have saved there (though, granted, there's a fair bit of slash in there, too).
But
p.s. your icon is adorable!
Eventually I will stop editing this comment...

But
Oh thank god. Nothing against slash (au contraire), but I feel the need for a good gen story.

Eeee, thank you! Made it myself. *is very proud*

I signed up for another month of John & Rodney Friendship on
I found it quite a challenge to be honest. Most of the stories I had in mind, had been recc'd already or upon rereading teetered on the brink of pre-slash (that happened quite often actually :). Whether it is because the author has also written slash and it colors my perception, or because I didn't read the signs the first time around, but a lot of stories were decidedly slashier than I remembered!).
At any rate, I found it quite a challenge to find well-written gen stories with the focus on friendship (focus on friendship being the operative word here). There are plenty of course, but I don't want to rec the same authors over and over again. So even if the mods get back to me, I will probably bow out after June and let someone else take a turn.
At the time you said you were looking for a replacement for April and May. Would you like the category back? Or would you perhaps consider posting another appeal to your flist? You will reach a far larger group of people than I will and I would hate to see the category go dormant.
Thanks for letting me have a go at this. It was a fun experience!

You can rec something if it's been recced in another category. The only thing you can't do is rec it twice in the same category. So, say, if "John and Rodney's Big Adventure" was recced last month in the John Sheppard category, you could rec it this month in Friendship. (This was something I was confused about when I first started reccing, especially since I'd occasionally see people reccing things more than once; I had to do some deep hunting through the rules to find that particular clause!)
There's also nothing that says it has to be gen, as long as you note the pairing(s) in your rec. I know that I've recced a couple of pre-slash stories in the friendship category, and I can't think why you couldn't even rec a slash story in that category if there was a focus on the friendship rather than the relationship. I *think* I did that once, but I can't remember off the top of my head if I just thought about it and didn't.
But ... yeah, it's hard to come up with recs, isn't it? There are a lot of stories that I really love, but when it got right down to it, I didn't think they fit the category very well. There is definitely a tendency to end up reccing the same people over and over. I thought there were TONS of J/R friendship stories out there, until I actually had to find them to rec, and then, yikes, there aren't as many as I thought! Most of the ones I'd thought of as John/Rodney are really more team-focused. There's definitely a reason why I'm taking a break from reccing for awhile. I'll be happy to ask around at the end of June if anyone else wants the category, or even take it back myself for a month. (July is SGA premiere month! MORE John and Rodney! *squeaks*) Thank you again for reccing in the category for the past few months.

Yes, I didn't see anything in the user info either - but I wasn't sure, so I thought I'd better play it safe. Some readers might look at the Friendship Category as the last stronghold of Gen, and I didn't want to upset anyone. But I may sway towards pairings in June if I really run out of recs, I'm quite the happy pre-slasher myself. :)
But ... yeah, it's hard to come up with recs, isn't it?
Seriously, I had no idea it would be this hard! :) So many great stories, but it's either too much focus on the whump, too much slash, too much team, or I love the story but don't find it well-written enough to live up to the "Why this MUST be read" (that sentence is truly the death knell of my reccing abilities. I'm more of a "Why I think you might enjoy this" type of person *g*).

*meep!* 11 July! Less than four weeks! I can't wait.
