LOL, I know what you mean about Tolkein! I really enjoyed his books as a teenager, but going back and re-reading them when the movies came out, I'd completely forgotten how much of the book was spent sitting around talking for pages and pages about the history of this or that. My brain had apparently edited it down to a "best parts version" that consisted largely of hobbits fighting orcs.
