Ronon/Rodney fic recs
Okay, today is the last day of ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-community.gif)
ibarw week, and as I'm out of fic, I thought I'd offer some Ronon/Rodney links.
SGA is rather unique among my various fandoms, being the only one in which I (semi)regularly read slash. The only pairing that I read much is Sheppard/McKay, with an occasional side of Ronon/Sheppard because they're so incredibly hot separately that they're basically combustible together. However, it's not a pairing that I seek out.
And then the second half of Season 3 happened, and we started getting such lovely Ronon/Rodney scenes on the show that I started seeking out fic for them -- platonic h/c being my crack of choice, but since it's pretty sparse on the ground for them, I started turning to slash and finding some nice, sweet stories there, too.
There aren't a whole lot of links here, due mostly to my lousy organizational skills, especially for slash -- I know there are a whole lot more out there that I liked; I just can't find them. Anyway, here are a few.
Ronon/Rodney friendship
Five Ways Ronon Dex Kisses a Team Member by Minnow - the pairings in this one are Ronon/Teyla with a side dish of Ronon/Sheppard and OT4 ... but it was the platonic and lovely Ronon/Rodney vignette that really sucker-punched me. I read this story long before Season 3 turned me onto the Ronon love, but Minnow is practically prescient with her Ronon character analysis, because this is exactly the direction that the show took him.
Stupid Stuff by NotTasha - Ronon and Rodney, chased by baddies offworld. Some sweet h/c.
The Drowning Deep by Alasse Faelivrin - "Sateda" tag; Ronon and Rodney are sent to the mainland to recuperate.

hth_the_first and linabean (NC-17) - okay, so, my preference in fiction is "moderation in all things" and, very often, "less is better" -- especially when it comes to graphic sex. I don't mind that it exists, I just don't really read it, and usually find it unnecessary. But in this story, it's absolutely necessary, and sweet and wonderful and integral to the plot. In fact, this story takes most of the slash sex cliches and turns them on their ear, in a really lovely way.
Reasonable and Customary and the sequel, Preexisting Conditions, bydarkrosetiger and telesilla (PG-13) - Ronon decides to court Rodney following traditional Satedan custom. Much hilarity and also much adorableness ensues. One of the many things I love about this story is that it deals not just with Ronon and Rodney, but with the team as a whole, in all their many and varied combinations.
The McDex masterlist is a lovely resource for people looking for Ronon/Rodney stories. There are tons of stories on here. Unfortunately they're not accompanied by summaries, and I have to be in the right mood for slash anyway, so I've still barely worked my way through a fraction of the stories on the list.

I like the way you do the team interactions as a whole, and, of course, the Sheppard and McKay. There's nothing inherently wrong with not writing certain characters in prominent roles; I have a dreadful time with Carson, personally, and prefer not to use him except in the background. But there's just so much potential with Ronon that's largely untapped in fic -- I'm starting to see more gen stories featuring the Ronon-Sheppard relationship, which is great, but I want me some Ronon and Rodney, dangit!
I love him as the protector and as the strength - it's hard for me to break that down, when it's such a big part of why I love his character. It'd be like taking away Rodney's intelligence, something else I don't think I could ever do.
I do know what you mean. There are some stories that squick me quite badly by breaking down or taking away what are, to me, the fundamental traits that draw me to the characters -- Rodney's intelligence, yes, and stories that cast Sheppard in a total victim role ... those freak me out in much the same way.
On the other hand, if writing Ronon as the comfortee doesn't work for you, "rescuing the hurt Rodney" scenarios are quite nice too... *hopeful look*

While I'm not averse to characters being rescued under the right circumstances, I definitely don't want them to just woobie around waiting for someone to fix things. I have a real competence kink; I love tough, smart, resourceful characters, and I like to see them use that, rather than just dangle on the wall of a dungeon while the author TELLS us that they're smart and resourceful, but SHOWS us something else. Leaning on each other for help -- I really like that, but there's a big difference between that and simply being victims.
For "Rodney rescue", you could substitute "Rodney comfort". I'm not picky. *g*

Oh, me and Ford, we don't do too well at all. If a story of mine is set Season 1, don't expect a lot of Ford... nice guy, just can't seem to write him, which is most frustrating!! (Can't get to grips with Enzyme-Ford either!)
And if I crossover with Season 9 or 10 SG1, don't look for Vala to be in it much as I can't seem to get into her character either, and I like her a lot! (Hmm, Teal'c is a bit difficult as well, he tends to say even less than our Ronon does!!!) We all have blind spots with certain characters I guess.
Oh, and on the Ronon offering comfort side of things I think it can be done and stay in canon if you're careful - I mean, that scene in Carson's quarters in Sunday is Ronon offering comfort Ronon-style, isn't it? And with Teyla in Echoes when she's ill as well.

I feel tacky mentioning my own stuff, but, if you're interested, I have a Ronon/Rodney story, Funny Valentine (http://linabean.livejournal.com/42307.html),--it's slash with some NC-17 stuff, but I was mainly trying to write about Rodney as an unreliable narrator, so I don't feel like I put a lot of emphasis on sex.
I've also put up some chats and story ideas featuring Ronon and Rodney. Oh, not at all! I do think it's perfectly fair for people to prefer stories that have less of those things, though, so I was just trying to gear my suggestions that way, even though I'm most familiar with slash and NC-17 stuff :) And, yeah, I actually am really glad to get the reminder of how well Ronon and Rodney work as friends (OMG, ninja training! in canon!), because I still too often have a silly assumption as a slasher that hooking up two guys is the whole *point* of fanfic, rather than remembering that slash is one fun thing among many to do in fanfic.
It's great to hear the Satisfaction story worked for you! I was so glad that Hth wanted to write it, and wrote it so brilliantly. I do have a lot of fun playing around with slash conventions, and I like the idea that people really can be happy with each other even if their relationship isn't following some expected script. Plus, in addition to playing with the notion that Ronon, gorgeous and physically talented as he is, might not be the unambiguous sex god he so often is in fic, I just really liked the idea of putting Rodney McKay in a situation where he'd have to be emotionally sensitive [g]

I'm hoping my beta can get my new one - 'Rogue'- done after the kids go back to school in early September! It's my longest one yet at 21,600 or so words! Okay, peanuts compared to some of yours... but I'm pretty amazed at myself for this one!
