sholio: sun on winter trees (Rodney's poking me)

I don't know why I never see these things coming

I love my family. They are such sweet, insane dorks.

This year I asked them not to buy me anything. Financially, I'm doing fine, and there's nothing I really *need* (as opposed to stuff I just want). So I asked them to please donate a little something to a charity in my name and send me a card.

Since I've known these people all my life, I don't know why the thought never occurred to me that they would, naturally, end up conspiring to see who could come up with the oddest possible charity. Today my package from the Adopt-a-Manatee Club arrived; I am now sponsoring a manatee named Ariel. There's even a T-shirt with a tasteful little manatee on it. (When I called my dad, laughing hysterically, to let him know that I got his gift, he said that he asked them if it was possible to name the sponsored manatee, because if so, he would have named it after me. No such luck, but it's the thought that counts...)

I'm afraid to wonder what is in the mail from my sister, who giggles and changes the subject whenever the topic comes up.

I didn't forget. You might need to check back though - probably around 10.30pm postings PST. Actually, you might not want to.

That's lovely! Happy birthday!

Manatees are majestic creatures (and from here in Florida, Adopt-a-Manatee doesn't sound at all odd!). At our local zoo, they have an area where they care for injured manatees, and we always have to go there to see the manatees.

There's supposed a Manatee WebCam Dallas World Aquarium; all I see right now are fish and a turtle, but presumably one can see manatees there from time to time. They swim very elegantly, despite their bulk.

Lovely idea, and your dad's got a great sense of humour. And manatees do need help, so it's all good. Happy Belated Birthday.

I think I love your family too. The my-charity-gift-is-weirder-than-your-charity-gift competition just totally roolz!

And happy birthday! I really do suck at remembering birthdays. I thought that at least I'd never forget the birthday of my niece whose is one day before mine, but having reached an age where I'd rather not be reminded that I'm another year older... Yeah, I just totally suck at remembering birthdays.
