It looks like I might be going to St. John's at the end of June -- my husband is going there for a robotics competition, and he invited me to come along. It sounds very much like my kind of place, i.e. lots of nature and not very many people. Also, looking at the maps, it's got perhaps the highest concentration of weird place names in North America. I'm especially fond of the towns of Witless Bay and Dildo.

If you get a chance to see a band called Great Big Sea... go for it they are my favourite band and they are from there

Welp, I'm not from there but I've visited a few times. I'd have to say St. John's is my favorite place in Eastern Canada. Plenty of fun things to do plus good weather. Just look out for psychotic drivers- there's lots of them. And anytime you pass by a body of water, look for warning, contamination signs. I forget how they were worded, I just remember that they were somehow worded hilariously and that the contamination wasn't really all that bad (I just wouldn't drink it). LOL.

The robotics competition is actually a student contest; my husband is their faculty advisor. On the one hand, the timing is bad, because I'm leaving on Friday to visit my folks and this would mean taking another two weeks off from work at the end of June (at least 2 weeks -- our travel itenerary would take us through an airport that's an easy drive from where my sister lives, and since she's 5,000 miles away from me, I'm tempted to take an extra week or two to see her as well).

But ... Newfoundland! And I totally expect that the scenery will work its way into future stories, either in fanfic or original fic; that's just how my brain works...

I've never been to Newfoundland, but as far as weird town names go, there's Intercourse, PA, near Lancaster. We had a family reunion in Lancaster and did some sightseeing - my parents refused to let us kids get T-shirts that said "I love Intercourse."
