In which Gateworld makes me happy
There was only one thing missing from Tao of Rodney ... a worried John POV shot when Rodney collapses in his quarters.
And Gateworld has given me one! *squees*
I wish we'd gotten this particular angle on the final cut of the show itself, but my pathetic little fanself will take what it can get.
I *still* can't get over the fanficciness of this episode.

The Team love was just out of the ball park, such amazing moments too many to count. The meditation in John's quaters to healing Ronon's scars.
I hope one day they give Shep a 'personal heavy' eppy. We know he had "Epiphany" and "Common Ground", but I'd love to get something along the lines of "Grace Under Pressure", "Mr and Mrs Miller'..et el as in a personal story arc.
Thanks for this great pic, the worry is priceless!!!

And yes, the character episodes have been awesome; "Sateda" just totally blew me away, and the little character moments throughout the series have been too many to mention.
I'm with you, though -- I totally want a "Tao of Sheppard" or something along those lines. I think that "Epiphany" was really *supposed* to be that, but it somehow went awry and most of what *should* have been there (his abandonment complex and so forth) was so very subtextual that it doesn't really come out on the surface. Not that he hasn't gotten some good scenes and episodes, but now that my Rodney-love is so thoroughly sated, I really want something like this for John. Maybe next season...

Makes me wonder what angsty script JF pitched for season 4, that JM said in his blog was heatedly debated and will be moved to season 5, since it had aspects too similar already planned for 4.
I still think back to Shep's line "I fought a big scary monster because thats what I do.." yes John's the 'hero' in the show, but he can have a nice dramatic eppy that doesn't involve him fighting any enemy per say.
Though again loved this eppy for what we were treated to!

I got the season 2 companion book a couple of weeks ago (pathetic fangirl=me!) and according to that, Joe's original pitch was along the lines of The Man Who Would Be King with McKay and Sheppard in the pseudo-deity roles. Presumably, that idea got kicked back and later used for "The Game" instead, while the actual episode developed along different lines. All it says otherwise in the book is that Joe wanted to develop Sheppard's past in the episode but it didn't happen.
In some ways, I *like* that it's been done very subtly, because we know that he has abandonment issues, that he lost pretty much everyone he cared about in Afghanistan, that he was very isolated on Earth before coming to Atlantis -- but it's all been worked into the storylines very subtly and organically without the series ever being obvious about it. This show really does have a light/subtle touch at times that is very nice. But then there's a part of me that wants to see his abandment complex addressed in more overt detail. I think Phantoms did a pretty good job with this, but it was a part of his past (the only part of his past) that we already knew something about. Most of what we saw in Phantoms we could have guessed. There's still so much territory unexplored.

Yeah, and we've certainly seen from episodes like Tao, Irresistible, Sunday or McKay & Mrs. Miller that Joe is good at the small/subtle interactions with the other characters. It'd be nice to see an episode that really explored his range as an actor. And we know that Joe is eager to do more with Sheppard's past, too.
*fingers crossed for Season 4 ... and 5*

Still I have to admit that I loved what we got in the final cut - the worry in his voice and the fact John kept one hand on Rodney as though to assure himself that Rodney was still alive.

This was actually a pretty good character episode for John as well as Rodney, even though he wasn't in it nearly as much -- the loyalty, the abandonment issues, the refusal to give in to reality and admit that Rodney's dying.

I have just been loving the second half of this season!

The episode was great for Rodney's relationships with everyone, but especially, I think, for John and Rodney. There were so many little things - "We're good, aren't we?", John's total refusal to think about the eulogy, the way Elizabeth immediately looked to John to calm Rodney in the infirmary when he was getting upset, and Rodney immediately calmed when John started talking him down. There may have been others, but those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head.
I also loved the way it showed how strong Rodney and Elizabeth's relationship is. The ending scene was cute - Rodney harassing her about saying she loved him, and her playing along, and him knowing it. Also the joke about Sheppard using the machine. I so love this team.
Ronon and Rodney - the two hugs, especially the last one! "I don't know what any of you are talking about but" *huge hug* I love it that Ronon hugs so easily. His tackle hug of Sheppard in Return 1 was awesome.
OK. I need to stop gushing about the episode now. Sorry. And I agree with you - we need a "Tao of Sheppard" type episode now. Hopefully something will come along in Season 4.

It was a great John & Rodney episode, I agree. This is probably the #1 episode of the entire series to support the idea that John and Rodney are best friends -- even if neither one of them seem to be capable of recognizing or acknowledging it. The small and subtle ways in which Rodney leans on John when he needs support, and John's willingness to step outside his comfort zone into the dreaded realm of talking about feelings, because Rodney needs that support ... *melts all over again*
And yes, we also got great Rodney-Elizabeth, Rodney-Ronon, not to mention that the episode kicked ass on the Rodney-Zelenka front and we got a very rare Rodney-Teyla moment too! *squees*
Ronon has really surprised me this season, because I was kind of "meh" about him last season; he was entertaining, but more as comic relief or heavy muscle than as a character in his own right. But it's amazing the way he's opened up this season. In fact, the ironic thing is that of the core characters, Ronon -- the guy who lost everyone he cared about and spent seven years on the run -- is probably the most emotionally open and in tune with his feelings. I've been wanting to do a meta post on Ronon lately, because he's right up there with Rodney as a character who's gotten a lot of (fairly consistent) development and growth -- it's really obvious that late-season-3 Ronon is not the same guy as early-season-2 Ronon, but you can look back at various milestones and see how he ended up this way; you can watch him open up more and more to the people around him.

I really, really hope they let Damian Kindler (the writer of Tao) come back and write more episodes in season 4. :)

Oh, oh, I didn't notice THAT!! What sort of fan amI?!! Now that you've pointed that out, it so works, and although I am still curious about the cut scene, I think you're right about the above implication - it's better as it is.
And I agree, I do hope Damian Kindler writes more episodes.
