SG-1 10x14
That episode kicked ass. I haven't loved an SG-1 episode this much in ages. (Well, aside from all my gushing about Moebius just a week or so ago, but it's an old ep so it doesn't count, right?)
JACK! DANIEL! Together again!
Wow, that was a fun ride. It just had everything -- a plot that genuinely kept me guessing all the way (and when was the last time either of the Stargates did that?), laugh-out-loud banter with the characters in all different combinations, incredible tension that -- as I just commented over at
with_apostrophe's journal -- was almost totally character-based, depending upon the relationships and personalities that have been built up for these people over the years, and the amount that we (as viewers) have invested in them, even more than the outside forces pushing them.
I'm wholly unspoiled for SG-1 this season, which meant that the big reveal -- Daniel as a Prior! -- was just OMG WOW ... and I had NO idea where it was going, whether Daniel would be good or evil or die or get stranded in the Ori galaxy ... I just had no clue at all. If I listed everything I liked about the episode, it would be the entire episode ... though my very favorite scenes were probably the first Jack/Daniel interrogation scene, and then the hair-ruffling at the end. But there was just so much awesome! Vala sitting on tied-up-Daniel's lap, kicking her legs; the little look between Woolsey and Jack before he delivers the bad news, acknowledging their shared history; the "oh shit, Daniel's loose!" moment; Daniel kidnapping Jack (and just the utterly matter-of-fact way that he did it, too -- as well as Jack's "I thought they fixed that..." line); Vala and Cam repairing the weapon; Teal'c being "better than a polygraph" (and, if I may be very shallow, Teal'c's arms and that vest ... oh God ... *dies*). Just ... everything.
Best SG-1 of the season, in my humble fannish opinion. And, honestly? I'd put that one right up there with the best of the series, even. I can't think of a single bad thing to say about it.

I said in a comment to Marf that Cam didn't do much in this ep, but I'd totally forgotten the assemblage of the weapon, so forgive me, Cam! So all the characters got good stuff to do.
You know, despite the 'previously on...' for some insane reason I was expecting the Prior to be Tomin, without the powers, masquerading as a Prior (after all that planet didn't know what a Prior should look like). So yes, shock and surprise and OH MY GOODNESS, DANIEL! all around.
Vala sitting on Daniel's lap. Oh! And the punch of that scene was totally unexpected.
That really was the best ep yet this season - and yes, better than '200'.
*I have so much love for your icon. I loved that moment*

It was just awesome! And it also highlighted, for me, how little we tend to see female characters interacting with each other in SF in a friendly way, like the guys do. I know that Tapping and Black had made it clear from the outset that they wanted their characters to be friends rather than rivals, and it's really cool to see the writers doing them that way -- even though there IS always going to be some inevitable friction, due to their approach to life being so different, but no more than there is between your average member on an SG team (leaving aside the blatant examples *grin*).
And I also love the way that Vala is more physically open with her teammates than the others tend to be -- kind of like Ronon is on SGA, though she's about an order of magnitude beyond him, of course. I still haven't seen any of the early Vala eps except for the one where she steals Prometheus, so while I can kind of vaguely fill in her character development from there to here, I really need to SEE it. This episode, and the sporadic ones I've seen lately, have finally given me the impetus to go out and start buying seasons. It's time for an SG-1 marathon, darn it!

Yeah, aprts of season 9 aren't thrilling - same for the beginnning of Season 10, but there are still good episodes. Usually the ones WITHOUT the Ori...

Oh, I skimmed over this part of your answer before, but yes! Me too! As soon as they started talking about the kinder, gentler Prior, I immediately jumped to the conclusion that Tomin had struck off on his own and started preaching his own, much more positive version of Origin. Perhaps we were meant to. And then right before he started talking, when they weren't showing his face, it hit me: "Oh, SHIT! Daniel!"
It's moments like that which remind me why I really need to start trying harder to avoid spoilers for SGA, because I love those OMIGOSH OHSHITOHSHIT moments, and you just don't really get them (or, at least, rarely get them) when you know too much about the episodes ahead of time. There are several plot twists in the SGA episodes this season that I wish I hadn't known about, and my two favorite episodes from the 2nd half of the season (Echoes and Tao) were the two that I knew absolutely nothing about ahead of time. So now I'm resolved to try harder to avoid spoilers next season. Being me, and having zero willpower, I'm sure I'll just click on all the spoiler links all over again, though.

Yeah, I love not having spoilers. Sadly, I know a *little* bit about next week's SGA - by accident. Again, I'm still in the 'I want to be forewarned about cast changes, but don't tell me about plot please' camp.
I know precisely nothing about the rest of SG-1 season 10, and hope it will stay that way.

But yeah, those two? No love, they hate each other, it's so obvious. LOL!!! And RDA went back to actually performing, not just standing there with his best Teal'c impression.
The rest of the ep? Will let you know, if I can get past the whole Alvin thing... *splorts*

*snorfl* Yeah, we noticed that too! My husband kept saying "What the hell's wrong with his voice?" every time he'd be on camera for more than a few seconds. And I'd insist that it wasn't just Jack, that everyone was in a slightly higher register and it's just more noticeable with Jack because he does that David Hewelett-ish thing where he raises the timbre of his voice when he's frustrated.
All-around awesome episode, I thought.

I think my version must have been from another original source 'cause it's fine - at least I didn't notice Daniel being Simon, Jack being Alvin, and Teal'c being Theodore!!

Favourite line is when Carter wants to know hoe Daniel cloaked the Odyssey, but he doesn't rememeber and Jack tells her that magicians don't share their secrets (or something like that). Frustrating, or what, for Sam!! Of course, I have a story idea that I started writing with SGA and SG1, but had to put on hold when Daniel went missing! It was set after Tao, and I was just hoping that Daniel returned around that time!!! And he did!! So...now I gotta get that Rodney and Daniel sharing about the whole telekinesis and such like conversation out of my mind and onto paper...!
Wonderful ep - so much to think about...might even have to watch it again!

You know, I kept thinking about "Tao" as I was watching this (as well as the episode where Daniel originally got Merlin-ified), but what I hadn't thought about until now is that, due to the airing of the episodes being staggered, Tao would actually take place *after* this one in continuity (assuming there's more or less a 1-to-1 correspondence between the continuities of the two shows, which *is* a big if, I guess). Either after, or more or less at the same time. And that does lend itself to all sorts of tag potential ... hmm.

In case you hadn't guessed, Daniel is my favorite character. (One glance at my SG-1 fan fiction is a good clue to that.)
As an aside, noting the next post and your response, I'll tell you here that I think your story, Comrade in Arms, is great. One of the things I've admired about your writing is the way you capture Ronon's internal monologue. I find it intimidating to take the POVs of the offworld characters in my fanfiction. It took a long time before I was willing to risk Teal'c's voice, for example. With Ronon, you do a superb job.

I don't know who my favorite SG-1 character is, because they're all so loveable. Kind of like I'll be absolutely sure that Rodney's my favorite on SGA, and then John or Ronon or Zelenka goes and does something adorable and I'll have a squee-fit. I used to be a huge Daniel fangirl, but I'd sort of gravitated to Vala and Teal'c lately ... until THIS episode came along and I rediscovered why I'd fallen for Daniel way back when. My God, the man is so amazing -- character and actor both. (Although this week's episode has bounced me right back to Vala. It's really unusual for me to love a female character as much as I adore her -- I don't know if it's just that I'm shallow and want my guy eye-candy, or that the women aren't written as the *type* of character that I like, but Vala is certainly pushing my happy buttons.)
But Daniel, and Michael Shanks, will always have a special place in my heart.
"Comrades in Arms"
Re: "Comrades in Arms"
Comments are turned off because of the generally unpleasant tone of a lot of SGA discussion lately ... I don't mind what people say in their journals but I do mind them coming into mine and arguing about it, so I figured that for my own sanity's sake, I'd just start disabling comments on my SGA-related posts until things calm down a bit. But thank you for letting me know that you liked the story!
