SGA Rodney vid: Dare You to Move
Title: Dare You to Move
Artist: Switchfoot
Genre: Character study, angst, episode-related
Spoilers: Trinity, McKay & Mrs. Miller
File type: WMV or Mp4, zipped
Summary: A Rodney-centric video about getting up and moving forward after making a mistake. Sometimes you have to risk it all to gain it all.
This is my first video edited in iMovie. While it's infinitely preferable to trying to do it in my old program (which was ten years old and feeling every minute of it), one thing that still drives me nuts about iMovie is that there's only one video editing track. In Premiere, I used to jump around a lot while I was editing a vid, using different tracks to keep my clips separate. Since iMovie only gives you one track, you can get everything all synced up, and then swap or resize a clip earlier in the timeline and knock the entire rest of your video out of sync. AAARGH...
Anyway, hopefully using iMovie will help fix some of the past problems with my vids, like the jerkiness that people mentioned. Let me know if you have any technical problems and I'll try to fix them.

Is there anything you don't do? You write fantastically, you do Photoshopping (I'm using that as a generic verb), you DRAW (and I won't begin to tell you how that makes me jealous) and you vid (again). What's next? Song-writing? A souzaphone symphony in four movements detailing the relationship between our favourite four mis-adventurers? Do you also make a mean souffle? When do you sleep?
*Grins at you*
A great bunch of clips you got there. I was entranced by the gorgeous ones of Atlantis at the beginning - which eps are they from?
This may sound bizzare - but what I got from this vid was a fresh realisation of just how good our actors can be. You really did pick some fantastic moments there- and not just for David...
Quick question - were the clips supposed to be running at a slightly higher speed than normal - or is that a tech prob? (I watched the large wmv, using the latest Windows Media Player and the ten million extra codecs (codeci?) I picked up this week)

That's from "Return part 2". They're the only clips in the vid that aren't from one of the two episodes I was profiling, but it was just such an absolutely lovely pan shot of the city that I really wanted to use it.
And thank you for the comments. I actually know just what you mean about appreciating the actors -- actually, one reason why I like songvids (both watching and making them) is because seeing the video without the voices helps drive home how *good* the actors are at expressing things non-verbally. They really do have a wonderful cast on this show.

Er ... it's not intentional. I don't get it on my playback, either. Does the audio go faster than normal also?

Also, I love that there's some nice clips of grinning!rodney - we don't see enough of that grin, and screencaps so often miss it. :)
lurve it. :)

He's got such a gorgeous smile. It's a shame that we don't get to see it more often! :)

*nabs the bigger WMV version of this vid*
& well - i just gotta say one thing. :) it was awesome as all get-out! loved all the clips. & of course i luv the song. switchfoot kicks butt...almost like no other. & wat can i say? ;) i love the mer (as in the meredith - the rod - the mckayster - et. al.) here too. ;) *grin* it was all just so tear-jerky & emotionally moving. So - in short order - this was another totally terrific vid! Keep up the great work! :)

And I love this one of yours! Love the way you interlaced scenes from Trinity and McKay & Mrs Miller - and also being somewhat fixated on sibling bonding (as you know), I love the way you juxtapose Rodney's interaction with Sheppard and Jeanie (and especially when you use the scene with them both looking at his video message towards the end of the vid).
Nice work! I likes it lots!
BTW - I downloaded both a quicktime and a WMV version to compare and the quicktime definitely plays smoother. I'll admit that I'm now wondering what my vids look like when played with video players other than the Windows one.

Yay! You *got* that! Considering that I see Sheppard and McKay as I do, one of the things that I wanted to do with this vid was contrast Rodney's relationships with Jeanie and Sheppard. I almost felt like the *writers* were actually doing that in M&MM anyway.

This is one of the things that bugs me about making vids. With fanfic, it's pretty much a sure bet (unless you use some kind of *really* weird formatting) that the reader is going to see the story the same way you see it (i.e. no horrible technical glitches). With vidding ... absolutely no such guarantee. For example, it took me a LONG time to realize that the Mac WMV player always plays vids at a certain size, regardless of what size they were made. Imagine my surprise when one day I tried opening one of the downloaded WMVs that I'd watched all the time in VLC and found it was twice as big as I'd thought it was! On my computer, everything plays a lot smoother in the Quicktime player or VLC than in the (craptastic) Mac version of Windows Media Player -- but until I tried it, I didn't *know* that; I just assumed that a lot of vids were kind of choppy.
Anyway, it's good to know how they compare; thanks for the info! Some people seem to have trouble with my WMVs, but for others, they work great (apparently...). The ones that I make out of iMovie are less problematic than the Premiere ones, but some of the problems are just due to codecs and there is only one WMV codec for the Mac (that I know of), so I'm pretty much stuck with it.
Oh, and we just got done watching "Something Wicked" and you're pretty much right about that episode melting me into a soppy puddle of fan-goo. It doesn't help that one of the things that really makes me all soft and melty is brave little-kid siblings protecting each other (which, incidentally, means I've been fighting an ongoing battle with myself not to write kidfic for SGA. Nooo! I! Will! Be! Strong!). And Dean really flips out when people hurt kids, doesn't he? I mean, in general, not just when it pertains to Sam.

I've been playing with some other vid ideas ... I haven't really had time to sit down and make a whole one, though.
