Procrastinating

Fanfic meme from [livejournal.com profile] sgatazmy...

1. Does your immediate family know you write fanfiction? (i.e. kids, spouse -- or parents if you still live at home)

No. Well, at least I don't think so. It's possible that my husband is a lot sharper than I give him credit for; there's obviously no way to ask him without, well, giving away the game. ;) But generally, it's something that I'm quite embarrassed to admit to him, leading to really silly things like actively trying to hide it ... minimizing the text file when he's in the room, for example -- and it's SOO frustrating to be right in the middle of a scene and then have him walk in and stand there talking to me, and in my head I'm all, "Yes, that's nice, now go away so I can finish writing this paragraph!"

2. Does your extended family know you write fanfiction?

My sister definitely does. She's into many of the same fandoms as I am, and we discuss it and recommend fics to each other. The rest of my family ... no. I think my mom might actually enjoy fanfic if she encountered it, but I can't imagine how to explain it to her.

3. Do you have people in RL that help you with your stories?

My sister, sometimes. She helps me brainstorm on plot points or suggests things when I'm stuck -- like helping me come up with a few different ideas of low-tech traps for Sheppard to use on the Wraith in "Running on Empty". I also have RL friends that I brainstorm original fic with (but they don't know I write fanfic).

4. Do you write for more than one fandom or stick to one?

I don't seem to write for more than one at a time, generally, but I've written in a number of different ones over the years.

5. Do you write "original" fiction as well? (i.e. non-fanfiction)

Yes.

It took a long time for my nonfanfic or exfanfic writing friends to convince me that writing fanfic wasn't something to be ashamed of. I went ten years refusing to write it despite a plethora of ideas all because of that. Now they can't get me to shut up about my latest stories. I think they wish they had never convinced me to start, lol!

Intersting that you can hide it from your husband with as much writing as you do! LOL.

there are many who don't understand it that I talk to, but no one who flat out discourages it. Me? I'm glad you write fanfic! Although, I'd love to read some original novels of yours as well. :)

I find it astonishing that your immediate family is unaware that you write fanfic. Not that any of us has "I write SGA" tattooed on our foreheads, but most of your stories are so freakin' long that you must spend every waking non-working moment at the computer banging away. I imagine it's pretty stressful that you are sort of "closeted."

That said, thank God for your sister! You have someone who understands and who you can talk to.

Thank God that you write at all, because your stuff is such a rockin' trip!
