Holy moly, Amazon.

I ordered some books from Amazon on Tuesday, and got the super-saver shipping, as always.

They arrived TODAY.

That is without a doubt an unprecedented Amazon speed record in all the years I've been ordering from them. GOOD WORK, AMAZON, KEEP IT UP.

I did get a bit lucky with this order, because I'd had another book on order that had been delayed a few weeks beyond the expected shipping date, and I think they bundled the two orders together and sent them via UPS 2nd-day air to make up for the delay. But still! 3 days! To Alaska! This never happens. Mailing a package to Anchorage usually takes about that long, and it's in the same state!

... of course, since the books I'd ordered were research materials for the novel I'm putting off revising, I guess I just ran out of excuses. *g*

I'm similarly impressed with Amazon UK. I order free super saver delivery from England to New Zealand, and my parcels always arrive excatly 5 days later! From England! Whenever I order from US Amazon it always takes 6 weeks and costs an arm and a leg.

but I order from another company and their standard arrives in three to five days.

I've always been fairly satisfied with Amazon as a customer, one reason being that they don't treat us (Alaska) any different from the continental U.S. in their shipping prices. (It's all too common for a business to offer free shipping to anywhere but Alaska, or extra shipping surcharges for Alaska/Hawai'i.) But even so, it usually takes forever for packages to get here. I must say it's nice to get a pleasant surprise for a change!

I was amazed enough when I got the "your books have shipped" notice the very next day -- but I had no idea the books would get here before Monday or Tuesday at the earliest. It's always nice to be pleasantly surprised!

I admit that I'm a bit spoiled living in the New York metropolitan area--I usually get amazon orders same week, unless they're holding it for one of the items. The downside is if the package doesn't manage to get delivered, I have to go pick it up at the ass end of Newark airport (I've done this).

*nods* It does make a huge difference where you live! I'm used to things taking forever to get here, so it's always a pleasant surprise when they arrive more quickly.
