Phew
Wow, that was a long-overdue chore ... after a rather panicky half-hour or so of not being able to get my computer to boot up yesterday, I cleaned up and backed up the hard drive. What a mess: files stashed in every nook and cranny, redundant folders, tons of half-finished posts I never posted and notes for projects I've long since forgotten about. My downloaded SGA vids alone -- most of which I'd never watched more than once -- were more than a DVD's worth, stashed in a million places all over my hard drive. No wonder I keep running out of space.
Well! Folders are all clean, everything is backed up on DVD and on my external hard drive, and if I do suffer a catastrophic system crash, the worst consequence is that I'll have to reconstruct my folder tree by copying things off DVDs.
The depressing thing is, I really haven't gotten much else done this weekend. Cleaning my computer is not supposed to take as long as cleaning my HOUSE. (Which, incidentally, is next on the agenda. One reason I haven't been doing much art is because my light table is buried under a ton of crap, and my desk is in no better shape. I feel so happy and creative with my tidy computer; now I need a tidy workspace to go with it ...)
I also ran across a fic I'd meant to rec ...

pocky_slash - this is a really cute document-fic featuring the Torchwood season two cast, in which a honeymooning Gwen exchanges postcards and emails with her typically chaotic co-workers. Canon pairings.

Makes me wonder if the moon is in Aquarius, or something. I haven't updated Windows in far too long, because the last time I did, it did something strange to the computer, had to do a restore. So, I've just spent two evenings copying everything to my external hard drive. (Moving picture files: 8+ hours. I went to bed before it finished last night. Moving fanfic files: 1 hr 40 mins. All other folders -- school, personal, etc -- a few minutes each.)
Now we'll see what happens. And I promise in the future to backup more regularly. (Yeah, I said that last time, too. *g*)

Dependent isn't even a strong enough word. I never wrote before I had a laptop; all my stories and work-related information is in my laptop. ALL of my digital pics (literally thousands) are on my HD. I've considered paying for online backup, but if technology goes to hell, that won't help, either. But I don't know another solution.
