Calling all '80s children ... :D

Okay, this is driving me crazy. We were talking about old TV shows with my in-laws tonight, and my husband was waxing nostalgic about what was apparently his favorite show when he was a little kid in the early '80s ... and none of us can figure out what show he's talking about. (He doesn't remember the name or who the actors were.) Google isn't helping either. He says that what he remembers is that it was sort of vaguely like MacGyver ("... but cooler") with a crime-fighting hero who had a headquarters in a warehouse with lots of high-tech computer equipment, and an airplane that he'd built, and other gadgets. Basically the hero was sort of a gadget-building MacGyver type. He says it's live-action, not a cartoon, and he thinks he was about 6 or 7 (which would put it in the general vicinity of 1983-84 -- but the dates could be off by as much as a few years).

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

ETA: After a lot more googling than it was probably worth XD ... we think we've found a very likely candidate: Probe. It's a little later than he remembered, but it's tough to remember exactly how old you were when various events in your childhood happened. I suppose we'll know for sure after the download finishes ... :>

In other fannish news, I got my art turned in for [community profile] sgareversebang and *hangs head* went ahead and signed up as an author too. I need something to give me a bit of a kick in the pants as far as writing is concerned -- I did write something for [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon, but it's been kind of like pulling teeth trying to squeeze words out of my head lately. Author signups close tomorrow and the art will be available for claiming around June 5th or so.

The Wizard starring David Rappaport? I think it was more 85/86-ish.

I remember The Wizard! My mom liked that show. I vaguely remember enjoying it ... I ought to see if I can get my hands on a few episodes.

No, we think we might have found it (after way too much googling) -- Probe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probe_(1988_TV_series)) sounds like a likely option (which, yeah, did air a little later than he thought). We'll know for sure after the download finishes ...

Holy moley, I never even heard of that one! (Ah ... the 80s ...) I don't think that's it -- I think we found it, see ETA above -- but thanks for looking!

I'm not sure -- we've got another good candidate that I'm downloading right now -- but wow, this is SO hilariously '80s!

Oh, I saw an episode of this once, missed the opening titles, loved it, and have been wishing I knew what it was so I could try to find more of it! And now I know! Hurrah!

Even if it's not the show your husband saw as a kid, it's still pretty awesome. Or at least the second episode is. :P

Heh, my sister had a crush on Parker Stevenson when he was on Baywatch several years later. I should have asked her, had I only known! She probably remembers it.

It looks like a cool show. It's co-created by Isaac Asimov! The publicity stills make me giggle (the 80s hair, omg!) but I'm looking forward to watching it.

Heh, reading the first paragraph I was going to guess Probe. Even if it isn't, it was a pretty awesome show, shame it didn't run longer.

I'm actually looking forward to watching it! Isaac Asimov was involved in creating it! How can it not be cool?

\o/ I am not alone!

Although I'm still working on mine, what was the process for turning in your art? I might still be half-asleep, but I can't seem to find it.

N/M I found it. Helps if you log in.

Sorry! I've been away from the computer most of the day. Glad you found it! :D

That icon is totally me today XD I should have my computer privileges revoked for how many tries it took me to fill out a simple form. That poor mod.

And Probe looks interesting! If I can ever find it, I might give it a watch sometime.

It looks interesting! We're pretty sure that's what it was, so we're downloading a few episodes to watch the next time we feel in the mood for TV. (Well, there only *are* a few, I suppose.)

Q.E.D.?

[identity profile] blacklabs2.livejournal.com 2010-05-31 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't Q.E.D.? I think the main character invented all kinds of gadgets in that one but it was so long ago, my memory is foggy.

*googles* I don't think so, because he remembered computers and airplanes, and it looks like this one is set in a sort of steampunk-ish Victorian England. But I'll have to see if I can find some clips; I've never heard of it, and it sounds entertaining!

[identity profile] linziday.livejournal.com 2010-05-31 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I was actually going to guess Probe before I read your ETA! Probe was an awesome show that I caught several years back when they ran it on the Sci Fi channel. I don't remember the airplane, but the rest of it fits. I still have some eps on VHS (my god, VHS). I'll have to go see if there's a plane.....

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2010-05-31 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It's fun! We watched the pilot episode last night; it's SO '80s, but in a fun cheesy kind of way. (Yeah, there doesn't seem to be an airplane. Though maybe there's one in a later episode. It's definitely the show, though.)

Wow, yeah, VHS! I think I still have a box of old VHS tapes around here from the '90s with episodes of shows like MacGyver and Sentinel on them. We used to think it was so great when it was all we had. *g*
