sholio: sun on winter trees (Sheppard moody)
Sholio ([personal profile] sholio) wrote2010-01-29 10:09 pm

Another question for all you smart people ...

The car that Sheppard was driving in Vegas ... does anyone know what kind of car it was?

Also, if you were going to give a modern-day spy character a cool, sleek, fast car, what kind of car would you give them?

(These questions both relate to a fic I'm writing. I just don't know anything about cars ... if I said "She's driving a Camaro", for example, I know what the car looks like in Google Image Search but I have no idea what connotations a car-savvy person would bring to that kind of car.)

This transcript (http://www.stargate-sg1-solutions.com/wiki/SGA_5.19_%22Vegas%22_Transcript) has it down as an old Camaro. It might be - it looks similar to this one (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/chevrolet/1968-2002-chevrolet-camaro-history-ar1399/picture54282.html) or this one (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/chevrolet/1968-2002-chevrolet-camaro-history-ar1399/picture54285.html). But I'm not really a car person, so I can't say for sure! Sorry I'm not more help than that. The internet seems bone-dry on the subject of that car, and none of the screenshots I found show the logo on the grill up close.

As for what cars spies drive... In Burn Notice, Michael Weston drives a Charger. :)

I was thinking maybe it was a Camaro, but mostly that's because I only know the names a few kinds of classic cars. *g*

Hmm ... Charger, you say? *googles*

[identity profile] dreamingoctober.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
Also, not really a "spy" car, per se, but Dean in Supernatural drives a '67 Chevrolet Impala.

My husband is in love with the Mazda RX8 (http://www.vivagoal.com/images/wallpapers/Mazda-RX8.jpg) - I think it would make a cool spy car. Especially in red. ^_^

I heard on a commentary track that the Charger has terrible visibility and drives like an oversized boat (which they didn't realize until after it was too late to change cars), so probably not the best choice for your story.

Ha! Thank you for the heads-up! *strikes that one off the list XD*

Here is a page of screen caps. (http://www.stargatearchive.com/gallery/?p=screen-caps/atlantis/season5/519/index) There are a few of the car.

Wow, even seeing it up close doesn't really help. *g* Google Image Search (my best friend!) turns up a Camaro emblem that looks a lot like the one on the car, but I can't find any Camaros with a grill that looks like that.

[identity profile] parisindy.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
i am pretty sure its a chevy camaro
the only thing thats throwing my off is the logo on the grill
isn't the usual chevy logo

http://www.cartrans.co.uk/Graphics/gallery/Fullsize/camero-blue.jpg

but it looks really similar to other camaro's

Ah!

*googles around a bit*

Does this look about right? 1978 Camaro (http://chiefbodyandfender.com/gallery_78camaro.html). I can't find anything that looks *exactly* the same, but the mid-1970s Camaros seem to have that emblem on the grill.

[identity profile] parisindy.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
well its different from sheps but the emblem is right like you said

so i think we are safe to say its a chevy camaro

Thank you for the help! :)

Ironically, a Camaro was what I'd stuck in as a placeholder for Teyla's car -- she's the spy in question -- so, since Sheppard's got a Camaro, now I need to pick out a new car for her ...

[identity profile] parisindy.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm addicted to top gear ...
hehe its the only reason i had any clue at all lol

hmm teyla hehe she seems sophisticated...porsche maybe
hehe ronon.. totally a land rover!!! hehe

[identity profile] snarkydame.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
Does it need to be an American car? I can think of several very very sleek, fast cars I've seen on Top Gear . . . very European though.
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm ... I guess it would depend on how unusual or distinctive the car is? Like, say, a Lamborghini would be a bit much, I think. *g* But something less ostentatious and more practical ought to work. What did you have in mind?

[identity profile] snarkydame.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of the Aston Martins are very nice -- classy, very James Bond. And a couple of the Masaratis are gorgeous, very sleek and speedy. And while they'd certainly turn heads, neither of them are outlandish looking.
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! I'd thought about an Aston Martin but wondered if maybe it was a little *too* Bond. Though the pictures look awfully nice ...

[identity profile] snarkydame.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
It is a very pretty car. *g

And I think it's been long enough since the movie that a reader wouldn't immediately go "Bond!" especially if it's not silver, and if Teyla doesn't act like Bond (which I can't really picture anyway. She's much cooler.). Then again, there are still plenty of people (especially in this country) who only recognize the Aston Martin as "the Bond car," so I see your point.

Oh wow! Imagine seeing that thing coming down the road towards you -- you'd start looking around for supervillains in helicopters!

Nods. Or the film crew.

[identity profile] coolbreeze1.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
How about a Mustang? The newer models are pretty sleek (though I like the look of the older models myself).
ext_1981: (Default)

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking Mustang or possibly a Corvette right now.

[identity profile] d_odyssey.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I know you have the answer now, but definitely a Camaro, late 70's edition. I had a used white 76 Rally Sport with 3 speed 250 engine that looked the same. I loved that car.

Chevy has an all new Camaro styled in a throwback look paying homage to the orginal Camaros of the late 60s. Very sharp car - I want one. Really, really badly want one. I'm partial to Camaros, but other sporty models are the Ford Mustang or Dodge Challenger. The old, original muscle cars would be the originals to those mentioned here as well as a Pontiac GTO (affectionately known as the goat), Oldsmobile 442, Plymouth Barracuda, Chevy Chevelle or the one and only Corvette, any year. I'm going with the more affordable American cars, rather than exotic or expensive imports like a Lamborghini or Maserati. I really love the new Camaro.

*nods* I think I'm leaning more towards a cheaper American car for the personality and finances that I've given her in the AU. Right now I'm thinking probably a Mustang or a Corvette would work.
