All the cool kids are doing it. :D
A few recs for Yuletide fics that I've read thus far! Also proof that I am reading in no particular order.
Rules for Being a Girl in a Zombie Apocalypse (Zombieland, mostly gen with various pairings, non-explicit) - Fantastic POV on Wichita and her own set of survival "rules". This is a little more realistic than the movie while not losing the movie's black humor; it's a spot-on look at their messed-up little family, and I loved it utterly.
Chicago (Zombieland, gen with background Wichita/Columbus) - More Zombieland, this time focused largely on Tallahassee and Little Rock. SQUEEEEE! If I'd seen the movie before I turned in my requests, that's one of the things I would have asked for, so this couldn't be more awesome if it had been written just for me! Their weird-but-cute father/daughter vibe is in full swing here, and the whole group of them are just such an odd and sweet little family that it makes me "awwww".
every new beginning (comes from some other beginning's end) (Dragonriders of Pern, mostly gen with some Lytol/OFC, non-explicit) - OMG, Lytol fic. LYTOL FIC. *_* I haven't been fannish about Pern in decades, but I had to make an exception for this story because Lytol/L'tol has always been my favorite character (okay, other than Menolly) in the whole series - I've always had a huge soft spot for the lost and the broken. *g* I loved him for surviving something that kills most people and building a new life, and I loved how he was so fundamentally broken and such a general asshole and yet managed to be a decent and honorable guy in spite of it. This story breaks my heart for him all over again; it's painful and bleak as his life is, but it's also a perfect Pernese slice-of-life for those who aren't lucky enough to be the heroes of their own books.
The Visitor (Forever Knight, gen) - A conversation between Natalie and Janette. I adore Nat, and these two had so little interaction in canon. The voices are perfect and I love that the darker side of Janette's character is not whitewashed - she's petty, dangerous and likes to play head games, but she also genuinely cares about Nick, she's very smart and she isn't as wantonly cruel as most of the other vampires, and that comes through very clearly here.
El Desdichado (Galactic Milieu, Marc/Aiken, non-explicit) - I didn't know I wanted fic for these books, let alone with this pairing, until I read this! It's gorgeous and poetic, spanning galaxies and millennia in a few short paragraphs (like the books themselves).
The Yiddish Policeman's Chapbook (The Yiddish Policeman's Union, gen) - *squeaks, flails* This series of snippets from Landsman and Berko's other cases is a perfect pastiche of the book's terse, sardonic voice, and the bits of Alaskan history and folklore are just awesome. The author is either Alaskan or they really did their homework.
Ode to Enlightenment (Red Dwarf, gen) - A nifty friendship fic.
Upgrade (Red Dwarf, gen) - I could totally imagine this as an actual episode. The author has absolutely nailed the show's unique humor and screwiness.
Simmering (Jean Auel's Earth's Children, explicit) - This is a parody, but such a perfect pastiche of the books that it skirts the edge of almost-plausibly-canonical. Which is kind of scary, but very funny.
Fearful Symmetry (Back to the Future, gen-ish) - Takes the cracktastic time travel of the movies and makes it cool and science-fictiony. I kinda wish that the time travel theory in the story had been pushed farther than it was - I was expecting more of a twist at the end - but it's still a very fun story with a neat Marty & Doc dynamic.
A Duplicity of Pirates (Princess Bride, gen) - Post-book fic, absolutely delightful; the friendships, the humor, the little glimpses at where their lives have all gone in the intervening years. Mainly focused on Inigo and Westley, with a little bit of everyone.
Also, edited to add:
