There's an SGA gen hurt/comfort holiday commentfic thing going an [livejournal.com profile] sgahcchallenges, in case gen h/c is your crack of choice (as it is most definitely mine). *g*

Hey, Dresden Files people on my flist ... did anyone read the Harry story in Many Bloody Returns? I will shamefacedly admit that I bought the whole anthology just for that one story ... but I think it was worth it! Harry and Molly give Thomas a birthday present. This story was TOTAL FANFIC, and I mean that in a good way. *g* Especially considering what the present actually turned out to be. (Harry wanted to give him toy robots because he wished he'd had a brother to play toy robots with him in the orphanage! d'awwwww! Are we entirely sure Jim Butcher isn't actually a 17-year-old girl? *g*)

Also, the whole LARPing vampire thing is almost as much fun as werewolves playing RPGs. I kinda love how this series approaches nerd subculture, because Butcher is quite evidently a giant nerd himself, and even in those cases when fun is clearly being poked at it (like the LARPers) it's a gentle insiderly kind of fun.

I think there was a mention on Butcher's website that he wants to collect all the shorts into an anthology. Which would be awesome! :D But I still can't help buying them as they come out. (And hey, I discover new authors that way, too!)

[identity profile] crashbarrier.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
SQUEEE!...

although I do have them anyway:D...

[identity profile] spark-force.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't it adorable? XD I love all of the short stories, but that was definitely one of my favorites.

It was really the cutest thing ever, and I think it's one of my favorites now, too! :D I really adore getting these little glimpses into the Dresden Files world between the books, and I can't think of another author who does that, at least not quite so much of that -- there are some who have a short story here or there, but Butcher's got a lot of them!

I'm actually kind of boggled at how much he writes. Between Dresden Files and Codex Alera, he must be doing at least two books a year, plus the short stories too! Where does he find time for it all ...?

[identity profile] spark-force.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, right? The guy is crazy productive!

I'm kind of hoping, now that Codex Alera is over, that he'll be able to do two Dresden books a year-- but that's probably just wishful thinking. Maybe we'll get a new series, though? *crosses fingers*

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* Codex Alera was really not my thing at all, but I'm very curious to find out what he'll do next. Though I wouldn't blame the guy for taking a break at this point!

[identity profile] spark-force.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually rather enjoyed it-- not as much as the Dresden Files, of course, but still enough to buy it in hardback. (Of course, considering how much hardbacks cost these days, and my current jobless state, it's probably a *good* thing it's finished!)

[identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Where does he find time for it all ...?"

I really wish, and hope, someone asks him one day. I have nothing but time to write, but it took me almost a year just to finish my recent original story, and will probably take me another year or two to complete all the editing I want to do.

Then again, I am easily distracted, and on occasion, discouraged.

[identity profile] crashbarrier.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I am taking a guess at either a pocket universe set aside for writing in.. just awesome typing fu, and or he dictates and its typed up by an army of highly trained spidermonkeys...

The only other author I have seen who was as equally prolific in the genre was Terry Pratchett, who was literally churning out at least 2 books a year min at the height of his writing.

Harry and Molly give Thomas a birthday present.

Well, damn. Now, of course, I have to buy it. *grumbles*

It's really every bit as adorable as you can imagine from that description, too. :D

I saw mention on Butcher's website that he wants to collect his Dresden Files short stories into an anthology, though, so you might want to wait and see if that happens.

[identity profile] gnine.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, I loved that story, it was sooo cute! Well, okay...I admit, I pretty much adore ANYTHING that involves Harry and Thomas together, but b-day presents and toy robots and yeeaaah, sooo sweet!

Want the next book now!! *whimpers*

[identity profile] friendshipper.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
*whimpers with you*

Harry and Thomas was sort of a slow burn for me -- I didn't really like Thomas when he first showed up, and kinda eyerolled at the brother thing, but they have been so cute and adorable and loyal ever since that it was impossible not to be completely sucked into their orbit. (And then the last book happened, NOOOOOOOO. *chews fingernails* Is it April yet?)

[identity profile] gnine.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
(And then the last book happened, NOOOOOOOO. *chews fingernails* Is it April yet?)

I KNOW! Meeeep! I'm so worried, and then with the title of the next book and just...*whimpers*...it has to work out okay, it just HAS TO!

[identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I hope he does do an anthology.

There's a comic book, too. Though you probably already know that. I saw it at Borders and was mightily tempted to get it. But I think at the time I didn't have enough money.

Is this a new one? I've got the one where he's fighting critters at the zoo (the exact plot eludes me now). The art was kind of so-so in that one, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't take a look at a new one.

Apparently there are going to be more Stargate comics. Considering what the last ones looked like, I'm kind of scared ... *g*

[identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. It was a while ago so I can't remember what I saw ehn I flipped through it. It may have been the one you described, though.

[identity profile] snarkydame.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
There's also the first part of comic adaptation of Stormfront. The art's about the same, but it's kind of cool to see what gets emphasized in a different format.

[identity profile] crashbarrier.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The Dabel Bros did "Welcome to the jungle" which is a stand alone and tehy have also done an adaption of "Storm Front". It is in two trade hardbacks. The art work is quite good.

[identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com 2009-12-05 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Welcome to the jungle, that's the one I saw!
naye: A cartoon of a woman with red hair and glasses in front of a progressive pride flag. (sanity?)

Ooooooh, yes! ♥ I got the book as a present, and I'd only wished for it because of Butcher's story. And it is SO ADORABLE and SO SWEET and also kind of tense and scary and then hysterical with the LARP gone horribly wrong and then TOY ROBOTS and they really are the cutest reunited brothers ever...! (Only four months to next Dresden book! \o/)

Your icon! Hee!

The story was just all I'd hoped for and MORE! It was total fanfic, it really was -- but he managed to keep it snarky and fun rather than sappy, so it was good fanfic! *g*

(And since the robots were destroyed, Thomas should give Harry some toy robots for his next birthday; I think that would utterly make his day and possibly his year, don't you? :D)

[identity profile] snarkydame.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
One of the perks of working in a bookstore -- I can read the best bits of anthologies while I'm on break! That one, I think, is my favorite of the Dresden shorts so far.
